  1. Goose Fair for me was more about the sounds and the smells rather than the rides The sound and oily smells coming from the diesel generators that powered the rides and the lights. The sounds of Johnny and the Hurricanes Red River Valley and Rockin' Goose belting out from the speakers on the Waltzer. The aroma of the onions for the hot dogs, the smell of vinegar on cockles and mint sauce on mushy peas, the sweet smell of candy floss and brandy snaps. Is it still like that? or have tastes and technology moved on.
  2. I agree Ayup' being all manual has stood me in good stead even in the digital age. BK I had extension rings for macro photography and also 2x and 3x conversion rings that doubled or tripled the focal length of the lens. All in all a great beginners camera, rugged, reliable camera with excellent optics that took good photos at a reasonable price.
  3. I had a Zenith E in the mid seventies too. I had it when we came to OZ, the built in light meter went to places it had never seen in the UK. If I remember correctly it had Pentax screw mounts on the lenses. I also had a 1000mm folded light telephoto lens with a pistol grip mount. They were built like brick sh*t houses and the mirror operated with a satisfying clunk. I used it to take surfing shots with 1000ASA film which I developed and printed myself. I had over 4000 Kodak Ektachrome slides which I developed myself too and recently I went through and culled them, scanned the rest an
  4. I do, no better biscuit for dunking. The worst thing about those biscuits that disintegrate when they are dunked is having half a gloopy biscuit in the bottom of your tea or coffee.
  5. Just a couple of comments re biscuits. Did you know that most of the decorated biscuits tins were made in Nottinghamshire by Metal Box Co of the Valley in Mansfield. How many of you have tried the great Aussie tradition of the TIM TAM Slam? The Tim Tam is a chocolate covered biscuit that is similar to a Penguin biscuit. It has two layers of biscuit separated by a cream like filling and covered in chocolate. You dunk them in your coffee and suck the coffee up through the biscuit filling.
  6. For any lovers of classic and vintage cars if you look at YT after this weekend you will see coverage of The Bay to Birdwood historic vehicle run from a beachside suburb to the west of the Adelaide CBD to Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills, the home of the National Motor Museum. The route is 70 km and includes a climb from the coastal plains up into the hills. It is the biggest event of its type in the world and there will be around 1700 vehicles taking part this year. The event alternates between classic and veteran vehicles, this year it is the turn of the classics, manufactured betwe

  8. Come on, own up, all those that can't listen to the William Tell overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger. Jay Silverheels who played Tonto in the TV series was a Mohawk from an Indian reserve in Ontario Canada. Hence the Lone Ranger telling Him to "Get to Toronto, pronto Tonto" After years of loyal service in an unaired episode The Lone Ranger shot Tonto with a silver bullet, apparently he found out that Kemosabe meant t**t in Mohawk
  9. If you ever get downunder there is a fantastic light. laser and sound effects show at Sovereign Hill commemorating the battle between the gold miners and the government forces on December 3rd 1854 during which some 27 people were killed. The show is called Blood on the Southern Cross. You can see an excerpt here. Sovereign Hill is a re-creation of a gold mining town and can be seen in the clip immediately after.
  10. Here is a link which contains a potted history of the hospital http://www.ournottinghamshire.org.uk/page/30th_general_hospital_of_the_university_of_california?path=0p2p55p It is just off the A38 (the longest 2 digit A road in the UK) opposite Kings Mill Reservoir on the Mansfield side of Sutton in Ashfield.
  11. Ajax worked just as well. They sell a brand of hand cleaning soap here called Solvol, similar to what we used to call "sand soap" which back in the day I think used to work by taking then first layer of skin off along with the dirt. I always found that a liberal application of barrier cream helped the dirt come off much easier and helped prevent contact dermatitis from the "suds" that was used in machining metals in those days.
  12. Welcome to the ever growing band of Nottstalgians down under Mary. Where are you in our wide brown land? If I remember correctly Mayfair Avenue ran off Windsor Road which had a great view of Mansfield over the quarry, which is now houses. The Reindeer and the Oak Tree, both on Southwell Rd West were watering holes of mine in the past.
  13. The mainstream media in OZ are bleating like lost lambs about the result, saying that Stokes was obviously out LBW, and how could the umpire not raise his finger. Yes, with the benefit of technology he was out but the umpire gave his decision quickly and I guess he might have heard something that he thought was bat on ball. If the Aussies had not wasted a review on something that was equally obviously not out the result would have been different, but it wasn't. They now want the DRS (Decision Review System) changed because they say that the "upstairs" umpire should have intervened and given St

  15. AMAZING WIN It is 12:45 am here and I probably wont be able to go to sleep for ages. On the edge of my seat for the last 2 hours.
  16. Ben, don't forget that famous female Aussie fast bowler...…….. Lillian Thompson
  17. Ben, I was lucky enough to see Derek Randall's innings in the Centenerary test the first year we came to Oz My first pick in the team would be Larwood to give 'em a bit of chin music. Then Boycott to make them earn their wickets not give them away Just seen the England "batting coach" interviewed on TV, he still thinks England can win! After that performance I wonder why he still has a job.
  18. England's batsmen would struggle to get runs against a local colliery welfare team Absolute rubbish batting. Hanging the bat out to dry and very little feet movement. who coaches this lot, don't even have to hit most of the balls they have been out to. Bring back Geoff Boycott
  19. I see that Greene King is being sold to a Hong Kong gazillionaire for 2.7 billion pounds. If memory serves me correctly don't they brew Hardy and Hansons, the old Kimberley beers
  20. Thanks notty ash, knew it was an Escort but the Chrysler Alpine was after my time in Notts so I did not recognise it
  21. Phil, Some other puns from the site are :- "So he went off half-cocked?" -J.Petry "After this he will be definitely shooting blanks." -I.Titi "His barrel was shortened that day." -A.Yuan "Friends call him 'snubnose' now." "He's not half the man he used to be." -D.Webb "Clean up on Aisle 4." -M.Miller
  22. This one from the Darwin Awards website definitely could not pass his genes on (27 Nov 2018, Arizona) The Buckeye Police Department reports that a man accidentally shot his own sausage while shopping in the meat aisle at Walmart. Arizona law does not require a permit (nor a holster for that matter) to carry a firearm, so our hero felt free to carry his piece "commando-style" (unholstered) beneath his waistband. When the unholstered gun drifted down into his jeans, he reached in and pulled the trigger while repositioning his weapon. This loose cannon's low hanging fruit didn’t have a chanc
