  1. Mick and Ashley, Lenton Times have the answer to your query. Scroll quite a long way down, and you'll find various old photos of the place I think you're referring to http://www.lentontim...e_boulevard.htm I remember that place. Always used to go there because they were cheaper than anywhere else. Couldn't understand why no-one else seemed to realise that. I was disappointed when they closed
  2. That's something I've recently learned! And I also seem to have the same 1920s map as you. The house in question is actually shown on the map but gets slightly lost in the crease (on the corner of Bowness Avenue). It was obviously one of the very early ones
  3. Digging around in family history research has produced another surprise for me; discovered my dad was born in 1925 at a house on Stockhill Circus - never knew we had any links with that part of Nottingham. I assume they were "council houses" or whatever they were called back then; or could they have been privately owned at that time?
  4. Congratulations to all concerned - those who I've met and those who I haven't
  5. It's surprising how many words the Indians are responsible for http://www.zompist.com/indiawords.html
  6. Although I believe Davy J was in Coronation Street for a time before the Monkees started. On a musical note....back in the mid 60s, with everybody I knew you were either a fan of the Beatles or the Monkees; one was for serious people and the other was for the girlies. At the time there was no choice for any real music fans. But in later years I began to listen to the Monkees material again and, regardless of whether they played on it or whether they were real or manufactured, I realised that their singles were bl**dy good and have stood the test of time better than a lot from that era. I hav
  7. I'd agree that is more difficult than my last effort
  8. Welcome tony2doors. Don't know if you noticed but you'd replied to a thread which had been sitting idle for 2 and half years . And the person who originally posted the message hasn't logged back in for nearly that long, so I'm not sure if they will see your comment. But don't worry...........you could send them a PM which will alert them to the fact that someone has replied, and you may kickstart this topic back into action
  9. Doesn't seem that long ago since I took the photos, but I looked at the date and it was March 2000, so that gives a starting point for when the pub was demolished.
  10. I've heard the argument about it being more practical for staging events. It may be true and I'd accept that , but it still doesn't take into account the large amount of time when there aren't any events there. They're saying that it's good for 33% of the time, so it's ok for it to look awful the other 66% of the time
  11. That didn't take long! Beefsteak is correct. The photo shows the right-hand embankment of this bridge And behind me when I took the original was this .....and I'm surprised to see on Streetview that the pub no longer exists
  12. Strangely compulsive viewing. Not much happens for a long time - but you keep watching just in case something does
  13. Any takers on this location? It's one I took about 10/12 years ago and I've just looked on Streetview; the whole embankment is much more overgrown now. For a clue - I was standing in the middle of a road (left to right on this photo) and I would have been under a long-demolished bridge with the railway going above me
  14. That sometimes happens when the person who posted the original message forgets they did it and never gets round to coming back to this site. Prefect has never logged on again since the day they joined and posted that first question
  15. Still exists in the same place, although not perhaps in the way you remember it http://www.bodeganottingham.com/
  16. I'll add another to that series - Duddoos for sweets
  17. I don't know where it came from, but now you've brought the subject up I remember it - even though I haven't heard it used for well over 40 years. Slight variation...I seem to recall it in the plural, as in Babb-ars. Even so, it had the same meaning as yours and was used in the same circumstances. I think it was one of those expressions which was only used by adults talking to very young children/babies who probably couldn't answer back anyway
  18. Young at heart - The Bluebells Keep on running - Spencer Davis Grandad - Clive Dunn I'm alive - The Hollies
  19. Stu is close enough (closer than Wembley anyway) Today it looks like this http://maps.google.c...,73.35,,0,-0.36 If you zoom out of the Streetview image you'll find you are at the back of the City Ground
  20. A clue which might give it away. Football
  21. If you haven't noticed, there's also another thread on this subject, which has a selection of photos - old and new. http://nottstalgia.c...re&fromsearch=1 I know which I prefer. The current concrete slab of nothingness is a disaster. And on a slightly more topical point, I see that the occupants of tent corner are about to be invited to consider their ways http://www.bbc.co.uk...mshire-17175992
  22. Not Meadows, but that is definitely closer
  23. Not Bulwell. Opposite end of Nottingham.
  24. Can I dive in on the railway photo. The photographer is almost under the bridge which takes Lenton Lane over the railway line. In the background on the right is the former ROF, and the castle is up on the left horizon.
  25. OK here's one - where do you reckon this is? The houses still exist, but all the railway architecture has totally gone
