  1. Why don't we set up a fund and have our own medals made.? Some folk on here have taken part in some arduous campaigns in dire circumstances these need recognising.
  2. We do not need to "remove" the monarchy as such. Let The Windsors do what they do as a wealthy family but we should decouple them from our nation's decision making; unless of course any of them choose to stand in our (so called) democratic elections. They and their kind should be consigned to our history and that can be acknowledged appropriately without spending public monies raised from taxation. The administration of the nation should concentrate on providing a healthy and safe place in which we can live with our neighbours.
  3. I married in youth, then in late 20s , then in mid 30s. All very different wonderful experiences from which I like to think I learnt things. Looking back I can see that I was a different person at each stage. Indeed I am different now to how I was in my 30s-40s.
  4. I have owned about 16 modern cars for daily use. Built and restored 11 more not really used much , sold them on to fund the next project. Latest off to auction very soon
  5. What a wonderful account of what must have been a regular journey for railway men.
  6. If you wish to sound like Liz then substitute a sounds with e sounds. It ectually works!!
  7. So interesting ! In what ways are men different to women?
  8. Rob.L I appreciate you attempt to introduce some balance to what is so often a skewed discussion in this thread. Keep it up I generally enjoy reading all contributions and having my worst fears confirmed. Not that this forum is necessarily representative ............. Were you by any chance educated at a school on Northville Street in the 50s?
  9. I moved from MS to Apple about 18months ago. Not sure if I know useful things but I have not looked back. Very good to have a Desktop, Laptop and Phone that can be configured to communicate comprehensively or partially. Initially I was a bit clunky with Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel) and Keynote ( Powerpoint) but I am no longer a wage slave needing to use these for my work so I have enjoyed the messing about to find out how to make them do the things I need. For the most part they do everything I need and the Internet usually has the answer to a question. All a lot more dough but I have had no
  10. Alpha I think we have been bought , though many of us had no idea we were for sale. Ben I think there are pitifully few shopkeepers left and those we have seem happy to sell us cheap stuff from other countries. They have right royally been messed with and done nowt about it. I suspect that this is like all the playgrounds that I grew up in and made my way in life. The code was "Might is Right" the bigger you were and the stronger the gang you grew or belonged to the more successful you were in achieving your ends. Any weakness or uncertainty and you were lost!!
  11. Ben sorry to hear that I hope he is able to keep safe. The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum lets hope that ours responds to therapy!
  12. DJ were you in the same class as Roger (Bash) Bates? I recall he was a contemporary of Rik Kenton.
  13. Yes I agree there is a threshold somewhere late 60s early 70s before which you might lay on hands and sort out a timing or mixture problem. After that date I think best left to the guys with the specialist bits of kit and the specific knowledge. I still use most of the bits and pieces I have gathered over time or in some cases made specially for vintage and veteran car diagnosis and tuning.
  14. Well we do have Guy Fawkes Night when we celebrate the antics of a Yorkshire born chap. Probably one of the very few to have entered the Houses of Parliament with honest intentions.
  15. 'Cause there are few English things to celebrate. We need to import events like Christmas and Halloween and Burns Night
  16. I and a few friends play at Burns Night Bashes in pubs and private parties in village halls. No bagpipes!!
  17. I remember the Troc up towards Scraptoft. We used to make forays into Leicester where there was a good mod scene initially at The Burlesque on Humberstone Rd and then at the Niteowl somewhere in the centre. Great times!
  18. I did not say that its sole purpose was to maintain the monarchy. I said, Our Governance "It is arcane and based on preserving a now several hundred year old monarchic meritocracy" Your helpful comments on democracy are interesting thank you.
  19. Brew , I thought it was a serious point. There are times when I am sarcastic, ironic and attempting satire. Over something as obviously inappropriate as our system of governance I am straight down the line. It is arcane and based on preserving a now several hundred year old monarchic meritocracy , it is not a democratic system formulated to achieve the best outcomes for the majority of the population. We should not be surprised when things do not happen as well as they might!
  20. it beats me why we seem to accept that a country can be well run for all its people using systems and protocols evolved centuries ago designed to keep a King/Queen and their hangers on as rich as possible.
