      Hi

For technical reasons I can't add a new category in the list of areas (although I wish I could).

However there are quite a few old threads which cover Netherfield.

  5. I see Victoria Retail Park Netherfield is to have a m@S Food Hall . I just love thier selection of food. For anyone who hasn't got a lot of time or ability to prepare meals from scratch, you can get some delicious ready meals. We treat ourselves sometimes to the 'Tika Masala', highly recommend, but also every day meals are of good quality. A bit expensive so we just shop there as a treat. I shall definately be calling in to check it out next visit to Gedling. I would think there will be Employment prospects taking on new staff as well. Gotta be good!
  6. We took my sis and bil to East Bridgeford on Thursday via the ring road from the MI and through Ratcliff village. We decided to return via Gunthorpe, Burton Joyce, Netherfield, Carlton and then head for Derby. I used to live on Park Rd., Carlton, so I thought I knew the area quite well. Well, it's over 20 years since we used that road and we got suspicious about changes when we missed the Pub in Burton Joyce (was it the Admiral Rodney?) and somehow missed Netherfield and Carlton completely. I was lost until Colwick woods were spotted, then the Notts County ground. Bleddy ell, it's changed a bi
  7. Exactly what the title says. Such a shame really as the current people have really turned it around, Iv been their Ann summers girl for ladies night and despite the negative. Comments people have had about the place because of its rep, I liked it! What a shame to turn something with much history to flats... Again!
  8. Searching the 1911 census for Netherfield, I came across John Street possibly among the terraces (London North West Terrace etc). Does anyone know whereabouts this was please?
  9. Hello - I'm originally from Netherfield where I lived until I got married. I went to Ashwell Street Infants and Junior schools then at eleven went up to Carlton Girls' Secondary Modern School in1953.
  10. Digging around Picture the Past I came across this photo which shows something I'd not heard of before - a toll gate at Meadow Road, Netherfield. Looks like this today. Meadow Road was originally called Toll Bar Lane, and the gate survived until the early 20th century. Was it to keep people out, or to keep Netherfield-ites in? How much would you pay to get in to Netherfield?
  11. Mrs Parnham , mother of Derick (soss ) Parnham is 100 years old today and is in good health and still going strong but now lives in Carlton ....Happy birthday Mrs P.
  12. There used to be a printing factory on that street, there is now a cul de sac in its place, does anyone have a photo of what it looked like? There was a bakery opposite also that id like to see photos of if there is any floating about
  13. We took our little one to the park yesterday and I remember going there as a child, it looked completely different and i was trying to explain to the other half whatit was like when I was little as he's not from around these parts of the woods, he's Arnold side. Does anyone have any photos of the park I can show him? Or any other areas of netherfield that may if changed over the years. I'm fascinated with old photos of local areas as a lot of people on the forum know.
  14. Anyone seen/heard the news this morning about two carriages of a 30carriage frieght train derailed this morning at Carlton station/netherfield crossings. I haven't seen the damage but apparently it's caused a little chaos around netherfield. I did wake this morning as I do most mornings and heard the most horrid noise to find what the noise this morning. No ones been harmed, just shaken up.
  15. Does any one know at what time and why houses were demolished at the far end of Arthur Street,as i have traced my ancestors to no 45,on the 1901 census, and when i came to Notts i discovered the house number 45 gone,i know in 1911 they had moved to Marhill Road, but i don't know what happened in between,If i can find out what happened i will know why and when they moved, Was it to do with Railway as i believe he and many neighbors worked on the railway at some time.If any one has any details on the demolition of these houses it would help me put dates on my census information.Thankyou.

  17. I was at playgroup with my daughter when one of the women who brings her grandchildren mentioned there used to be a mortuary opposite the fox and hounds pub in netherfield. any truth to this? I'm quite intrigued as I walk past it most days
  18. Netherfield is unusual in that it isn't an old village which has been there for centuries. It didn't exist until the railways came to that area in the 1870s, so maps before that time just show an empty space where Netherfield would later be. Here's a map showing that space. As a reference point, the red dot is the site of the existing level crossing at Station Road/Victoria Road - the curve of the road hasn't changed. You can also see Carlton to the west and Gedling further north.
  19. Hi I lived in Carlton until the the early 1980's and then had to move to the south coast with my job I have recently bought an old movie poster and it says in the margin Printed by Stafford Printers, Nottingham & London I have tried searching the net and information is a bit thin on the ground but after a little digging I found a reference to Stafford & Co Limited, lithographic printers for the cinema and the railways. It says they started in Bingham and moved to Netherfield I don't remember them, does anyone have any details about the company? Are they still around? Any help wit

  21. I was having a cuppa with a friend who used to live on forester street, we was trying to figure out what the cul de sac once was before it is what it is now, can anyone remember or know? Also, theres a carpet shop (i think) on there, does anyone know what that used to be, a factory maybe? they grew up on the street and recently moved, shes wanted to get abit of history about her street for a while now as weve managed to cover a fair bit from other parts of netherfield.
  22. Does anyone have any photos of chandos st, forester st, ashwel st etc areas of netherfield? Weve shared and seen plenty from deabil street end but not many or maybe none of this side. Thanks
  23. Before I moved out of my parents house in Gedling, every now and then a chinook would fly on over. Since i moved to netherfield, it seems like a very regular thing, at least one flies over a week, quite low, I do love them though, I love the sound & what they look like so I enjoy rushing out to watch them fly over. But can anyone tell me why there's so many that go over here? Seen a couple of tanks on the loop road too on different occasions either heading towards burton Joyce or from.
  24. Does anyone remember this family from the 1950's? I believe they lived in Dunstan Street, Netherfield but I can't find any trace of them after that. Any information much appreciated. Mandyp
  25. The disused train line that used to run upto gedling pit have been dug up over the weekend & left in 4 piles of 6-10 pieces. Theyv chopped all the over grown weeds away from the gates on victoria road also, leaving just grass & them large stones they have around the lines. ...So, What are they going to be now? New tram lines? a new road? a street maybe? There doing something on the functioning lines too that run across the end of deabil & godfry street. I need to walk past tomorrow so ill get a quick snap of whats left for all to see. I must remember to charge my camera tonight!
