  1. This is what you need http://www.amazon.co...33382568&sr=8-1 I've owned it for several years. It has all the original radio and tv theme tunes from the 50s and 60s. Such as:- Music while you work Childrens' Favourites Dr Finlay Housewives Choice Dick Barton The Archers Down Your Way Animal Magic Top of the Form Paul Temple They are all the original recordings as you remember them, not modern re-makes or updated versions. This is the recording of your youth. Get it and go back in time.
  2. In the photo of Severns in its original location..... on the left of the building - under the "S" - is an alley to the rear of the place. Here's that alley from the inside looking out onto the street. With arranged passers-by.
  3. Does this show it? It certainly shows Fred Bunney's
  4. Congratulations on almost certainly being the first person to ever use the word chiaroscuro on this forum
  5. Something to listen to......... (make sure you have your sound turned up) http://www.radiorewind.co.uk/sounds/with_a_song_in_my_heart.mp3
  6. West End Arcade gets a few mentions earlier, and it has a history I didn't know of. The Council House in Slab Square was built in the 1920s. The building before that was the Exchange which was built in the 1720s. At street level within the Exchange was an area known as the Shambles which had, among other things, a market and especially butchers stalls. It looks fantastically gruesome… When the Exchange was demolished to make way for the Council House, all the butchers stalls from the Shambles were moved to the newly-constructed West End Meat Market (otherwise West End Arcade). So it was or
  7. The original just describes it as "in the 1960s". Looking at the cars I'd guess around 65-66. The petrol brand is Cleveland
  8. Are those two recesses designed to support/accept some other structure?
  9. Are Beeston Cut and Beeston Canal two names for the same thing? Various websites describe Beeston Cut as a bypass of the Trent from somewhere in Beeston to somewhere in Lenton. And on maps today there is a canal going from the south-west corner of Beeston Rylands which eventually joins the Nottingham canal near Dunkirk, so that fits the bill. And it certainly doesn't go anywhere near any power stations This might give a few answers http://canalplan.org.uk/gazetteer/rh1c
  10. Not a brilliant photo, but you can just see the garage and petrol pumps in this shot
  11. The taxis now all live on Wheeler Gate (off to the right), which is one-way coming into the Square Like this.....http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Wheeler+Gate,+Nottingham,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&ll=52.952827,-1.149729&spn=0.001829,0.005053&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.320439,82.792969&oq=wheeler+ga&t=h&hnear=Wheeler+Gate,+Nottingham,+United+Kingdom&z=18&layer=c&cbll=52.952774,-1.150624&panoid=ICxJA5_UDvOUpGhrElKK4g&cbp=12,136.89,,0,7.21
  12. Congratulations to both. May well turn up; I know what you both look like, so I know who to aim for.
  13. Nothing like a bit of mass hysteria to keep the headline writers busy. So why are people queuing all day for petrol? No-one has gone on strike. The tanker drivers have said they will strike at some point if they can't reach an agreement on various matters. At the moment they are working normally and delivering normally. Even if they do plan to strike, they have to give 7 days notice, so the earliest time when supplies might be disrupted is a week tomorrow. The government have been helpful, firstly by telling people to stockpile petrol - then retracting that advice when it was pointed out th
  14. And just to make certain nobody can write any letters to their MP complaining about it all, they hike the price of a stamp to stupid levels
  15. It was operating as a Lace Museum - or summat similar - until some time ago, but I think it was closed by the same mentality which is closing Brewhouse Yard and other attractions. Last time I went past Severns, it appeared to be closed and waiting for something to happen.
  16. When the Streetview car went by, the Oddbins shop is about where Severns was. Spot the improvement
  17. I've always thought that sticking the Severns building on Castle Road was not very clever, because it just sits in the middle of nowhere and looks out of place Whereas in its original location, as Stu demonstrates, it made sense
  18. According to the map in this thread http://nottstalgia.c...es&fromsearch=1 which is late 1940s, it went from Long Row
  19. Guess it could've been these to the left of the pub. Picturesque now in old photos; a bit basic at the time http://www.pictureth...004380&prevUrl=
  20. On what evidence? Might've been true 10 or 15 years ago, but that isn't the case now. The amount of gun crime is minimal compared to many other cities in the country.
  21. And in the news only a few days ago, the authorities were again talking about ways to stop binge drinking, and yet there were a lot more pubs in cities 150 years ago than there are now. As an example, I've seen it mentioned that when the Charlotte Street area was cleared for Victoria Station, over 20 pubs were demolished.
  22. Here's one http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream
  23. Even though a lot of it is now blocked off to traffic, you can still see all seven roads converging
  24. This place? Boarded up here, but you can still just see the Kingston's name across the top Near the crossroads where Carrington Street crossed Canal Street
