  1. Thanks for your supportive replies. I will have a look at your suggestion DJ360. My mum died a year to the day before my sister. I had no problem with that as she had a very good innings and I would have hated her to have to bury her daughter. I just sat early this morning and felt like getting it off my chest. I'll never forgive him. It's not on my mind all the time but when I think of my sister I instantly well up with seething anger over his antics. It's that more than anything I need to be rid off. I accept death and illness however untimely and unfair is a fact of life. I'm quite a nice p
  2. My sister who was 4 years older than me passed away last August. She had a brain tumour and suffered terribly with anguish and worry and in the last few years paralysis. In short it was a horrible long slow death lasting the best part of 6 years. She was and always had been very religious. Polar opposite to me a total utter atheist. Her faith didn't seem to give her any comfort but that's her business. I was a bit of a rebel and left home more or less at 16 and during 99% of adult life we were not close at all. She had desperately wanted children but didn't and I did so I think her way of dea
  3. I was born and raised on Grimston Road, at the top end. Weathalls grocers were at the bottom. We knew them quite well as they lived nearby. My dad had a car which he needed for work. I guess there were only a dozen cars on the whole road. In those days you had to have a parking light and dad had a hurricane paraffin lamp with a pice of red cellophane on one half rather than flatten the car battery. The lamp had a short length of stout wire attached to the handle which used to tuck in the wheel of the car to stop it blowing over. I used to put this lamp in place most nights for my dad and he'd
  4. I worked in the design office at Raleigh as a school leaver in 1970. The office where I was based is still there together with quite a few others which are just behind the main head office building on Lenton Boulevard. They are split into small units as a business centre but 'my' office is practically unchanged. My boss was Alan Oakley who allegedly designed the Chopper which he didn't but that's another story. So 99% of Raleigh is gone but not all.
  5. I knew Tom Fletcher too. Nice man. I never could afford one of his decks. The problem is that abbreviations are rife on the Internet and if you're trying to take them on then you're wasting your time. I don't like things like 'IMHO' or SWMBO etc I would think they came about as text speech when inputting a large volume of text was diffuclt and the length of messages restricted. If the company name is Nottingham Analog then there isn't really a satisfactory abreiviation. It's not simply a matter of if its City or County. Nottingham is part of the name. I think you just have to grit your teeth
  6. Yes really great pictures. Thanks for posting. What a shame my mum is not still here to see them. I can see the attraction with ziggy. He is rather handsome. He's actually similar looking to my dad who she met just after the war. I wonder if it would be worth writing to any descendants of zingy but who knows what mud you might stir. Perhaps best to let it lie now.
  7. I believe that the demolished one is my old school namely Forest Field Grammer. It was the new building we moved to from the Stanley Road buildings in about 1968-9. I never warmed to it, in fact disliked it intensely and wasn't there long and left in early 1970. It may well have become some other named school later. Its ironic that the old building on Stanley Road remains to this day but the 'new' school is rubble.
  8. The police station is at the side of the fire station. If you look at the fire station front where the fire engines are parked then the left hand corner is the police station. It runs all the way down and backs onto the Guildhall Court building.
  9. I worked at Central 3 times in my career, all in all about 12 years. I loved it and without doubt the best station I was at. The last time was from 1990 to 97 when I retired. I will be at the ceremony tomorrow. I had my time there and got the tee shirt but I feel sorry for those who will never have the opportunity to be stationed there. I bet the new place won't have half the character of the old nick.
  10. I would love a copy of this photo. My mother has passed away since I wrote the posts in 2012. I still have an empty tin of quality street that ziggy gave my mum. I have sent you a message Desdemona.
  11. I lived in Radford but right on the boarder with Hyson Green depending where the boarder officially is. Is there an 'official' boarder? I was just of Radford Boulevard at the Gregory Boulevard end. I went to Berridge 1960-66 and many of my friends were from the Green on or near Birkin Avenue. Hyson Green was a very good shopping area. It was the next step before actually going into town. My mum used to get school stuff from Fords.
  12. I was born and raised in Radford and I do mean born as I was the second child my mum had me at home. I lived in Hucknall and Bulwell for a while when I married but moved back to Radford where I stayed 18 years until I retired. Sadly this working class area has changed and without wishing to offend anyone who still lives there it wasn't a place I wanted to stay. I still go there often as family are still there (a good reason to move away). Don't get me wrong, I love it but it's not the Radrord I was born in. I now live in the Trent Valley near Southwell. It's lovely and wouldn't change it but
  13. Totally agree. I've come across this same tactic in the coop but with beer. 3 for £4 or whatever with several different type and with one or two not included so you pay full price on the lot. Fine if that's all you're buying but it can slip past if you include it with a trolley full.
  14. I was driving past the front of the old Guildhall the other day when a deliveroo scooter came from North Sherwood Street on the pavement shot accross the road in front of me within a few feet, mounted the pavement opposite the Guildhall and went off out og sight. All the wrong way on one way road or on the pavement. People at the bus stop obviously unhappy and shouting at him o her. Total nutter.
  15. I married in 1974 as I had a job in London lined up so we married so we would be together and went to live at my parents as it didn't seem worth getting a place of our own as we would be going to London any day. The job fell through as the ira became active and the job relied on lockers on railway stations (it's a long story) so we ended up at my parents for about 6 months. It was a disaster as my mum was rather difficult and we had a really dreadful time. Found a flat in the end over a hairdressers in Radford and remained there for a couple of years.
  16. My lorry driver father in law was once asked by some American tourists for directions to sum-er-ca-teas (Somercotes)
  17. The other night I was watching Notts TV and they mentioned Wollaton. They pronounced it WOL AT ON not WOOL at on. I might be petty but it really peed me off that they hadn't said it correctly. But then my wife put a spanner in the works by saying maybe that is the way to say it but we (Radford gutter snipes) say it incorrectly. She's Barmy of course but why do we say it the way we do. Other locations in my present area have similar ways of pronouncing their names. Averham near Newark (Air ham) and Hallam (Hailam). Southwell often spoken as both South well and Suthell. I always use the South we
  18. Now sold. Could have sold them several times over.
  19. My father was an avid Notts County fan since he was 8 right up until his death. It was said the ref wouldn't start the match until dad was in his seat. When he retired from work he got signed memorabilia from the club. I don't follow football much but do listen to County match commentary on BBC radio Nottm when I can. Last night was a rare opportunity to watch them on the TV. I suppose you could say that Salford played out of their skins and made Notts look poor but you'd be wrong. Notts were simply terrible. Players showed no commitment standing around clueless seemingly unable to string 2 p
  20. I'm not worried about within a year or two, just an about date is fine. It came up in conversation yesterday. I was born on Grimston Road and my wife moved to Glentworth about 1959. I mentioned that when my parents moved into Grimston in about 1953 there were still the remnants of gas lighting points visible on the walls, although long disconnected. She didn't beleive they were that old. I remember the guy who lived next door to me, Mr Mayfield, telling me when he moved in Churchfield Lane was little more than a track with nothing but fields and farms along side right out to Aspley and beyond.
  21. These 3 roads of terraced houses run between Churchfield Lane through to Radford Bolevard. I beleive they were built around 1900-1910. Can anyone help dating them please. Thanks
  22. I've pm'd Col. Too many to list. If your really interested come and look through or pm me and I'll give you my mobile number and I can go through the boxes while your on the line.
  23. I used to have well over a thousand 78's but thinned the collection some years ago and I retained the best ones which I am offering here a total of 362. There are numerous dance bands and quite a lot of rock and roll including some rare items. Jerry lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Elvis, Cliff, Jackie Wilson plus some jazz. These aren't the normal eric camp on the organ or a Barritone singing hymns etc but some real excellent records. I paid as much as £12 for an individual disc. I would like £100 which I know seems a lot for 78's but represents a fraction of their cost to me and their worth if I
  24. I know this is an old post but I've just noticed it. There was a place on Hartley Road in the 1980's that made fibreglass canoes. It was in one of the old corner shops on the left going up towards Alfreton road. I bought one and took it on holiday to Dorset and very nearly drowned when I capsized and my attempt at an Eskimo roll failed miserably.
