  1. the maps of BH station ,thanks for posting them. I tried to copy one and but it wouldn't load on to postimage as it was the wrong file type, still trying to change it. So far complete failure, as I was once told by a senior officer he couldn't work out if I was the most determined person he knew or the most stubborn pig headed "person" he ever had the misfortune to know.
  2. I can remember Trinity Church before it was demolished and thought it was an imposing building even then. A few years ago I brought a MGB roadster from Sherwood Restorations, the cars are a bit expensive but they are of good quality and the service from the garage is second to none. The wife said I was going through a midlife crisis, my son and grandson called me a born again boy racer as I loved getting the back end sliding around traffic islands. I had to sell it in the end as the only way I could get out of it was open the door and roll out onto the ground , then haul myself onto my f
  3. jonab looking at old maps is something that appeals to me ,in fact that is how I first found nottstalgia. We do have on this forum the residential expert Cliff ton, he can magic up maps of places demolished years ago and throw in a photograph for good measure. I am sure you will have an interesting time searching that site. There are many others that can produce great photos as well.
  4. Butlers Hill Station is situated between the Leen valley line of the GNR and the Nottingham Mansfield line of the MR. IAN123 photo shows the area just North of the station, sorry I cant be more helpful but I am unable to put them on postimage due to the file type.
  5. I have tried to upload the images to postimage but I am unable to do this as it will not recognise the file type and I don't know how to change this. What you can do is go to the site https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/ there you will find a list of maps , choose the 1915 map and search for Hucknall. This site has maps going back to 1895 and you can look and see how different areas have changed over the years. If anybody can help me on how you can change the file type so I am able to store maps on postimage I appreciate it.
  6. If you look on the 1915 map of Hucknall you will see a train station "Butlers Hill", I am unsure if this area was classed as part of Hucknall as it is now. Whilst looking at that map I found that Linby a small little village was serviced by 2 train stations.
  7. Condolences to his wife and family I never met the man, his post were very interesting on a wide variety of subjects and he will be missed by members of Nottstalgia.
  8. Thanks for that Terry I just could not think of the name , my brain must have misfired as that is the name of the road it is on.
  9. I spent too much time in Red Lion ,then down to what is now Lion revived, I don't remember the previous name, sold Taddys brown ale then in the back room of Billy with Ted as the landlord. Cross the road to Oak and end up in Monkey or Scotts Greys. Just recalled another shop on Main street junction with Highbury Vale Roses the shoe shop, amazing what memories a few old photos bring back.
  10. Atlas spares on Park Lane they helped me to keep my cars on the road, they always seemed to have a good assortment in there.
  11. In Bulwell speak if caught by Ben or one of his mates the reply is " Din Du Nuffin"
  12. A great reminder of shops in times gone Pounders, McCarthys and Chambers the butchers, I can recall going in there with my mother for meat also an older sister and B in L worked there. Bulwell was the main place to shop other than the co-op for people on Bestwood Estate. Bulwell had a great variety of shops and a market and was walking distance from Bestwood.
  13. Ben after reading some of you posts I don't think you will end up alone for long. With your gift of the gab you will have a queue waiting for you, so you WILL end up with someone whether you want to or not.
  14. You hope the pictures have been of interest. To me yes, all the pictures on nottstalgia I find of great interest and enjoyment, I must make the effort to go to one of these shows. I thank all the people on this site for taking the time and effort to post photos.
  15. Jill I think its great you have found your place in life and are able to pursue what you enjoy. I am not particularly fond of labels such as happy and miserable , I think contented is more appropriate, if more people could reach that stage a more pleasant world we would have. Like you I am disappointed in the way the world is taking us and the way some people behave, but there is no way we can change every thing to the way we want. So like you I find it is better sometimes to retreat away and do my own thing.
  16. I like to be happy, in fact very happy in the company of miserable people as it increases the misery for them, something which I find very pleasurable. Just a thought on that, if being happy to make others miserable is it the signs of me being a miserable old sod, so am I a happy person or a miserable old sod. I am so confused on what I am, can anybody tell me. Remember your answer will determine if you are a happy person or a miserable old sod.
  17. I am old, so I should be miserable and an moaning old sod, but I am happy, so should I go and see a counsellor to try and make me miserable, advice please.
  18. affergorritt I know exactly what you mean, talking with a mate last week we were talking about a pal whose funeral we "recently" attended, and we were trying to remember what date he passed away. We were both shocked to find out that it was just over 5 years. Where did the years go , don't they go fast. My grandson who I use to hold in one hand now towers above me and has been known to pick me up and carry me, begging him to stop I get well you used to carry me so its only right I return the favour.
  19. Great photos IAN123, in black and white that's how I remember it all, thanks for publishing them.
  20. NBL I know the problem with Herons , here in Hucknall we use to have one visiting most days , in the end I had to put a fence around the pond with strings of wire above it. I thought that solved the problem ,until one day the wife said look at that beautiful bird with something orange in its beak , I looked and said to her that's a kingfisher with one of the small fishes in its beak. I wont tell you what she said but it was no longer a beautiful bird. We had to alter the pond yet again and it seems we have solved the problem , we were fed up of buying fish just to feed birds.
  21. IAN123 the like was for remembering and going to Brian Jones grave.
  22. The buildings don't want demolishing they are ripe for improvement, if they were modernised with all facilities inside they would make better homes and better community than the latest "town houses". They were built with more style than the ones now. I must agree that it is a great photograph, thanks for putting it on.
  23. Age is just an irrelevant number, my body feels like a 90 year old with new bits added that don't work well, but I am still told to grow up. Having children young has many advantages ,you grow up with them, I used to go out with the youngest for a drink and tried to convince others we were brothers, often we would arrive home still laughing to sit through a lecture from the wife on responsibilities. The F in L couldn't believe his luck when the eldest was in the sixth form they used to go on a Thursday evening to play snooker together and then for a couple of drinks, I wasn't supposed to know
  24. Thanks you two I was feeling a bit down now you have really done it, my boy , as I still call him is fifty this year and grandson on a quick visit from uni has gently reminded me he is twenty one next month. I must get my wheelchair serviced next week.
  25. I have received a pm from benjamin 45 it seems he has been "right badly" for a while , so I am sure others will be wishing him well and looking forward to hear more of his life stories, well the ones he can put on this forum.
