  1. I get annoyed after queueing for ages and then being met with, 'Thank you for waitng'. What else do you do?
  2. I take the coal out of the bath and bathe every month!
  3. Probably mentioned before under this topic but you don't see the old wooden clothes horses these days which, with a sheet chucked over them, we used as a tent outdoors, or indoors if we didn't use the table as a frame.
  4. Sounds like a good pantomime routine to me. I must try it!
  5. My brother told me of a time in the fifties at Wm Crane Sec Boys when a sports master found a lad hitting bricks with a cricket bat. The master took the bat and laid the lad out with it. Whether it was a hook shot or a drive he never said.
  6. Cutains closed during the day due to a death in the family. These days they would be closed to keep the sun off the T.V.
  7. Don't worry. Membership is not compulsory.
  8. About 20.00 I think. My watch only goes up to 12.
  9. Being interested in aircraft, though not quite an anorak, I have always been excited by the sound of an Avro Vulcan at full power on take-off.
  10. It is a fan club aimed at preserving the humour of the Goons. It publishes a small magazine dealing with those who had connections with the shows and their production, and offering deals on CDs etc. The president is the Prince of Wales, whatever that may be worth.
  11. As a matter of interest I've just joined the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society ( HPLHS) based in the USA and have been a member of the Goon Show Preservation Society (GSPS) for sometime. Is anyone else a member of similar groups?
  12. I too remember him as Flash Harry in 'The Belles Of St Trinians', a role he carried through to 'Minder' and who remembers 'A Life Of Bliss' on the radio, with Psyche the dog, played by Percy Edwards. George Cole was another personality who was always a joy to see and hear. RIP.
  13. People asking for broken biscuits, or asking for extra bits of batter etc. in their fish and chips.
  14. The other day I nearly came out with an expression I haven't heard for ages. I didn't use it because it wouldn't have been understood. When someone is in a hurry or impatient, they are told, 'Take yer sweat'.
  15. Noel Street - Oh the chlorine! And Highfields on the edge of the uni' grounds - freezing!
  16. Much of what's been mentioned plus the feeling that there seem to be many hands in my pocket trying to find my wallet.
  17. Another thread connecting to the past broken. RIP.
  18. If I have a tombstone, who's going to write on it?
  19. The one great advantage Crane had over Players was that Crane had no sadistic dentists in the clinic!!!
  20. Home made cloth bags with a draw string for carrying gym kit to school and wooden pencil cases, now expensive things to by at 'By-Gone' sales.
  21. On the radio this morning it was announced that the education body of Finland consider the teaching of handwriting in schools to be no longer necessary since all such communication is done electronically these days via 'phones computers etc. A good idea?
  22. There was an interview with Ginger Rogers screened the other day in which it was said that at the time of her first film with Fred Astaire, Ginger was the bigger star of the two but he was billed first; an example of sexism. She also said that she did what he did during a dance routine but did it backwards and wearing high heels.
  23. #27 I think you must be right. As I understand it, there is no school where Crane once stood. Ah yes, we senior boys let a nearby school know who was boss; beat 'em at cricket, football, boxing. William Crane Senior Girls didn't know what had hit 'em!
  24. Perhaps the answer to the present crisis is to close the tunnel and revert to ferry crossings. More shipping of course but better controlled by onboard security patrols with time to search for any possible stowaway.
