tomlinson 879
I once had a gent' of the mystic east offering me a device which, when plugged in, would half my electricity bill. I was offered this because I paid my bills on time. He said I sounded cheerful and had a young sounding voice for my age which was nice of him. He went on for sometime about how pleasant I was then asked for my bank details so the plug in item could be despatched to me. I told him to send me the item then I would send him a cheque. I never received anything. Odd!
crankypig 457
Tomlinson I had a similar call,I was offered a plug thingy which I could plug into my modem. ,I would then never have to pay for phone calls again,I said 'won't BT think that's strange that I am not paying them anything' he then hung up. StephenFord 866
Re #26 - Agreed. Same with the folk offering to take up my fabled "accident" and "PPI" cases. They already claim to know about these things (even though I don't) so why bother wasting my time - just send me the cheque and I'll cash it.

barclaycon 569
They think that calling themselves Michael or John will disguise the fact they have an extremely obvious Asian accent ! I've often thought of getting a high rate phone line and referring their calls to it so that I can earn a few bob. I'd be delighted to waste their time and keep them on the line for ages whilst racking up £15 a minute. Seriously though, they are a thorough nuisance. They are just wasting our time and trying to rip us off. I wish there was some comeback. For the most part they can carry on their scams with complete impunity because phone companies and the authorities don't want to do anything. Same with Spam.
mick2me 3,033
My father in law was scammed out of a lot of money by these indian hoax calls before we picked up it was happening. The still get several calls a day from people with asian accents they ask for home by name and have all his details. They get you to install a genuine and free tool on to your computer. https://www.teamviewer.com, once you give them an access code it generates they are into your computer as if they are sitting at the keyboard. I had my first call from these types a couple of weeks ago and told the lady, I knew it was a scam and I could only keep her talking for about 4 hours as I had to go out. She hung up after a couple of minutes. Some years ago I got one of these calls and told them they had got through to the police station... Where I was working at the time. barclaycon 569
As I speak I have yet again received another email from 'Canadian Pharmacy' which sends out stuff all the time - supposedly selling drugs like Viagra and Cialis. It is just a scam of course. They just want creditcard details or attempt to get you click some link which installs God-knows-what on your computer. It is from a different address every time. Mostly from third world ISP's or dodgy outfits like Turktelecom or Softlayer. It's worth looking on spamhaus.org for the top 10 ISP's responsible for sending out this stuff. As I understand it, Canadian Pharmacy and other 'asian' scammers utilize the loophole of 'open relays'. They can get in to someone elses account and hijack it to send out their crap. This is because a) most ISP's security is lax, and b) because certain ISP's actually encourage this kind of thing (as mentioned on spamhaus). Like I say, if there was some kind of concerted effort to identify persistent suppliers of Spam, then the regulatory authorities should deny them access to the global network. It would dry up overnight. Same is true of phone pests. They don't get punished, so they carry on.
