  1. Remember in the mid 80's booking a "Delightful cabin, set in beautiful pine forest, overlooking the Helford river, on the Lizard peninsular, Cornwall" for the Easter break. When we arrived after traffic chaos down the M5, was shocked to find a breeze block building (single skin walls) in a field with a few lleylandi bushes scattered around. Was pouring with drizzle and rain and everything was damp inside includiing the beds, so trying to sound upbeat I said "no worries get some heat going and it'll be fine" Found the bloody thing was all electric with a coin meter up on the wall ! cannot re
  2. Went for an early morning walk with my dog along a deserted beach on mid NSW coast, that had almost been swept away with a big storm surge, due to an abnormally high tide and 348mm of rain in last 2 days ! Huge 3mtr breakers still pounding in from the Pacific ocean ! Sat on a dune for a while in awe at the power of nature. Then walked back to our RV and sat in the morning sunshine in 28C with a slice of toast and a cuppa of Yorkshire tea. Life's good.
  3. God I miss Pukka pies ! Chicken& mushroom, mushy peas on real chips in a tray -- beautiful .
  4. When I was over there last, the chinese at the bottom of westdale lane was pretty good, particularly the spare ribs. My brother in law also used the chippy in Burton joyce as he thought it was good, they live in Burton Pastures estate, the chippy also did kebabs. Remember years ago Pancho's in Sherwood did a mean kebab. I love donner kebabs ! Can't get a decent one in oz ! Went to Chungs on mapperley tops - expensive but good, Treetops - but meal was not too crash hot ! I had a steak an it woz orrible ! Witherspoons for the two for one deal on steak night, or curry night ! cheap and che
  5. Homemade steak and kidney pudding (steamed) with real chips (not frozen rubbish) gravy peas and crusty bread and real butter. Tesco's strawberry trifle for afters.
  6. We still get those Fray Bentos tinned pies here in oz, pastry is ok but the meat looks more of a slurry than that picture. I love a chunky steak pie, or a chicken and mushroom (mmmn Pukka pies) but sadly the Aussies make what I call "dog meat pies" all minced up and usually contain anything from beef, mutton or even buffalo ! They taste ok but the texture is awful !
  7. My mum worked at Raywarps as a machinist in the 60's 70's I think.
  8. Amazing technology, wonder what the batteries look like and the video picture actually received? Obviously they didn't want to show that. Imagine the possibilities when the technology comes to the joe public. I know there are video drones around but the size of that thing is what is so clever. Big brother could be watching anywhere. (and probably is !)
  9. The Goose, Tavern, Cavo and the Carlton pubs, were all my stomping ground in the late 60's, 70's. 80's Saw some great local bands in the Goose Thurs or Friday nights. Could not believe when I was there a couple of years ago to see just a pile of rubble where the Goose had stood.
  10. Yes a stunning video ! Love the way he grabs the guitar near the end and touches the end wall to slow down, then shoots up to the next level ! amazing.
  11. My son lives in Nottm and works as an environmental health officer/manager, he was telling me several months ago that rats are becoming a big problem in most places in the uk. He had a statistic which I cannot really remember fully, but was something like, no matter where you are, day or night you are never further than 5 meters from a rat ! They are also becoming immune to some poisons now ! Safest way to get rid of them is a trap, but not a pleasant experience. They carry lots of nasty diseases from TB, to Leptospirosis (spelling) which can be in their urine. Get some professional help t
  12. Yes makes you wonder. We currently have UK detectives here in oz, interviewing ladies with regard the Rolf Harris affair ! was on our ABC news last night. Not sticking up for any of the sick bastards but with all the clamour and hoo har at the pop shows etc. it must have been easy for their temptations to be satisfied with little chance in their eyes of being caught at that time. They deserve their comeuppance and day in court. I am a male obviously, but I was sexually assaulted as a child, by one of my dad's so called mates, and it does have a nasty impact on the whole of your life I neve
  13. In my time at Gedling I never stayed school dinners once ! I used to rush to the cycle sheds with my mate Derek Culley, and pedal like hell along Wollaton avenue to Perlethorpe, we had a knack of cycling from one side to the other to get almost half way up before dismounting and pushing the rest. At the top we took the short cut along the twichell (walkway) along to I think Lacelles (spelling) avenue, then left on to Westdale and up to Mapperley tops. We could make it home in about 15 mins flat. Then back again with about 5 mins to spare before the bell went. Only problem was when he weath
  14. Congratulations too. Since I retired I cannot believe how I ever had time for work ! Secret is be active and stay active . I love retirement. Would love it even more if not for "mr arthritis"
  15. Am I dreaming or did there used to be a shoe shop (somewhere around Kings Walk) I think, my mum used to take me for new school shoes and I'm sure they had some sort of machine where you placed your feet in the bottom whilst standing and you could see like an x-ray image of the fitment ? Don't know if I'm having a seniors moment or not. Might have been Clarkes shoes, but not sure.
  16. The motor built into the wheel was a Cyclemaster. My dad had one ! Just googled it and there are heaps of images but could not copy any to post for some reason.
  17. I got invited to a shoot at the brewery in Kimberley, there was a range underneath for employees. It was like long tunnels from memory as I only went a few times as it was a fair run for me living in Carlton. My forte was really "rough shooting" as it was termed, where we had permissions to shoot vermin, rabbits etc. on farmers properties. Used to love walking the fields with the dog, some times not even firing a shot ! but just being out there. Shotgun licence used to be 5 pounds, and a simple form to fill in, that was it. I still shoot occasionally, but only the odd rabbit for the pot n
  18. I started work in 63 as an apprentice electrician with Taggs of Daybrook. Made an agreement with my mum that I could pay two pounds ten shillings a week board and keep the rest. After my first week of running around like a blue ar*ed fly I got my first pay packet of two pounds fifteen shillings ! remember chucking the lot at my mum and feeling very sorry for myself, but she came in my room and gave me the lot back, as she felt so sorry for me.
  19. Yes that's the machine I mentioned, I seem to remember it was green and had Castrol on it (or in it), but cannot be sure, there was also another little machine thing that dispensed Redex upper cylinder lubricant. My dad always filled his car with the added shots of Redex additive. Used to be 1p a shot from memory ! As for the Isetta, one of my good friends in the UK had one of those, a red one, I actually did some minor body work on the front wing just before I left for Australia. Took it around the block for a spin, a weird beast it was too. My hobby, was restoring cars then, I had a M
  20. Remember Syd's garage well, used to fill up my scooter's from him, with a funny two stroke pump thing, had Castrol written on it I think. Mixture was preset before filling with a lever. My girlfriend lived down Valley road Carlton and I lived in Mapperley so it was first stop there before picking her up to go for a run. Also Greens garage at the bottom of Westdale lane, I went to school with Roger Green the son. Then became a car showroom and car hire business. Then a larger fuel station opened across the road. When Syd's closed, a friend and I looked at leasing it as a vehicle service sta

    Chris Mee

Hi Jake What a small world it is ! Do you know what ever happened to Chris's cousin Baz ? He was the engraver, but you would know that. Often wonder what happened to all the old gang, met up with Will a few times on my trips back to Nottm. Lost touch with most of the others. Yes Will and the Land Rover, we actually went to Sweden but didn't last too long as we got deported from Gothenberg ! dont ask ! so returned back to Hull on the ferry, then drove down to Dover and set off again for south of France, I got a bit homesick for my girlfriend so bailed out early, came home and ended up gettin
  22. In West Australia where I now call home, when I'm not travelling, we get a seniors card at 60 if we no longer work more than 25 hours a week. Entitles us to free travel both rail and buses after 9.30am and before 3.30pm and all weekend or bank holidays. Also get a $100 (around 65 pounds) supplement towards any glasses we may require every 2 years. Assisted dental and a few other perks I forget now. Many retail outlets also give 10% discount to card holders, McDonalds give us a free coffee or drink with any meal.
  23. Hi Suissexred Just wondered if you knew a Stuart Evans at Meridian in the 70's -80's, he was in the maintenance department. He lived in Bestwood park estate. I have been trying to locate his son, Cary, in another thread on here, he was a mate I used to work with (the son) who seems to have vanished, maybe deceased. I lost touch after emigrating to oz in the late 80's.
