  1. In most of the photos of old Nottingham most of the roads have the old stone sets, there must have been millions of them. All now seem to have been covered over, where did they come from and how did they make so many. There must have been a major enterprise to make so many with the equipment available at that time. The use of these for drives and patios I wonder how many disappeared when road maintenance was undertaken.
  2. Thanks Ian that's the one ,I can remember buying a year old Viva from there. We went in it to San Palais sur Mer near Royan camping in 1976, all the way there and back with a home made extra large roof rack and all overloaded. When we arrived back in Plymouth the red hot summer had arrived and the car started over heating, the only way to continue was all the windows open and heater on full. Its a long way back to Hucknall like that with 2 travel sick kids in the back complaining.
  3. Can you remember your first telephone number, mine was Hucknall 6656 ,to contact home from Nottingham I think it was 35 before the number, the national code for Nottingham was 0602 .
  4. Each to their own, freedom of choice etc. But for me family comes before a vodka and tonic.
  5. Best tonic in the world , spending relaxation time with family.
  6. Great post again DJ ,memories of Bestwood Estate , I imagine this type of activity happened in most areas but it brings it back to me my childhood of Bestwood. My older Brother and his mates use to do this as well , my place in life was to be at least ten paces behind them as they didn't want to be associated with little kids like me. We also went onto Southglade fields and climbed up the bank to Rigleys to set them off so that the rockets would fly higher, I think the majority of the time they fell to the ground further. Keep them memories coming.
  7. Your right Ben Hucknall is now a dormitory Town, the long term residents don't like it but its a fact they have to get use to. More and more housing is being built with no thought to road links, I am sure you know the problems in rush hour. At one time whatever you wanted you could buy in Hucknall but not now. It is like many other town centres , shops are closing and choice is very limited, but on the upside restaurants and cafes are opening up, no more coffee bars like we knew though.
  8. I have to admit Ben Bulwell has many fond memories for me and will always have a special place in my heart.
  9. Here is a picture for you jonab it is now a pleasure to walk down the High Street. Plenty of room, no vehicles, no nasty fumes and a delight to sit outside of one of the many cafes with a coffee. Also many more people are using the Town centre now. Best thing to Happen to Hucknall for decades.
  10. Stephen S I only have a vague memory of this area you have rekindle them with your postings, thanks for that. Please keep posting that's what Nottstagia Forum is for.
  11. DJ360 since Uckna High Street has been pedestrianised it is just like being on holiday with the recent weather. Sitting outside, in the sun, at a café having a coffee, trying to understand what the locals are talking about as they walk past. Picking fault with everything about them and wondering why they cant be like us. LOL
  12. I lived in Uckna 52years and as ard as I try still cant speek it propa, kno wen wif wonts summat it starts wiv givus.
  13. Seagulls on the roof it reminds me when I went to Spain with 2 other families and we stopped in mobile homes ,every night two of us threw bread on the thirds roof. Each morning he was complaining of the birds with pit boots on his roof waking him up. We only told him about it on the flight home, he wasn't impressed.
  14. Briyeo you coloured it for a bit of fun, well the quality of your work is fantastic , you have brought the photo to life, well done.
  15. Ayup Kev another Bestwood boy here, never went to Padstow but had the pleasure of going to Whipple, keep on posting your welcome here.
  16. I have noticed that this years despite the drought all the fruit trees have cropped extremely well and an enormous amount of growth as well, I thought the opposite would happen. Perhaps we have a gardener on the forum who knows why.
  17. MargieH you recently had an apple tree fall over, well this morning I had the same happen to me ,too much fruit on it, I knew should have taken some off. But I am lucky where yours had memories mine is only been in for two years. I was surprised when so much of the fruit set ,I expected to lose most of it in the June drop but lost very little, so it serves me right for being lazy.
  18. Just been into wethers in Bulwell first time ever, It was great to walk around Bulwell again ,love the place. I met Ben in wethers thought it was time as we are both Bestwood boys, I can confirm all the stories about him are true everybody seems to know him. Had a very interesting chat with him found him to be a very nice bloke. He has a few problems at the present but with his character I know he will overcome them, and I look forward to seeing him again at meet ups.
  19. I had a visit to Pork Farms factory in Beeston , they didn't waste anything, my love for sausages and pork pies waned for a short while.
  20. Commo I have to admit I had to look up the word "dreich" , a really appropriate word for that day.
  21. Ben, please not "full throttle" they need a rest as well as you.
  22. Can anyone remember a Vauxhall dealer who had premises on the Valley Road and Scotland Road area of Basford. I thought there was one there in the early 70s, but I cannot find any sign of one.
  23. Remember the chip shop well ,came out of the pub opposite side of the road , the down to catch the 43 or 44 home. O the joys of youth, but I cannot remember the name of the pub, joys of age.
