  1. Remember on one of my trips home several years back, I picked up the hire car at Heathrow and fairly jet lagged, set off round the M25 to the M1 then sort of sat there in the outside lane on a 100, stopped for a coffee at one of the service areas and suddenly realised my speedo was in MPH not my normal Kilometers per hour ! When I told our son who lives and drives heaps there , he said no worries there's never any police cars now on the motorway anyway. But I know now they have these cameras timing over a distance so wouldn't get away with it now maybe. Mind IMO most seem in way too much of
  2. We never had any of our 5 kids christened, even though both my wife and I were brought up as C of E. we are not overly religious but do have our own personal beliefs. Our belief was that no child should be pressured or forced into any religious order, we decided that it should be left for them to make up their own minds when old enough to understand and do so. Now all grown up, only one, the eldest daughter, who through marriage was sequested to become roman catholic, their children are all educated at RC schools and attend the usual RC mass etc. not my choice but nothing to do with us.
  3. Was 68 four days ago ! But still 21 in my head, pity the body don't agree.
  4. Remember Maureen very well, she taught our eldest two kids to swim, at the Forum. The younger one's learned here in oz when we had our first swimming pool, the youngest clung to the steps for almost a week before gaining enough confidence to let go ! All our grandkids swim like fish, as they all have pools too. Not bragging by the way, it's just the Aussie way here, till you learn how much hassle a pool can be, then you buy a house without one :-)). I also learned to scuba dive at the Carlton forum many years ago.
  5. I've never been a fan of any type of tattoos, two of my daughters have small ones, one is on the youngests hip, out of sight, the other daughter has her own hairdressing salon, and she has a small pair of hairdressing scissors entwined with a red rose on her inner wrist. Both obtained I might add whilst they were on a girls weekend in Bali, so more than likely some alchohol came into the mix. My son is a Forest fanatic in the UK, always has been and he has a forest tattoo on his upper arm, and a British bulldog and union jack on his other upper arm, both he got whilst serving in the R Navy i
  6. I have a young grandaughter aged 8 now, but she has grown from a baby having severe asthma and allergy problems, she has been hospitalised more times than we can count and exists on steroids (prednisone) and ventolin puffers, during attacks. Her hospital file paperwork is over 2" thick I kid you not ! When it hits her she can spiral down very quickly and if left can and does end up in pediatric ICU, where even sometimes they have to intubate her till she stabilizers. My main reason to post this is she sometimes can take up to 20 puffs of ventalin via a spacer to stop the attack getting wors
  7. I recently had my annual MOT, and god willing no nasty surprises or call backs as yet fingers crossed. Had some nasty skin cancers on my hands frozen off and on a course of fluorocil cream for some others but that's getting old in the sun. Did a quick 10 day trip down the coast to have my appointments and stayed with my eldest daughter, bad decision as her 3 kids had the dreaded lurgy and now I've gone down with the worst head and chest cold I've had for must be 3 years ! bugger. Kept my good lady awake last few nights with my sniffling and coughing so I'm in the dog house currently, Oh well
  8. I love mussels cooked any which way ! I currently have about 6 tubs of NZ greenlip, pickled, some spicy vinegar some garlic spicy vinegar, simply delicious. But my favorite are chilli with heaps of garlic and white wine with crusty bread to sop up the juices. Bloody hell me mouths watering talking about it.
  9. MargieH My mums garden was amazing as the gardeners at the park used to give her heaps of plants and cuttings etc. and she had a very "green thumb". She probably did cross paths with your mum sometime maybe. In my early years in Oz I sent mum some Australian Jacaranda tree seeds in one of my letters (totally illegal but I didn't know any better then) and she succeeded in getting two small trees to survive for several years in her greenhouse, but sadly one really severe winter she lost them both.
  10. When I come back to Nottm I always take myself for a few walks through the park, watch the squirrels running around and always finish with a walk through the botanical gardens, interesting to see some of the Australian indigenous plants and shrubs in there. My old mum went there a lot and knew the gardeners well, she said it reminded her of her Australian trips to visit us and her grandkids. Lots of happy memories of the park as a kid and teenager, winter sledging, springtime, chasing girls, exploring the old railway cuts and hidden paths etc. t.hen cut back home over the old brickyard and
  11. Always remember The Wells road, as my great aunt and uncle lived down there, number 555, as a kid I used to catch a 31 bus from mapperley tops and get off outside the Metropole cinema, then walk down the hill to their house. On my return my Uncle Harry would walk me back up to the bus stop on mapperley tops again, and see me safe on the bus, always had his pipe in his mouth as I think it was an excuse to smoke as his wife hated it in the house. A kind and gentle man, whenever I smell a pipe he comes to mind. I hate smoking, but that pipe smell is different somehow. Trying to place world of
  12. Very clever lady, gone far too young ! One of my favorites was the Ricky Tomlinson scene in the Royal Family, doing the Maccarana while stripping wallpaper ! RIP Caroline Aherne
  13. Here you are guys. https://goo.gl/maps/GCuzXeEy3fp And this is mid winter here.
  14. I love my cuppa tea, but don't normally buy when out, as I can make just as good or better at home ! Wife and I enjoy a daily coffee, but we make it last up to an hour or so and just love to "people watch" as the world goes by. Currently in a lovely little coastal town on the West coast of WA, called Kalbarri and have a favorite coffee place overlooking the Indian Ocean, paradise indeed. And Carni just saw your reply, we sometimes sneak a chocolate eclair too :-))
  15. ""On another note, work on the old Gresham Hotel is nearing completion, two shop units have been created at ground level, one is already occupied and guess what: it's another 'up market' coffee shop! Is Britain overdosing on caffene? I think we must be if we're prepared to pay those sort of prices for a cup of coffee."" Here in oz too, coffee shops are a booming and very profitable business. A cup here averages around $4 (2 quid approx) actual costs per cup average around 30-40c here, then, plus all the little extras like cakes and quick turnaround food, and you have a nice little earner wit
  16. Come on then Sue, we've met at a meet up, I remembered you straight away from school, and Carni too (though I can't remember Carni's real name), so have a guess, which is moi ? Oh a clue, I had hair then. :-)) Still racking the old brain for the last few names, I do remember the girl 6th from right in front row, she had a lovely low sultry voice, when she spoke, but no name comes to mind. I keep going back to the photo as I've got it on my pc now so will keep at it.
  17. In Oz they pronounce Derby as Durrby, and maroon is maroan, I usually come back and say Oh so the Moon is a moan too !
  18. I have a vague recollection of Roger Malinski going on to Carlton Le Willows, I left in 63, and I'm fairly positive he was definitely still at Gedling then. Last evening I again racked the old brain and came up with another of the boys names, but this am it's gone again, gosh cannot believe it is 53 years ago ! Just realised that the photo must have been taken earlier in 63, because Will Gardner left early, maybe at Easter ? as he was almost a year older than me. So maybe Malinski left then as well. Sorry sue, only living in the antipodes we sleep different hours to you guys. Anothe
  19. DavidW Yes correct, David, in fact they were the "blue eyed boys" of most sports there. Amazing how a photo shakes up the memory cells, I would never have remembered hardly any of those names, but looking at the photo, they seemed to jump into my head again. Some I'm still struggling with though.
  20. Another think, middle row first girl from left Andrea Fearn, front row 4th from left Pamela Philpot, front row 5th from right, Roberts but can't remember first name. Second boy from left middle row, Ian Jennings, he was bullyed something awful for some reason, used to feel really sorry for him at the time. Top row 5th from right, the (Billy Fury lookalike) was Gerald or Gerard but again no surname.
  21. Bloody hell now that's a blast from the past, my class just before leaving, I knew Sheila, she's middle row, last girl on right next to Roy Leach, my old school mate. Then Chris Hastings, Will Gardner, I'm in there as well, Jim Welton 3rd from right back row, Peter Downes on his left, Frank Ransom 4th from left middle row, Derek Culley Middle top row, Front row second girl, Mary Marshall, Margaret Thorley, know the other faces but no more names come to me. And yes the dreaded Mr Greenwood our teacher. First boy back row Roger Malinsky I think, and last boy top row Roger Kershaw. And top row
  22. We try and watch good British tv here in Oz, as most of our local output is dross. Watching the medical documentary, 24hrs in Emergency, the other night we couldn't believe the way some of the younger generation spoke. Is it cool to try and sound like a cross between a West Indian Rasta man and god knows what , and these were white kids ! Now not being racist here, just passing an opinion but we were shocked at the way some of these idiots were talking. What hope is there for the future when this lot start breeding, shock horror, most already have !!!!!
  23. Never been a fan of any zoo ! we should do more to protect their natural environment. Wild animals should be free. As for the mother, enough said ! we see far too much of these "new age" parents who , for one reason or another, have no control over their brats whatsoever. The whole debacle is disgusting.
  24. In my late 20's I was silly enough to be "angle grinding" on a car I was restoring, I had used some goggles but pushed them up to check my work , then without thinking ground a bit more, and bang something hit me in the eye ! Off to the old eye hospital where they found I had a piece of metal filing stuck in my eye ! straight into surgery and I nearly died when they came at me with a syringe, but after a few eye drops they injected me in the corner of my eye and removed the offending metal splinter with no pain at all, just lost vision and saw a few stars, then they put a patch on, next day
  25. I worked on BT before I emigrated and we had a Paul hicking there too, he went to Gedling school,so can only assume it may be him. I know when BT got privatised lots of the guys moved into different areas of telecoms but know no more, he lived down Cavendish road somewhere, after he got married.
