  1. There's one of them tag machines at the National Railway museum just as I remember it at Nottingham Midland, in fact I had a play on it when I was up there last Autumn Rog
  2. Ayup Beefsteak, I agree and all things being equal I should still have the four seater pickup so can accommodate 3 more, If however the aviation day was to be in April, that is when the airshow pilot starts his daily flying display practice from 08.00hrs, just a thought Rog
  3. I remember I would be about 8/9years old and went from the 68 terminus at Clifton to Clifton bridge to go fishing in the Trent about where the Fairham brook runs into it, I also lost me watch on that fishing trip but found it again in the brook the following day, It was still working. Bus fare on that day was 3d Rog
  4. Yep I agree with Kev, the driver was isolated in his little cab, but I don't remember anyone saying thankyou to the conductor when they got off the bus though Rog
  5. Ayup Alan, Know where you mean, Could'nt wave torque wrench as I'm flying a desk these days but will keep my eyes open for you in future, failing that it looks like we are all going on an aviation day in the next three months so see you then Rog

  7. Ayup Littlebro, I think the plaque is on the south side of the old bridge just before the cycle track takes a steep dive to the road below, accessible from the cycle track very easily, either end of the old bridge used to be or still is plaque's with a picture of a Pheonix on which I believe was on the coat of arms for the Clifton family, it also featured on the badge for the Fairham school together with a picture of the bridge. Hope this has helped Rog
  8. More to the point Ashley, was Des O'Connor?
  9. Hi RWK, I think the school off Derby road you refer to was on College street, part of Peoples back in the 60s/70s old Victorian building with windows too high up the walls to see out of, we also had Monday afternoon sessions there in 1969 Rog
  10. Talking of engines, here's a Sulzer taken at York this autumn Rog
  11. Brilliant link there Littlebro, answered my question about Kestrel straight away, will enjoy reading the rest now, many thanks Rog
  12. Snowy owl (nyctea scandiaca) first nested in the Shetlands in 1967 but since 1975 there has been no male bird on the islands during the breeding season, they are a lot bigger than the barn owl (tyto alba) by some 20-30cm also a true white colour as opposed to the barn owls off white. They mainly live and breed in Scandinavia but if you cut a straight line between there and parts of the Uk it's not such a great distance and being carried on the prevailing north wind it's not impossible to see them in the UK, there was at least one sighted in Lincolnshire in the last couple of years but as yet
  13. Ayup firbeck, Your picture of Falcon bought back a couple of memories, was it's sister engine called Kestrel? if so I had the pleasure of working for the chief fabrication engineer on that project, a guy called Frank Bexton, I think that engine was fitted with one center spot light and finished it's time off in Russia, perhaps you can confirm this or otherwise add to the story Rog

  18. Ayup Fynger, Remember that other great school song as sung by the polar explorer in Tomkinsons schooldays, from Ripping yarns (again) by Michael Palin and Terry Jones (my school my school) Rog
  19. After the manual cast iron mangles with the tin wash bath under them I think Hotpoint bought a single tub washing machine out with a separate mangle that could be fitted to the top right hand side of the machine via a small drive shaft, you could pull the washing out of the tub with the tong's (supplied) and feed the wet clothes into the mangle which by this time was going round at a rate of knots, the drained water would fall back in the washer tub and the wrung out clothes could be deposited in the tin bath placed at the back of the machine, if I remember right this mangle attachment was blo

  21. You are right about them owning the rights at Clifton bridge, I think it was up stream on the Lenton side (north) below the bridge was day ticket water collected by some one from the Prince of Wales farm as we new it, Talking of the Prince of Wales farm, which we weren't The old Prince of Wales used to stay there on his visits to the area, (that's how it got the name) would that be Queen Victoria's son? Rog
  22. Thanks for that Rob, Talking of wash days of old, Ican remember when I were a nipper one of the old birds down our yard got one of her threpenney bits stuck in one of them old fashioned mangles, she were mangling away gossiping when the rollers must have caught her pinny and in it went, boy did she squeek Rog
  23. We gotta get outta this place (the animals) Rog
  24. Harrisons plantation is the other side of Old Coach Road to Raleigh pond and it runs from there through to Martins pond which I believe fishing has been banned and the place turned into an inner city nature reserve. The problem there is "who looks after the place now there are no fishermen, as well as getting revenue from the fishing the fishermen also policed the place, looking out for vandals, fly tipping etc, fishing is also a good way of telling the quality of the water through the quality of fish caught, I've not been back for a few years but I can imagine the state of this "inner city na
