Jill Sparrow 10,386
To be honest, Beekay, I'm nearly 62! As I've said before, I've always wanted an older brother. Got an older sister instead. She's 69. She has always wanted a brother too. So....you've got the job!

Jill Sparrow 10,386
Ah, Clay's. Used to go there with dad to buy our shoes as children. We wanted patent, kitten heels with bows on the front. We got...sensible, round-toed, clodhoppers with segs in the soles! Sis complained that she felt and sounded like a carthorse, walking to Peveril in the mornings. Dad's response was, "You can have what you like when you're paying for your own shoes. Til then, you'll have these!" Always wanted some of those silver, sparkly dancing slippers in the window.

Been thinking about this and I'm not sure whether the Clay's you're referring to also sold shoes. Sometimes, our shoes were from Eric's, which was on the corner of Alfreton Road and Hartley Road, next to FLINT'S newsagents. Sandals for summer usually came from Eric's and I once wangled a pair of silver dancing slippers from there. Clay's was the place for sensible shoes and I think dad knew the chap who owned it. I can see the window in my mind's eye but I cannot remember where the shop was. Anyone recall the location? Shoes from Clay's were always wrapped in a long brown paper bag, never in a shoebox! Beekay 5,234
As we were talking of decades ago, it doesn't really matter Jill. I never mentioned shoes, it were SOCKS. Their location was opposite the Sir Garnet Wolsley, at the five ways island on Denman street, where Norton street crossed Denman st. Can't remember the street that ran aside of Clays, I wouldn't have thought it would be on Mr Google. Bet CT comes up with a street map to shoq me my errors. Cheers little sister.
Jill Sparrow 10,386
Thanks big brother! Possibly not the same shop. I remember that area well. I'm sure someone will know where Clay's shoe shop was. Can't have been far away because we always walked there....in our sensible shoes!
