mick2me 3,033
In the early 60's there was a series of bubble gum cards which had a normal image on one side, on the reverse was a monster version of the front. I believe this is one of the cards, but I cant find any B sides? Possibly Robert Crumb creations for Topps Cards? Anyone remember them?
Charlie 11
Nope but I had a set of James Bond and Man from U.N.C.L.E cards and I bet they're worth a fortune now. Where do all our treasures disappear to?
plantfit 7,678
Hi all, I can remember Bazooka Joe bubble gum, you used to get a small cartoon on a bit of shiny paper, you could hardly read it it was that small, and then the Danger man bubble gums, saved all the tickets and sent them off for my free "ID bracelet" what a cheap bit of tat that was Rog
Craig Strongman 13
I had the James Bond ones, and remember being a bit too infatuated about an actress in a basque I think it was, with her stocking tops showing!!!!!!!!
Beefsteak 305
It's amazing what kind of things help us through puberty!! Grattans catalogue and school biology books to mention but two!!!!!!!!!
johnl 1
What about the 'flags of the nations?' The gum was terrible! Each card showed the flag of a country with a couple of famous landmarks of the area. On the other side of the card were a few phrases in the language of the country. I never managed to get the full set. Cheers, Johnl.

Notts Lad oop North 14
OK in the early 1960's I was living in the Meadows and I recall two sets of bubble gum cards we collected MARS ATTACKS AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Am sure they were American and there was some concern about gorey images eg soldiers impaled on spikes. Best of all each card came with a sheet of pink bubble gum as big as the card itself. Dates? 1961-63 for sure. PS we never collected cig cards then - I just dont recall these despite heavy smokers in the family.
fatskin1 1
I remember Batman cards, related to the Adam West TV series. Most of all I remember the soccer star collections that changed season by season. Do you recall taking a pile of 'swaps' round the playground at playtime and exhibiting them to fellow collectors? The fellow addict would mutter ''got! got! aint got!'' at each card and then offer you some of his own swaps in exchange for your ''aint gots''. In each series or 'set' of cards there were always one or two that were reputedly 'rare'. This could have been a sixties kids urban myth. However a card known to be 'rare' could be worth several of someones swaps to someone who needed it. In fact if you needed one card to ''get the set'' you would give up ''all my swaps'' to get it. poohbear 1,360
The release of the first Batman bubble gum with cards was hyped up by the press and kids went crazy waiting for it to come out. The manufacturers delivered to all the wholesalers on a Saturday to give everyone a fair crack of the whip.I worked for one of these in sales, and on my own bat filled a 7.5 tonner to the roof and went out selling...It wasn't selling, it was just a case of "I've got Batman ..how many do you want?" I flogged the lot that day. Never in my whole life have I had such an easy sale...it was a doddle. We could do with a few lines like this in this recession....
Beefsteak 305
The whole thing , re Batman, was incredibly hyped. I recently read an interview with Dee Dee Phelps (Of Dick and Dee Dee fame) regarding the last episode of "Shindig" which was replaced in the States by Batman in 66, in it she says that they were forced to dress as Batman characters for the final show, to promote it even more !!! I found a clip of the finale of the show on Youtube but it's not working at the moment.
plantfit 7,678
I just finished watching for the umpteenth time Batman the Movie (holy special edition) on CD "some day's you just can't get rid of a bomb" all designed by Admiral Shmidlap aka the Penguin Great stuff YO HO HO Rog
firbeck 860
I'll never forget one Batman episode when they were climbing up the side of a building and a bloke stuck his head out of the window, as they did. Batman said, 'Hello sir and who are you'. The bloke answered, 'My names Cyril Lord, I come from England and sell carpets'. We waited for, 'This is luxury you can afford by Cyril Lord', but it never happened, I'd love to know how much he paid for that slot. I gather that Cyril Lord went bust because the quality of his carpets was too good, they never wore out. My mother had a Cyril Lord leopard pattern stair carpet installed in 1963 and the bloody thing is just as perfect now as the day it was put down. Sorry, I digress, collectable cards, 'Flags of all Nations', 'Military Aircraft', I'm about to sort out the garage and I know there's some in there. One set I do remember featured US TV cowboy series, some of them hadn't made it to British Television, I recall the rarest were about a programme called 'Have Gun Will Travel', never ever saw it, then the programme that was called either 'Sugarfoot' or 'Tenderfoot' depending which channel had the rights to it that particular year. I've no doubt I'll bore you with my scans later. Oh, yes Rog, that old Batman movie was discovered on video in a sort out the other day, it truly is a classic.
poohbear 1,360
I always worried about Batman and Robin..in those days a very dodgy relationship...nowadays they are probably adopting their third kid and got Mandleson babysitting. Worked for Cyril in the 60s on Clumber Street, high pressure selling, and pushing the American idea of fitted carpets throughout, including bathrooms. Enkalon rubbish that never wore out but lost the new look after a few weeks, you still can't beat the old 80/20 Wool/Nylon mix Axminster or Wilton for long life. plantfit 7,678
Can anyone remember the so called "Confederate" bank notes you got with some bubble gum in the mid 60s, little grey confederate bank notes of various values, had a pocket full on me way to school one day, felt like a millionair and when I got to school got the lot nicked, by the teacher, he called it "confiscated" Today I think most of the collectable cards you get are just that, "cards" no bubblegum Rog By the way I think Robin ( Burt Ward) ended up making blue movies for a living, don't know whether he starred in them or directed them
Beefsteak 305
Burt Ward did indeed star in some porno stuff, he now runs the biggest Great Dane rescue centre in the States (If not the world.)

Like you say, lots of gory pictures - impaled soldiers, soldiers under the wheels of cannons etc..... Anyone remember transfers? I think they were a bit earlier. letsavagoo 968
Of the 1960's cards I remember the Batman set and the American civil war. I even recall that there was some press reports as these were considered too graphic and violent and one card 'crushed by the wheel' singled out for special criticism. The other set I collected was World War 2. This was a big set, something like 144 cards. I never quite made the full lot. Just noticed the post above mentions the gorey civil war issue.
