  1. I studied Latin for two, maybe three years at school. In those days certain medical schools required an O level in Latin for entry. I’ve found it useful in doing crosswords, legal terminology and reading ancient tombstones in churches. The Shorter Latin Primer was the key book and I believe it’s still in use today.
  2. There’s more to these ancient therapies than conventional science would have us believe. Nothing should be dismissed out of hand. It does work for some people when normal medicine does not seem to work.
  3. I bet the ladies in Bulwell say ‘eh up randy’ to you - but for a different reason!
  4. It’s a treatment you’ve got to have faith in. There’s no scientific evidence for it’s efficacy but as an old doctor friend used to say to me - ‘if it works!’
  5. I have read it. I believe Castle Bromwich was, or became the Standard car factory. I went round there once when they used to build Massey Ferguson tractors.
  6. As I recollect the main runway at Old Warden, 04/22, was relatively short and was grass (not paved) which required a longer takeoff run. Although it was easy enough to fly into the takeoff required planning. I remember going in with a Cherokee, PA28 with a full load of 4 adults but only half tanks. To ensure we got out safely we taxied to the end of the runway, turned round and then we all got out to push the aircraft as far back as possible. The tail was almost in the hedge! We climbed back in, held it on the brakes at maximum revs and then shot forward giving it two stages of flaps as we got
  7. It may have been a recent plate swap.
  8. A check reveals that as aToyota GT86. Not much rear seat room in that would mean not much fun!
  9. I believe that a Mitchell’s director was either on the ‘watch committee’ which controlled the City Police or he was a councillor. I wonder if that explained the use of Triumph vehicles in the force? Incidently RA was a Derbyshire registration.
  10. That was Mitchell Farm Services, part of the same group. They were at Basford on the opposite side of the tracks to Vernon Rd. They also had a place at Etwall, just past Derby. I think they were Massey Ferguson dealer’s.
  11. I’ve flown into Old Warden many times plus lots of visits by road. You always used to get a strict briefing from air traffic before departure about ‘no showing off’. I used to keep the aircraft on the runway for as long as possible and haul it off at the last minute before we went through the hedge! I live to tell the tale.
  12. Agreed. There's too much frivolity on this site. It should be banned. Where are the banning moderators?
  13. OK. I’ll kick it off. I propose Nonna!
  14. I drove down the old A46 near to the main gate last week but it doesn’t go past the gate. You could get up closer on a bike. There’s no serious security.
  15. Don’t know Rog. It’s been years since I’ve set foot on the airfield.
  16. I've not bought one yet. Just briefly looking at the new rules regarding flying distances from airports I've not yet discovered how an 'airport' is defined. I live across the River Trent from RAF Syerston within the 3 mile airfield boundary. It is primarily an active gliding establishment but military exercises do take place from time to time, usually with low flying helicopters. Even the Red Arrows give a 'private' annual show there. The field is substantially higher than us so there is never any chance of collision but it only takes someone to inform on you to invite trouble. I've got to stu
  17. Went into administration in 2005.
  18. When I used to travel on business many years ago, before satnav, I used to stop at a newsagent’s on the outskirts of the town and buy an A to Z. I still have have a cupboard full of them ranging from Accrington to Yeovil!
  19. ......or their heads are in the sand!
  20. Well said Fly. We have the situation where the site has become virtually monopolised and the regular members have become brassed off with it. It would seem that this problem is not being addressed by whoever is running the show.
  21. Someone I knew who went round the factory said they just pushed the pig carcass into the mincer and it came out as the finished product. Nothing wasted!
  22. Yes it was the alternator. 3 trips on the back of an AA truck confirmed it.
  23. It is if the operator is sufficiently intelligent to interpret it
