  1. I've plenty of memories of the wonderful Victoria Station: waiting on the platforms to leave for holidays, going on school trips, train spotting, even used to buy a platform ticket and go have a cup of tea in the waiting room sometimes....... Must cumulate my memoirs on the stunning piece of Victorian architecture that once was.
  2. Hi there Nottsgirl, so pleased to welcome another female member - to boost our numbers against the glut of fellas posting (all helpful chaps I might add). Reads like you have an interesting history. I worked as a 'Saturday Girl' at Farrands on 'The Green' during the early 60's; such a colourful place back then, with its variety of shops was Hyson Green. I note that you left to work as a nanny in Canada, sounds like you have the wonderful gift of a pioneering spirit. Hope you continue posting.
  3. 'Dog and Partridge', now there looks an interesting pub, judging by the Characters that hang around its front doors; have often been tempted to go inside and discover what it is that makes the Pub so popular. It's been like that for years, a motley group of people hanging around outside. I suppose we should worry / be concerned if *'the show' should ever cease! * One of Nottingham's 'sought out' sights.
  4. What a surprise, a Winter Wonderland to greet me as I opened the curtains this morning; doesn't panic me: like to say that I merely adjust to Mother Nature. PS: Now where did I leave my Winter boots? They were in the garage last time I saw them.........
  5. And where have you been then Plantfit? - not that I'm checking up on you. All the best........
  6. Hi there James, you certainly are Welcome here; let's hope you continue Posting.
  7. Hi there Radfordred, at least you had the common courtesy to get back.
  8. Hi Systema, I note you're a Newbie; let's hope you'll be posting for some time.
  9. Hi Bimblebee, I'll check you out soon. Bye, bye.
  10. Hi Bimblebee, pleased to have come across you; have taken a look at your references, will try and find the time to read.......... Good luck with the writing.
  11. Bamber, not noticed you before - sorry - any relation to Gascoin?
  12. Remembering those vast, amazing Swingboats: I loved to visit my great grandma who lived in Radford Woodhouse because whilst my grandma 'did' - cooked and cleaned - for her parents, my sister, uncle and myself could escape on to the park on Radford Bridge Road, where a wonderful Swingboat resided; there weren't many Swingboats on the Nottingham City Parks. It was wonderful to work the Swingboat, one person standing at each end, making the vast swing go higher and higher - almost touching the sky!
  13. Thank you Stu, had many a go on the above when I was a kid - rocking up and down; Amesbury Circus Park. PS: I wonder what was the fate of the Parks equipment?: Rocking Horses, Slides, Ocean Waves, Swingboats, Roundabouts, Swings; were they just dismantled and forgotten? - except in our memories. I'd give my garden over to one of the magnificent Swingboats anytime. I bet even now all the kids from the neighbourhood would be queuing up to have a go! Oh and yes, I think I may have just enough room for the thrilling Ocean Wave, the things we'd get up to on it - decent of course!
  14. Good to see Joe Brown still going and looking good. The blonde, Cockney, chirpy chappy made some memorable records back in the 60's: 'That's What Love Will Do' and 'What A Crazy World' to name but a few...... Joe always looked as though he was having FUN when entertaining. It's amazing how well he's done, considering that at one time he'd been devastated at the loss of his wife Vicky - through breast cancer; he disappeared off the scene for a time. Vicky had been one of the original 'Vernons Girls'. PS: Thanks to Paulus for the captivating video.
  15. Haven't the faintest! But are they giant redcurrants dangling? Certainly a shock to the eye when first glimpsed.
  16. Sad that the Bowie video @ #23 has been blocked for copyright reasons - will try 'YouTube', even if it's a shorter version.
  17. All this 'ooh ahh' being created by Bowie's latest release; can't they see that it's Bowie in his mature years philosophising? I reach the wonderful age of 66 this March - born in the same year as Bowie - and I do the same, philosophise: 'looking at life on Earth'. Bowie fuses the past (memory) with the present and poses the question: "Where are we now? where are we now?" Bowie's release is beautiful and haunting: a poem set to music.
  18. I'm tempted to visit the old Co-operative store that was - Parliament Street - and take a look at what they've done to the place; I wonder if the Art Deco staircase exists? - and if it doesn't, then what happened to it?
  19. Remembering my Great Aunt Gert of Forest Fields: she was a marathon knitter and well into her 80's, in fact I think the knitting must have kept her going - as she lived by herself. Aunt Gert knitted a vast amount of men's jumpers and cardigans for my grandma. Every Saturday night, grandma and grandad would catch a bus in Aspley and visit Aunt Gert up in Forest Fields, take her a quarter of chocolates and perhaps a few skeins of wool to keep her going. PS: now there's a memory, with the mention of the word 'skeins'; many's the time I had to aid my mum - arms out, thumbs alert - when she
  20. To David Bowie, with Love An ARTIST, an Innovator
  21. Hi Stephen and Banjo, sounds like you two are a couple of expert knits. PS: Banjo, I used to get real carried away on my French bobbin and once made enough knitting to roll into circles, sew them together and make a rug. PPS: John Lewis sell rainbow wool if any of you fellas are thinking of taking up your pins again but if you want some reasonably priced try: 'Poundstretchers' - £3 (something) for a great, big ball.
  22. 'I told 'em Oldham!' Hi Paulus, at least you've got the idea. Yes, I remember saying the slogan with a firm, dictatorial accent - what we kids learnt from adverts eh? We could have sat an O' Level in TV Ads!
  23. Okay I stand corrected: the saying was probably used to advertise car batteries but I know that at the same time the advert was being shown on the TV, we kids at school were milking it to death in the playground - before any comedians on TV.
  24. 'I told 'em Oldham'; I remember this catchy little slogan: it was used to advertise tyres back in the late 50's. I recall a school bus trip at the time the slogan was popular, passing through Oldham and feeling disappointed with the place; it didn't match up to the magic of these 4 little words, especially as at the time the slogan was tripping off everyone's tongue.
  25. Hi Stephen @ #9, did your mum teach you always to knit into the back of each stitch after the casting on row, in order to create a perfect foundation for the knitting that was to follow? I also used to knit with one knitting needle. Anyone remember French knitting?: I used to make my own base to knit on by using an empty cotton reel and 4 nails; I'd drive either my mum or grandma crazy by continually asking for used cotton reels, then I'd drive either my dad or granddad crazy by asking them to knock the 4 nails into the cotton reel! It was all worth it, just to see the amazing rainbow w
