  1. I didnt realise that the Malt Cross was closed - just shows how much attention I pay when I visit Nottingham! The Malt Cross is lovely and if they are renovating it, the place will be even better than it has been. Its a very laid back place and I hope that they dont affect that chilled atmosphere. I recall the Sapla restaurant in the basement, and it was appalling.
  2. Good for Froch. A certain amount of arrogance is needed in top class sports otherwise they wouldnt be top class. I must admit that Froch's punch was one of the most impressive I have seen in more than a decade. Also, Froch has not sold out from Nottingham. He still feels it is his home. Many would go to the bright lights of London.
  3. I tend to wear a sun hat (cricket style, the floppy one with a wide brim) when I'm away somewhere hot. I also have a white fedora which I rarely use.
  4. After many years of research and inquiry regarding healing of skin wounds, skin ulcers and other nasty stuff, there is something that is shown to be the best of anything. Its honey. Plain old honey.
  5. I dont really unpack. I have certain essentials that I never remove from my pack. First aid kit, battery back up, adaptor plugs, spare SIM card, spare network SIM, A very cheap Pay as you go phone, (For the SIM card) toilet paper sealed in a plastic bag, some nappy bags ( extremely useful for all manner of things) three bags of peanuts and several packs of the little bags of orange juice with straws, several foil blankets (for the cold - invaluable and they are waterproof too, so can be used in a downpour) I am certain that in some part of my pack there is a pair of underpants which have b
  6. KatyJ I was in Russia in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and as I have said, my mrs is an ice skating fan. We were in a restaurant in Moscow when the Russian couple won the Gold. Its a close second to Torvill and Dean, but the same kind of excitement.
  7. Sometimes I can sleep with my eyes open. This is not usually a problem, and can be quite useful. When I was in the army I could sleep bolt upright with my eyes open. It came in handy on many occasions, although it could be very creepy for the lads. I recall my section sgt explaining to me that during an exercise, I stared constantly at the lads assembling a regimental aid post. I didnt move or blink, just sat and stared. The sgt asked if I was all right and received no reply, just a long stare. He then went to question me about why I was staring, but soon realised that I was fast asleep. As wi
  8. I sent it to my partner's family in Russia. As you can imagine they are quite into winter sports. She is an ice skating fan. They loved it. The Mrs is no stranger to Nottingham and recognised many of the places.
  9. The VR postboxes are very rare indeed. There is one in the village near to where i live, Norton in Cleveland.
  10. I would have done the falling down bit in front of the Council House rather well. I have been practicing falling down in the Market Square for some decades now.......
  11. Porridge was one of the most perceptively written and excellently acted comedy shows of all time. It didnt rely on canned laughter or catch phrases, but just plain old wit. The actors were not comedians but actors who did comedy. The repartee between the characters was perfectly timed.
  12. The Radford Road tram stop would appear to be approximately where the O is in Scottern Hill. I have heard of Skottowe but not Scottern.
  13. Notts Police had a minimum height of 5ft 8 in 1979! I know, I was measured against the board in Central Police Station and just made it (odd how the army measured my height as 5 ft 10 in)
  14. Melissa If it is any help, my uncle Tom Hickling was related to the Milwards of Hyson Green, those were my grandfather, Lawrence Milward, Grandmother Ada, and the various children. They lived on Birkin Avenue in the early 70s but before that they lived close to Randal Street near Radford Road. I think the name of the place was Edsor Grove, but possibly Cliff Ton, the mapmeister could help here in a map of Hyson Green in the 1960s showing the numerous small groves (which could not have traffic on them, they were just brick paved terraced houses facing each other)
  15. Portello! now that is something I have not heard in years. I adored it! I think the closest you can get to it now is Vimto.
  16. Cliff Ton, again the mapmeister! Its interesting to see how Hyson Green used to me a couple of centuries ago. I can work out where Bobbers Mill Road is and the basic outline of Radford Road and Gregory Boulevard, but the word "boulevard" smacks of a late 19c air. Not that Hyson Green is like Paris! I too had not heard of Hyson tea, but there may be a connection. Ison did build houses, and in Pleasant Row. It might have been pleasant then..... I'm presuming that the block of houses with gardens is approximately where the Cricket Players pub is now, or possibly a little further along Radford
  17. Melissa, did any of your Hickling relations have a son/uncle/ etc called Tom? Ex Royal Marine? Lived near Churchfield Road?
  18. The Nottingham trams are superb - clean, safe, work to time, reliable and cheap.
  19. I have some vague memories of "mighty fine". That phrase comes back to me over the years.
  20. My uncle was a Hickling from Radford. If I can be a piece in the jigsaw then I would be happy to help.
  21. Now that I do remember! I recall her getting on a bus at Market Square and I was horrified.
  22. Hi David I was at Berridge in the late 60s. My father went to Pipewood camp and I have some photos of him there, and that would be the early 1940s. I'll post them if I can get them scanned.
  23. The most likely explanation is that there was a local builder called Isson. What is now the Forest rec was originally a horse racing ground.
  24. Even now, when I listen to Barry White singing "you're the first and last and everything" I'm sure he sings " You're my sun, my moon, my garlic sauce" Next time you hear it, try and not to think about garlic sauce.
