When we lived on Denton street, off Denman street, we had two rooms downstairs, front room and back room which opened out to a large communal yard. In the back room we had a scullery which was about the size of a phone booth. It had shelves in there and a sandstone shallow sink. Interestingly, there was no tap ! Next to that was the stairs which were very steep. Then another door that had the coal place under the stairs. Our bath hung outside on a nail and was shared by neighbours? Said before,"Not brought up but dragged up".

And why has nobody removed that scrapped cycle frame? Or is that considered art too?

Last year, when I was minibus driving for St. Georges village, near Ditchling, part of care home side is run by nuns. There are some very elderly, retired nuns who live there and are now cared for themselves. Used to take some of the younger and more active sisters on trips out, visiting/shopping etc., along with village residents. The nuns used to enjoy a bit of banter and occasional clean joke. A great gang. Used to take Richard Osmans mum out too.

I can remember when we lived in Nottingham, our gp surgery was the Mary Potter health Centre, on Gregory blvd., one of the nurses there was a nun. Can't recall her name but she was referred to as 'Sister', she was a lovely lady and always had time to talk to you. She still hurt though, with the flu jabs.

Unless one particularly asks for bottled coke they usually serve it from a syphon, a bit like soda stream. The cola comes in syrup form.

This one won't eat a lot either, just an occasional side of beef !

A brilliant read N A., I've just spent well over an hour digesting it and drooling over the pictures. Parts of it, as in #43 I can remember walking along that stretch of towpath, (not 1920 of course) also the area around lock 6, which was where Wollaton Road Bridge is. It all came flooding back. As 12/13yr olds, we used walk up the towpath toward Wollaton colliery where we used to swim in the outfall of warm water ran into the canal. It was known as the 'Ottis for some reason. Many thanks for the post and blast from the past.
