  1. We are getting a lot of automated (robo) calls from political parties asking what we think about the recent budget. It appears that the AI robot does not understand ("F*** Off) as it keeps calling back.
  2. Compo There are several episodes on YouTube, after I remembered the name I checked to see if it was right.
  3. Compo, Was that The Forest Rangers? it was a bit like a Canadian version of "Skippy the bush kangaroo"
  4. Ian, In the 60's and 70's the Blue Bell on Mansfield Rd was my favourite pub in Sutton in Ashfield for the following reasons. It was then a Mansfield house, it was not far from work and it had a bar billiards table something you don't see in many pubs today.
  5. "Where There's Muck There's Brass" the theme for that excellent documentary series on Fred Dibnah and a TV sitcom
  6. Commo, The only pub I can remember near there was the Cart Horse Inn, now the Scruffy Dog on the other side of the crossing on Station Road
  7. I finished there in 1972, we did one full day 9:00am to 9:00pm and then two nights 6:00 to 9:00pm for 4 years, a 6 year course compressed into 4 years. I used to enjoy technical drawing, I was particularly good at developing shapes for sheet metal working and calculating stress, strain and redundancy is support structures, like many things, never used them since.
  8. You comment made me look up 3D movies on Wiki and the first public showing was in September 1922 and they too used the red/green format in the dual film strip. You are quite right the "golden era" for 3D movies was between 1952 - 1954 The red/green glasses were called anaglyph glasses. It is quite an interesting article and you never stop learning. I went to see one of the Star Wars movies in 3D, fantastic..
  9. No Ian, I went to the Tech at the Junction of Nottingham Rd and Derby Rd opposite the Crematorium and Cemetery, just up from The Rushley
  10. Catfan, Just read your post above and thought bl**dy heck 3D movies in 1960, that was a bit advanced then I realised that you meant threepence. it amazing how technology warps your thinking.
  11. Commo, The pub near the railway crossing on Newark Rd is called The Junction, it was previously called the Cardinal. However, there used to be a Railway Inn on High Pavement but I think it is a Chinese restaurant now. Remember the Rushley well it was two pints and a pie or pasty during lunch time when as an apprentice I was on day release at West Notts Tech just up the road.
  12. Yes Ian there was a Railway Hotel in Kirkby on Urban Road, Alas long gone, now an Aldi Great memories in those pictures, I had my first Sunday lunchtime pint in the Staff after attending a St John's First Aid training course as an apprentice. It was on the corner of Church St and West End, if I remember correctly the Rifleman was on Low Street
  13. I am disappointed that they did not reach the final after all they have had a good season which is more than can be said for the other Nottingham team. Having said that I am not a fan of the play off method, if you finish in a promotion spot you get promoted, it does not seem fair that one bad game could potentially lose you that promotion. Notts did not finish in the top four so justice was probably done. Same goes for a relegation spot but in reverse.
  14. Ian, if that photo was taken in 1964 it must have been shortly before the line was closed under the Beeching axe. I used to catch my local bus near the station and it has not had a roof for many a year. The Great Central station in Mansfield always fascinated me as a kid as you used to have to climb stairs to get up to the platforms as the track bed was on an embankment that took it over the bridge on Ratcliffe Gate the old A617 to Newark Here is a very clever image by Neil Pledger a heritage photographer part of his excellent Footprints of Mansfield series where he superimposes
  15. The TC/MKIII Cortina was produced down under with imported four cylinder engines and local straight sixes of 3.3 and 4.1 litre capacity You can pick one up here for between $5,000 and $10,000 or 2,800 - 5500 quid
  16. One quarter inch elastic, didn't half pack a punch, marbles, ball bearings or pebbles made great ammo.
  17. Yes Loppy they were made by Bush, the logo, if that is what they were called then looked like a Christmas tree in a pot. Most of the time it only showed the test card but I still remember Watch With Mother
  18. Black and white like this one at my grandparents in the 50's The first colour television was just before the 1970 world cup. It was in a cabinet with a doors as my mum did not like the "one eyed monster" staring at her when it was not on.
  19. Bl**dy ridiculous 4 out of the 5 main free to air channels in Australia are broadcasting the Royal Wedding. I hope they get it over with on time so we can watch the Cup Final, far more important than any royal event.
  20. Can someone explain to me how Australia gets a gig at this stupid event? We are about as far away from Europe as you can get.
  21. Great post, that is a real early one with Jet Harris on bass and Tony Meehan on drums. Who can forget this one
  22. My first SLR camera was a Zenit EM with the Praktica 42 mm x 1 mm pitch thread for the interchangeable lenses. Built like a brick outhouse and the mirror made a satisfying clunk not unlike the shutting of a car door. It got years of use and abuse and I only threw away some of the doubler lens spacers last year during a clear out.
