  1. First used it on a Mac when I worked at Central TV on Lenton Lane. What made it slightly different - although I didn't appreciate it at the time - was that it was broadband when almost everybody everywhere was still using dial-up. First time I ever actually used dial-up - at someone's house - I couldn't believe how slow and clunky it was. I'd been spoiled by learning on broadband and assumed that's how it was everywhere.
  2. Mine might be more self-explanatory than some others. It's where I grew up and lived for the first 20+ years of my life.
  3. Sticking "pot" on the end of words seems to be quite common. I've also come across "barmpot" as a variation of barmy.
  4. There seem to be quite a few photos of Finney on Friends Reunited. Hover your mouse over the first image which appears, and then click on the arrow to the right. There are several more photos. http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/if-you-never-got-the-chance-to-catch-the-finney-bus-after-school-you-haven-t-li/Memory/10b10918-0611-4ba0-b3b5-f9322c82e8db
  5. If not-too-old railway photos are your thing, this will keep you quiet for a long time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwf2009/collections/72157626274215250/
  6. Certainly the bulk of 'Saturday Night' was filmed in Nottingham, which is why it is good with the ambience. There are several threads on Nottstalgia discussing that subject, as well as the locations of the few 'foreign' scenes. The pub where Albert Finney falls down the stairs is/was the White Horse on Ilkeston Road. The building is still there but it's now a cafe. The other pub in the film - where he gets beaten up - is in London.
  7. All the info you need according to Picture the Past http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM007025&prevUrl=
  8. That photo is the junction of Peveril Street and Alfreton Road on the edge of Radford.
  9. You may have already found some of these photos, (and this is 1950s), but....
  10. I'm beginning to feel young with the talk of cars and motorbikes. In the first half of the 60s the only transport I was buying were Dinky, Corgi and Matchbox cars.
  11. Wilford Toll Bridge hasn't charged for many years. These days there aren't so many people taking sheep to Nottingham. It was closed to traffic and rebuilt in the mid-70s, but is currently being enlarged and modified to take the tram extension. A few photos of it amongst this lot http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10671
  12. Quite right MeltonStilton ! Everyone lives on a budget, their own personal budget according to their means. It's just that some people's budget is bigger than others. Like kids again....mine's bigger than yours...na na na na
  13. I may be able to come up with something. Do you know the name of the road they lived on?
  14. Welcome to Nottstalgia Amyamelie1. There's a lot about the Red Lion Street/Narrow Marsh area in various threads here, and if you want to get an idea of what it all looked like in your grandad's days go to this link http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php and in the Search box put Red Lion Marsh. You'll get about 40 photos to look at. And for a high-res map of the area in the 1920s have a look at the PDF half way down this page http://cms.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/leisure/archives/exhibitions/broadmarshandnarrowmarsh/slumclearanceandredevelopment.htm You can see Pearson's Yard at u
  15. Start a new thread for it? If we don't have a summer meet-up soon, it will be time for the autumn meet-up.
  16. It's not quite a blank screen, it's just sound, no pictures. You should be seeing a blue bar with white numbers. Make sure you have your sound turned up before you go to that link again.
  17. That map is around 1880s. A bit before my time.
  18. Back in those days, Arnold seems to have been full of Methodist places.........THREE of them in that small area (not to mention the Baptists)
  19. Welcome to Nottstalgia BecB. Like poohbear, I can't tell you why the road had a name change, there are cases of that happening in most parts of Nottingham, and it was probably down to some anonymous council/corporation official who decided that was what was needed. However, back in the late 19th century, that road was more obviously an important part of the old Basford. Depending on the age of your boyfriend's house, it may be on here.
  20. Actually, you were reading the wrong bit . It was DAVIDW and Cliff Ton, but I'm sure no-one will be offended. To prove it, here's a map of Trinity Square in the 1920s where the Garage - and lack of alternative - stands out.
  21. Do you have any more details of the address rather than just 'Trinity Square'? In those days Trinity Square didn't have many places suitable for a car dealers. I wonder if it was the building/garage later used by Sam Ward's.
  22. Even if someone hasn't been banned, photos can disappear if they are moved or deleted by the person who posted them. You get warning messages if they've gone from Flickr or Photobucket, but that's not the case in this instance. It must've been a direct link to where they were stored by the owner, and that link no longer exists.
