That article on Herman van Rompuy just shows what a complete gravy train the whole thing is. When these useless politico's get jobs like that in the EU they must think that they have won the lottery.

Every politician should be forced to wear clothing with the logos or names of the people who give them money. Like racing car drivers. They should not be allowed to be in public, or in the HoC, or per

Pigs in a trough.

They've never had a real job and they've never had to graft to make ends meet.

They are in politics simply to line their pockets

Dorrell is a complete tosser. In the 80's he sanctioned the closure of many hospitals at a time when many more were needed !

The local MP here (Hendon) a dyed-in-the-wool Tory called Sir John Gorst lost his seat because of the closure of Edgware hospital.

Dorrells plan was to close local units and instead have 'super hospitals' - in our case Barnet.

The theory being that these huge centres would be more cost efficient. Hang the fact that people would have to travel many miles for A & E.

In the end the plan came to nothing and they had to re-open Edgware. The extension bit to Barnet is still an open field I believe.

They've also realised that massive hospitals, which constantly have people coming and going, are much more prone to infection like MRSA and are lax on security (remember when there were several cases of children being taken).

Dorrell is everything that is wrong with our political system.

Career politicians.

Dr Peedell works at the same hospital I do. I know him well. He is a cancer doctor and does not wish for political aspiration. He is totally honourable.

KPMG is an accountancy and legal firm. They do not have the experience or structure to handle the vast amount of data that the NHS produces. There have been some multi-billion pound attempts at this before, but most firms have quit taking their premium first, without producing anything useful.

Dorrell is about the lowest kind of politician there is. He has seen the millions his predecessors have personally made and wants a piece of the action.

True.

The good ones are generally those people who had a career before entering politics.

In the past, the kind of people who use to become MP's were company directors, captains of industry, ex-army colonels - the type of people who knew how things worked and could make things happen because they knew how to.

They were in politics to give something back and because they firmly believed in philanthropy.

Now we have people who are incapable of long-term planning and do everything according to cost - irrespective of social value.

Unfortunately, it's people like Stephen Dorrell who are put in charge of things rather than someone like Frank Field - who would be regarded as 'dangerous'.

I'm trying to be careful here, because Mick tends to remove topics if they become too political. But the reason why other parties are now getting votes is because of the general cynicism with the status quo.

Even Labour voters must look at their representatives and wonder if they know anything social fairness. I mean, Ed Milliband, Ed Balls, Harriet Harman, Emily Thornberry. Not exactly in touch with the 'working man'.

Today Ordinary people are coming forward that have the same qualities and objectives.

I have never removed anything but offensive or abusive topics or posts. They may have been removed or moderated as they do not strictly concern 'Nottstalgia. My personal opinion is that this country (and Notts) is in crisis, therefore peoples opinions matter, where else can they express them?

The long standing political forum was removed because some members could not discuss politics without getting personal.

I believe the decline started when Labour got rid of the grammar schools. That was the ladder that allowed ordinary intelligent kids a way into the higher echelons of power. You would be surprised how many of our 1970s/80sand 90s PMs came up through grammar school on both sides of the house.

Then along came Labour and gave the working class kids the mediocrity of the catch all comprehensive. Not for the politicians kids of course they went private, result most politicians again on both sides of the house are now privately educated toffs.

I absolutely agree.

We had an education system that was the envy of the world, and grammar schools meant that any kid - regardless of their class status, background or family wealth, could achieve the highest status in any field.

It used to be a badge of honour for people to say 'I have achieved through my own hard work rather than my family having paid for it'.

It's extremely offensive now to see people who benefitted from this system dismantling it and leaving us with the mediocre rubbish education system that we currently have. In terms of politics, it means that we have a government full of privately educated people and an opposition that's not much different !

And by the way, I didn't go to grammar school. I went to a secondary modern, but it was still better than the comprehensive's we have now - and I managed to make it to 'real' university.

Well if we had abolished the private education system in 1945 as planned we might have had a better system for everyone. I guess that if there was only one system then it would have had to be good enough for the rich as well as those with less.

And then there's Jermaine Pennant, who left his Porsche at a train station in Spain, and promptly forgot all about it until he got a parking fine five months later.

But back to MPs.

What annoys me most is that for the sake of rotten apples like Dorrell or Andrew Mitchell and Mark Garnier*, they all get branded as money-grabbers when there are decent ones out there. And I'm specifically thinking of the likes of Gedling MP Vernon Coaker, Bassetlaw's John Mann, and others who had real jobs, only drew the expenses needed to run their offices, didn't hire their wife/kids/mistress, need their moat draining or a new duck house, etc.

* Garnier yesterday referred to anyone earning under £150,000 as "dog end voters in outlying regions of the country".
