  1. Ayup Rob, Accuracy is not the name of the game, it's all about brainwashing the British public into thinking the powers that be know best, whatever the subject. As long as they can come up with a quickfire answer the public will be satisfied, allbeit for a short while but that shortwhile gives them time to think about the implications and where to aportion the blame. I think what i'm trying to say is, "the clowns don't know what they are talking about again" Rog
  2. Catch 4 medium flies and put them in a clean jar, place jar and flies in fridge, Take 1 match and split down the middle so you have 2 lengths of thin match, cut the last third of one thin match and use long piece to form the wing, use the other bit to form the tail plane, super glue together, now put 4 spots of super glue along the wing spaced equally, take now dormant flies out of the fridge and place one on each spot of glue along the wings, gently warm your miniature aircraft to bring flies upto full revs, sit back and have a good time watching the flying display. Boredom free's the mi
  3. Ayup all, Anything by SLADE, especially "Mama we're all crazy now". always reminds me of the Colliers arms down Cinderhill, Used to get "Doll" the landlady to turn up the volume and drive the olduns nuts, I'm older myself now but would still up the volume if it were on Rog
  4. Ayup all, I think it was "I want to hold your hand" by the Beatles, got it from big co op on Parliament street, Rog
  5. Rob, The name has just come to me, MICHAEL. it was a little 0 4 0 saddle tank. I used to see it working the line near to the old Lenton lane, about where the Honda car sales place is now. Rog
  6. Ayup Rob, Nice to read about steam related loco's. Can you remember the little loco that was used for shunting coal about at the Wilford power station? Rog
  7. Ayup All, When I were growing up down Bathley street I used to play with a lad who's parent's owned/ran Squires removal's, Does any one have any information about them or the lad, I'm sure his name was Timothy, probably in his mid 50s now? Whilst on the subject can anyone remember Timson's bakery, it must have been in the Wilford grove area because for some reason I was allowed in the bake house when I were right small. My grandparents lived on Wilford Grove you see. Rog
  8. Ayup Alison, May I suggest,( If your'e in the UK at the time ) To stand outside the houses of parliament with a suitably sized dustbin liner and capture some HOT AIR that eminates from the doors at PMs question time, there should be enough to float you back to OZ with plenty to spare to make you're own hot air balloon and use you're tin bath as the basket/gondola. Is there a possibility of being taxed on this tin waterborn craft of your's or are you still allowed to fulfill ones dreams in OZ just like the UK in the 50s? Rog
  9. Ayup Dodie Ah! yes I can remember that club now, Just down Albert street from the picture house, I dont think it was a miners club though. Some Saturday afternoons when my uncles were at my grannies they would go to that club and I would be allowed to tag along and watch them play snooker. I'll have a think to see if anymore memories come to light about the place, Remember the factory at the bottom of the street, I think it was some sort of engineering works? Rog
  10. Ayup Radford,,Your'e right about the whistle stop, it was opposite Trinity square car park and under the Vic hotel, I used to go there during lunchbreak from peoples college 68/69/70, some sort of railway theme, you could get double diamond though, The Welbeck thats been spoken about was more or less near the exit from vic center leading on to Glasshouse street, and it did have western style swing doors, bit of a western theme there also a bit rough if memory serves. Rog
  11. Ayup Pemberton, Yes Mr Thom was head when I was there " My boys are good boys" he used to say, The old school has a web site you know, The best part about Fairham I remember was, It was close to Fairham Brook where I used to go fishing after getting my mark in class, Who ever said school days are the best of your life didn't know me because I hated them ( they didn't teach fishing) Ha Ha. Rog
  12. Ayup all, Well I see the powers that be have successfully removed more of our heritage, Yes they've filled the Lido in and built houses on the site. The kids say they vandalise things, bus shelters, shop windows, etc because "There's nowt to do" The council say there's "No money in the pot to provide recreational facilities for youngsters" They Bl@@dy well found some money to do away with a recreational facility. How much did they get for that bit of real estate? If anyone is guilty of Anti Social Behaviour it's the clowns in that house at the end of the Market Square. What next- Convert the
  13. Biffo the bear, Mini the Minx, Lord Snooty and pals. Not the same since they have been computer generated. Just as a matter of interest when I was in Dundee last year there are some statues of Desperate Dan,Mini minx and someone else I can't remember in the middle of town, does anyone know the significance of them? Rog
  14. Venoes cough mixture, Vick in a bowl of hot water, stick your head over the bowl and put a towel over your head and inhale the fumes. Probably against all human rights today Rog
  15. Ayup All, I see from the lack of replies to this post that no one wants to own up to attending this school, Clifton in the 60s was full of folk from the Meadows and St Anns, and to some extent the close knit community came with them. All right I know that inside toilets and back gardens went to some folks heads but they still worked down the pit or at the gun factory or players, and after all their roots and memories were still of the Meadows era, so Who went to school at Clifton? Go on don't be ashamed to admit it. Rog
  16. Ayup Lynmee, Me dad used to love Bluies, he would have them with bacon for Saturday tea. I would go to a few spots I knew whilst out shooting, ( no you don't have to shoot them) and drop them off for him. The folks out here in Lincolnshire have never heard of them, but I know quite a lot of places near to me where to get them, so if they do become popular out here I could make a few bob. Rog
  17. Ayup all, Every Saturday we had to visit my granny in Bulwell, she lived down Albert street next to the school, The mornings were took up at the sixpenny rush either at the top of the street (now the Co op) or at Leno's, the afternoon was spent tormenting my grand fathers chickens in the long garden he had ( it went through to Deptford street) If it was a hot day we would pick coal tar from between the cobbles and make our own marbles, obviously getting a clout for getting the stuff all over our clothes, the prefered method of removing the offending tar was by rubbing butter or marg on it to
  18. Ayup BIP, Just looked at that site, Boy did some memories come back then, great site and the photo's certainly jogged the old grey cells. Thankyou for posting it Rog
  19. Ayup Alison, Just looked in my book called "The Meadows Remembered" Under the heading" Rising Tide and Soggy Cake" Quote: It was 19 March 1947. I was a 15 year old apprentice hairdresser working at Rita's No7 Wilford Road, overlooking the railway. We saw water coming along the railway lines about 3 O'clock. I recieved a phone call from home telling me to "come home while I still can"Unquote This was from an extract by Mrs Marj Bunfield (nee Harris) Hope this as answered your question Cheers Rog
  20. Ayup John, I would be very interested in seeing these maps when you get them sorted Cheers Rog
  21. Ayup Katyjay, For what it's worth I've just scoffed a bag full of Cadbury's mini eggs to myself and now I feel ill. Never learn even after 50 years since I first got the taste for the stuff. Rog
  22. Ayup Mick, Eagle comic featured a guy on the front sheet called Dan Dare, in the top left corner was a red background with a picture of a flying eagle on it. Center pages were always devoted to an exploded diagram of some technological fete, very informative. Can't think of any of the other characters who were in it at the moment. It was printed on thin glossy paper if memory serves me right. Rog
  23. Ayup John, This might sound a stupid question but, How would the mines get dewatered in a situation like the flood of 47? I know how we dewater in the "surface mining" industry but thats easy to reach higher ground, underground having a lot more issues, was work suspended, how efficient was the pumps, and what measures if any were in place should such a disaster happen? Rog
  24. Ayup Mick, I remember the term Puddywinks, You'd say that if anyone asked you to do something you considered easy. Today you're more likely to hear "No problem" or "Yeh it's a doddle" and what about "SOZ" instead of sorry, Jeez can't these yungans speek proper Inglish. Rog
  25. Thanks BIP, the cells are beginning to kick back in again. Rog
