  1. Yep it is a real book, about a young boy who learns the art of fly fishing from a Scottish game keeper and then follows his life through to him becoming a school master between the wars and all the time following his passion for fly fishing, leant my copy to someone and never saw it again (damn) but it is a nice read and quite amusing in places if you get the chance to get hold of a copy Rog
  2. Fly fishing by J R Hartley, a nice book to read, I liked the bit where the school mistress fell into the stream whilst J R was stalking that big wild brown trout Rog
  3. Happy Birthday to the Beatles, 50 years since their first appearance at the Cavern, the birth place of modern music Rog !bravo!

  6. "Is Nottingham that bad?" Nah, it's just that everywhere else has gone soft, I can remember a time when you couldn't get into Nottingham unless you had half a tab missing Rog

  8. Also a favourite with the yanks and a certain type of lady during WW2, Yes Cliff Ton I used to walk passed the place most days when catching my bus back to Clifton from Peoples college in the late 60's early 70's, remember the bomb site car park on the right just after you had gone passed the pub and the cobblers accross the road? ah the memories are coming back!! Rog
  9. Rob the oracle has a picture he's going to send me, I remember that day Ian/Kev, that's the day that young lady at East Kirkby asked you not to break the chain link fencing with your camera lens Ian!!! Rog
  10. If you visit East Kirkby aircraft museum in Lincolnshire you can take your own picture at the side of their meridian line, all you need to do is pay to visit the museum which is well worth the fee about £6.00 and you can tour the site, see a Lancaster bomber doing taxi runs on certain days, lots of historical exibits on display and they have a very nice cafe, I think Beefsteak might have a picture of the line somewhere, if not I will trawl through my pics Rog
  11. Brilliant Knaylor, This is what this site is all about, I notice on the eastern side of the map there's villages under the names of Norton Disney, North Scarle and Doddington, these are all in Lincolnshire now, in fact i only live about a mile and half from Norton Disney, very interesting map which I shall study when i get a bit more time, thankyou Rog
  12. Although it's not Nottingham you can walk through an old railway tunnel in Ashbourne Derbyshire (sorry) it's now been made into a pedestrian walkway, there are lights the full length and a proper foot path, at the side of the path is the original track ballast, it's part of the old Tissington railway track and well worth the visit to see the original brickwork, at the Tissington end there is a series of audio speakers that when you pass them replicate the sound of an old steam loco passing through the tunnel just to add a bit of atmosphere, I think the tunnel is about 300-400 yards long and le
  13. Quite right there Alan, it was Elliot house, in later years he became a member of the city council, something to do with education and believe it or not at that time he was dead against corporal punishment but whilst he was a school master he ruled by fear of corporal punishment. Other house masters I remember were, Mr Hind Fleming house (after his retirement it was Mr Smart) Mr Sturtivant Lovell house (later it was Mr Burns) Mr Townsend either Brittain or Kenyon House (someone will know) Not sure about the other houses which consisted of Penney Hunt Whittle 8 in all Rog
  14. Seem to recall the tunnel being used by HGV's during the building of the power station to transport aggregates from the gravel works on the Beeston side of the river, (possibly Butterly aggregates), aggregates were also shipped in from the gravel quarries in the Hilton area which was along the then A50/A38 roads (Hilton gravels)I think Kier was one of the main contractors moving aggregates and concrete along with Hoveringham gravels Rog
  15. I think I would end up with a broken neck to go with my broken leg, sure don't look safe, but in saying that it won't be long before riding them could be an olympic sport Rog
  16. I remember Mr Thom (my boy's are good boy's) Mr Riddel (Come here boy I will beat you within an inch of your life) Mr Burns (get him talking about the war and say good by to the lesson) Mr Perry was indoor 10,000 meter running champion Remember Doc Chapman (French master) Mr Dobinson (English) Mr Smart (Tech drawing) Mr Brittain (Tech drawing/Engineering) Mr Holt (music) the list goes on Rog 1964 - 1968 Fleming house

  20. Always reading the "Commando" paperbacks (think they were about 1/6d each then)but also anything to do with wildlife especially birds btw Ashley, I have read Mein Kampf, thought it was a bit boring and a bit of a slog to get through it Rog
  21. As you say Ian the flypast was called off because of low cloud, however, I did take my camera to work and at the allotted time of 13.30 hrs I stood outside the office in the rain waiting just in case, alas, 30 minutes later, frozen to the bone and wet through I found out from a mates scanner that the formation had landed safely back at Cottesmore, oh well can't win em all, nice to get out of the office for a bit though, by the way at 14.15hrs the cloud lifted and we had a very clear sky for about an hour where I saw plenty of Typhoon and Tornado activity Rog
  22. Claringburn and Codd at the bottom of Sneinton road used to have the pumps inside the garage and the pipes on booms going across the pavement to the roadside, they sold "Major" petrol and diesel and Shell four star petrol, Major petrol was 2 star 5/1d a gallon, 3 star 5/3d a gallon and the Shell 4 star at 5/11d a gallon I think the diesel was 4/9d a gallon that was back in 1968 when I started my mechanical technology apprenticeship, last time I was in that area I think the place was a quick fit tyre establishment Rog
  23. Spent 23 years working at a brickyard/clay quarry, Bradley and Craven semi plastic brick presses, Craven Fawcett brick press, Hoffman kilns, (one kept burning from the 1930's until mid 90's) and giant crushing mills with 4 1/2 ton crushing rollers, we made common bricks, red rustic, pin hole rustic, sand faced, as well as clay cable covers (patented) Oh happy days I'll go and get my anorak now Rog
  24. I seem to remember there being a residential home about opposite the djanogly center or just a bit further down the hill towards the city, the main entrance was on Nottingham road and there was also a side entrance on one of the side roads leading off Nottm road but can't quite remember what that was called, I think the home may have been called the Gables though, this would be in the mid to late 90's Rog
  25. I remember the Clifton car company, When my dad bought a new (to him) car from them they asked if they could have his old Hillman Minx to use as an advert for their body shop, of course my dad agreed and they sprayed one half (down the length) a pale blue and left the original black down the other half and displayed it on their forecourt, can anyone remember seeing it? reg number 796 CNN Rog
