  1. I quite like watching snooker on TV if I'm not doing anything else and there's nothing better happening.....but not if it's Mark Selby sending everyone to sleep. I couldn't watch it in person in the venue because I'd soon get bored and fidgety. It's not for people with short attention spans, but it works on TV because I can move around and go in and out of the room for a few minutes.
  2. This, apparently, is Pleasant Row; obviously named by someone with a sense of humour. I assume these are the fronts of the houses, but it's not obvious.
  3. My mother shrank in her last few years, mainly due to having osteoporosis, which resulted in her becoming bent over and hunched. She was no longer able to stand upright and vertical.
  4. Are you fully aware of what they're doing to you in your operations ? Maybe they aren't doing what you think or expect; they actually taking bits off.
  5. Reading Col's post made me wonder.........As you get older, does life get easier or more complicated ?
  6. As far as I can remember and as far as I know, I've never heard a cuckoo in real life, outdoors. I was just never in the right place at the right time.
  7. It would be nice if a few other long-standing members would also return and post a few odds-and-sods.
  8. Welcome back ! Can you tell us what you did (or didn't) to re-appear ? There's effectively no Admin around here any longer, so not much chance of any problems being fixed, unless you can sort it yourself.
  9. One of my earliest memories of hearing anything on the radio with the Light Programme. I was always fascinated by Banana Boat Song because I could never understand what he was saying or singing about.
  10. Mine went off and I heard it, but I wasn't in the same room as the phone at the time. It took me a couple of seconds to realise what I was hearing; I first thought it was just a noise outside. By the time I'd realised what it was, it had stopped. Less dramatic than I'd expected.
  11. I always thought Dame Edna was a wonderful creation; making sharp, sarcastic remarks whilst pretending to be innocent and naive. The way she behaved on her TV programme seems like an early version of Alan Partridge. But for some reason I never liked the Les Patterson character. Just didn't find it funny.
  12. Not sure of the year, but the junction of Edwards Lane/Oxclose Lane. The large white building was the Oxclose pub; it's still there but now a Chinese restaurant named Golden Phoenix.
  13. Here's an NEP item from a few months ago covering the history of the place. https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/history/history-former-nottingham-club-generations-8044736
  14. Babels gets quite a few mentions in various old threads. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/search/?q=babel&quick=1
  15. When I was young we always had margarine as the normal everyday thing to spread on bread. Butter was very much something for special occasions and one-off events. My parents treated it as an expensive luxury (I don't know if it actually was) and not affordable for everyday use.
  16. Not heard of them before. I can't find if they were connected to the John Moores of Liverpool, football pools etc.
  17. Seeing the various lights in these posts reminded me of another old thread about paraffin parking lights which were used for on-street parking. My dad had one which had to be filled and put out every night. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/2959-the-parking-light-thing/?tab=comments#comment-26192
  18. My first ever new (as opposed to second-hand) single came from Hindleys in 1967. The Turtles - She'd rather be with me. Cost 6/8d
  19. I can't guarantee it's good or interesting, but I recently came across this new website for local news. So far, I can't decide what I think of it. https://www.nottinghamworld.com/
  20. It's still here. https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/18020-anyone-interested-in-tractors/?tab=comments#comment-601707
  21. I find it amazing that there are people who have sympathy for so-called travellers and their lifestyle. I don't see anything romantic or glamorous about driving over sports grounds, breaking down fences, and leaving piles of litter in their wake.
  22. The Grand National always caused problems at work. There's always someone who thought it would be a good idea to have a Grand National Sweepstake, and they'd go round all the offices trying to blackmail everyone into taking part. A surprisingly large number of people weren't interested (largely on moral grounds) and the sweep organiser could never understand why anyone wouldn't want to take part 'just for a bit of fun'.
  23. For the Rod Stewart followers, this has been on BBC but you may not have seen it.
  24. I've read a couple of books by David Kynaston, and it's slightly scary to realise that you can now read history books which cover the days when you were growing up.
  25. I remember Challand & Ross. They were on Canal Street towards the bottom end of Wilford Road, near what was the Canal Tavern.
