The junction of Bentinck Road/Hartley Road and Alfreton Road used to be known as Ation corner because of the pub (ruination), Bentinck Road school (education) and St. Michael's Church (salvation). I can't remember what was on the 4th corner.

This is mentioned elsewhere on this forum, I thought it was known as Ation corner. Ruination, education, salvation and degradation. -
Can you remember 'Ation Corner'? Radford Blvd/Ilkeston Road Junction. Named because of the four establishments on each corner. Public House 'Damnation' Church 'Salvation' Friends School 'Education' <_< And the Butchers on the other corner, I can't remember the 'ation' for that unless it was owned by a Mr.Singh?

Thanks for the missing link Den and Oldace, bin buggin me fer years. School - Education Church - Salvation Pub - Damnation. Pawn shop - Ruination. I never knew the Pawn shop being there, or never noticed it when I lived there, early 60s. It was later a butchers, which I could never think of an 'ation' for?

Ation Corner Heard a story once that the junction of Ilkeston road and Radford Boulevard was called Ation Corner because on each corner was a Pub, a Church, a School and a Pawn Broker. The Pub was Ruination, The School Education, The Church Salvation but can't remember what the pawn broker was. Can any one help. Last time i passed the Pawn broker was turned into a Butchers.

Nothing to do with meat or travel, when it all started the butchers shop was a pawn shop owned by a Jewish person and it made the third 'ation, Ruination. When this establishment moved he went into the pot shop mentioned in another posting. This was Simmons pot shop on the corner of the Boulevard and Denman Street. Somewhere in this area was Linneys paper shop too. A crazy crazy NB I have consulted the oracle on this...
