  1. Thinking of freezing points 0 deg C = 32 deg F. The 32 made me think about this Tuesdays resting heart rate which was 32! OK, after decades of training I have an athletes heart rate which is usually in the low 40's when rested but 32 was a bit worrying. No symptoms of heart probs so carrying on as normal.
  2. Decades ago i read a SF book about a space exploration that went wrong when the computer failed. They eventually got home by making several abacus boards and working as a team, they were able to compute and plot a successful course. So maybe the centuries old abacus was the first computer?.
  3. Yep - we all had Bert Weedon's book. Learnt a few chords but changed to G banjo. Was that a Hoffner guitar?
  4. I forgot to mention the soft water tank that is under the driveway, just outside the kitchen window. This is a solid stone chamber 3' x 6' x 5' high with brick vaulted roof. This was used to collect rainwater for washing because the well water was so hard.
  5. We still have things in the house that you don't see any more. Wooden door latches. Huge padlock with front door key that you could club a burglar with. Pantry with brick thralls. Meat hooks on the dining room beams. Herringbone wood block floor in front room. Quarry tiles on tar and sand in dining room and pantry (not the slightest hint of damp). A pair of wooden pincers (were mam's) hanging behind the laundry door, Stone door weights, scythe stones, bits of clay pipes and hobbing irons littered about outside. A well with pump. Open cast iron fire places in bedrooms and sitting room. We did h
  6. #88 I was into the 'Italian' style then - you know - short jackets and winkle pickers. That period followed my short lived drape and brothel creeper year. I ended up as a duffle coat and college scarf type before I (nearly) grew up.
  7. How uncouth! A precisely aimed winkle picker was far more effective Reminds me of the pair of expensive, cool sued winkle picker shoes I once had. Didn't last long. Woke up one morning after a heavy night on the town, reached under the bed for the po, only to discover that I had used one of my prized winkle pickers during the night instead! Emptied temporary po and put it on top of the boiler to dry. Phew!! Eye watering reek!. The dried shoe ended up as hard as a pot out of the kiln and had a salty tide mark and texture.
  8. Filmed after changing out of he tracksuit and trainers....lol Joking apart Benj - I agree about the 20's fashion. I still have some finely tailored suits for when the occasion arises. When going out I wear a tweed jacket and trilby during the cooler weather, or a lightweight tailored suit or jacket and Panama in Summer. Oh! and proper shoes
  9. Mrs PP drives an 8 y/o VW Touran. Like most small 7 seaters it is boring BUT it is brilliant in every other way. Spacious, economical and good to drive. A quality vehicle.
  10. Crocs mean healthy feet. I wear them most of the time - not yellow ones though 6 months or more of the year = crocs with no socks when gardening or some other leisure times. I am chastised for wearing crocs and shorts while chainsawing, stone wall building and climbing trees - but hey! - at least I'm not wearing tracksuit and trainers!
  11. Welcome cazann - and yes, your posts have been read - sometimes twice I was at Berridge seniors 48/53 so a bit before your time.
  12. Eric Biddulph known by Nottingham cyclists as 'Duke' had a fascinating book published in 2007. The first chapters cover his early life and recollections about Nottingham in the 40's to 60's. The book 'The First 70 Years' was published a year before he died in Huddersfield in 2008 (a week after we lunched together). Eric worked in various places in Nottingham in accounting and finally at the Midland bank at the top of Peveril St. Eric's dad was a bus driver with NCT 1932 - 1974. Although Eric was brought up in the Berridge Rd area he attended the Claremont School. He went on to become lecturer
  13. I am wearing a track suit at the moment while taking a break during a long rowing session. The worst tracksuit wearers, in my opinion are not the young chav's, but the middle aged, unfit, lazy scruffs. They have had time to sort out their self esteem issues, so no excuses. Just lazy, lazy, lazy! Pees me off.
  14. A couple of generations ago the only people that wore track suits and trainers were footballers or athletes ..........! These days it has become a normal mode of dress. I OCCASIONALLY see someone that looks really good and cool in tracksuit and trainers. But the other 95%... oh dear!
  15. #467 I assume that yours is a tadpole trike then Plantfit? It made me realise that the mk2 'village cruiser' could be tested and developed on my turbo. (Mk1 shown in avatar) #469 darkazana - would like a walk in Clumber Park.
  16. I'm into the 10th day of the Concept2 January Challenge on the indoor rower. Averaging 20km a day. Wonder how a pedometer would work on the rowing machine at an average of 24spm? Would it record 48 spm? That would still be a tad slower than walking. Right - got to do another 10km before going to the pub
  17. Well!! In my ignorance I've been mowing field Blewitts up in France for years and just leaving the woodland variety alone
  18. Why is the EA exempt from the Freedom of Information act?
  19. Email from agent yesterday. Replacement part £120. Service £435. .............and that was for my wrist watch!!!
  20. Bought wife a new car when I retired 11 years ago. It depreciated by £18k after 3 years. The most I've paid for a car since then is £3k. Current car £2.5k and taken me to France and back 5 times and a pleasure to drive. Can't see any reason for getting anything better. If a big bill looms at mot time I'll just buy another cheap car with a full mot. I had a £3k car for 8 years and only spent a few hundred on it; then it was nicked.2 years ago, otherwise I would still be driving it. .
  21. Why do people buy new cars? What's wrong with a decent 2nd hand one?
  22. Diet has far more effect on weight than exercise. Going to the gym will make little difference unless it is accompanied by cutting down on calories. Exercise is mainly for health and fitness. Oddly, some overweight looking people are quite healthy and fit due to exercise. And even more odd - some slim looking people carry hidden fat in their muscles and viscera and are very unfit. So appearances can be deceptive. As wartime and post war kids we were no better disciplined than today's kids when it comes to food and drink. All kids eat and drink what is put in front of them and what is readily
  23. No chance now FLY2. I'm in my 78th year and it has not worked for me.
