  1. Valdo Calocane........it turns out he has dual Portuguese/Guinea-Bissau nationality, and grew up in Haverfordwest.
  2. Next time you do that, take a few selfies and post them here.
  3. Prompted by 2CV's post, I've just read through this entire thread, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a reminder of what Nottstalgia used to be like in the good old days - with memories, information and anecdotes. It's a pity most of Dave Mills' photos have disappeared again. Even though he last logged in only a couple of months ago he obviously didn't look at this thread.
  4. She also had a local connection - sort of. She starred in Ken Russell's film of Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence.
  5. In the waiting room at the dentist’s this morning, at any time there were around 5-6 other people. During their waiting time, all of them were permanently looking at their phones. I deliberately didn’t look at mine - just to be different. I must've stood out like a weirdo.
  6. I see it that he stabbed the two students at 4am. Then he travelled/ran/walked to Mapperley Road and tried to get in a house but was refused. That would've been leading up to 5am. He then hijacked the van, killed the driver, and drove around. Just after 5am. Ended up in the city centre where police saw him; he panicked near Milton St and drove into the bus queue around 5.30am. I've now found this which explains things better. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-65906687
  7. In contrast to the current news in Nottingham, this was only a few miles down the road earlier today.
  8. This feed is constantly updated. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-nottinghamshire-65888114 The incident happened at several locations but all seem to be linked.
  9. Just south of the river there was a lot of rain and thunder and lightning for around an hour 5-6 pm.
  10. Yes, that's exactly what I do if I see numbers about to change in that way. Driving an extra time round the block to see the mileage hit a certain figure. Staring at a digital clock to wait for certain combinations of digits. Simple things; simple minds, etc.
  11. What fascinates me about radio these days is the number of stations dedicated to playing old records of a particular era. There seem to be dozens of them, concentrating on the 60s or 70s or 80s etc. There's obviously an increasing number of older people in the listening world who don't like current musical trends; and that means a growing market for radio stations which only look backwards to whatever is your own 'golden age' of music.
  12. I'd forgotten about Frozen Orange Juice. Quite liked that; not as boring as Where do you go to.
  13. He was indeed a one-hit wonder, and I never really liked 'Where do you go...'. , but the predecessor was the oddly named 'I am a Cathedral' which I think is one of the great lost gems of music.
  14. It seems that although Nadine Dorries drooled over Boris, the feeling wasn't mutual. So she's thrown her toys out of the pram as well.
  15. Yes, he was chiefly known as an actor.......and apparently a drinker and general hell-raiser, on a par with Oliver Reed.
  16. I have a similar attitude towards Richard Harris (mainly known as a singer for MacArthur Park). He couldn't sing in the traditional sense, but he made a couple of albums and I really like them.
  17. It's a question of whether the BBC can continue to pay for programming from individual areas. Having separate stations for every city is a nice idea, but it’s expensive; listeners may want it but aren’t particularly prepared to pay for it. Commercial Radio gave up the idea a long time ago; many people here will remember when Radio Trent first appeared in the mid-70s and was genuinely local, but by the early 2000s most commercial stations had merged to become one big national/regional entity. And that was before the internet, which made things even more difficult.
  18. The temperature outside is still more like winter than summer.
  19. I wonder how many 'normal' people are actually interested in the story. I suspect it may be that journalists think people want to know - or have decided that everyone will be told, when in fact it's only those working in the media who have any interest in the matter.
  20. I remember Duddoos; and I thought the word was embarrassing even when I was a kid; likewise Tegs. My grandma in Radford always said Coursey for pavement; I never heard anyone else use it. With frozen jubblies you'd suck the flavour out of them and then be left with a lump of ice. I could never actually eat one in the normal way.
  21. On the subject of Booker T & The MGs, guitarist Steve Cropper has changed somewhat over the years. Two photos of the same person.
  22. Getting rid of a few surplus high-earners. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65789316
  23. I bought Soul Limbo as a single when it was first released - before it was adopted for cricket purposes - and I still like it today. But I always thought Time is Tight was dull and boring.
  24. I don't understand the technicalities of it at all, but it looks impressive whatever it is.
  25. Just when I was getting used to the new type of weather, I've had to dig out clothes which I thought I wouldn't see again for a few months.
