Stavertongirl 1,727
Happy memories? She told me that long hair was dirty. Told me mum what she said, mum was suitably unimpressed and threatened retribution! Can you remember when she complained to Peake about us and he used to stand outside the classroom door watching us? Someone put a note in the register which said snitch. I can remember the lad who did it, was his surname Hook?
Fairlad 12
I can remember Peake watching us through the door window But I can't remember who put the note in the register. Had an English teacher, whose name escapes me, set us a short story to write for homework and when it was marked and handed back I had to ask him what "pornographic" meant (yes I was that innocent!) much to the amusement of the class. I got 8/10 for the story but he added the comment "almost pornographic". The plot involved my friend Keith Humphreys and a girl named Sue Brown but I did swap the surnames around... Stavertongirl 1,727
I can remember him, he was a bit flamboyant, had a thing for Lindsey Cohen. Cant think of his name. Were you there when Darryl Barker asked Miss Trail what fornication was in RE? Remembered it think it was Mr Crompton.
LizzieM 9,539
SG, I knew Darryl Barker, after he left school and when he worked at EMEB Carrington Street.
Fairlad 12
I thought it was Mr Crompton but I wasn't sure. Yes I can recall Darryl Barker and the question! I also got a lecture from Dr Peake after he saw me stuffing fresh grass cuttings down Brenda Thompson's Blouse one lunchtime....
Stavertongirl 1,727
Goodness thought you said you were shy with the opposite sex. I can’t recall Brenda Thompson to be honest. He was a nice lad Darryl Barker Lizzie.
Fairlad 12
BT was a year lower than us, knew her from St Martin's youth club.
LizzieM 9,539
Yes he was SG, he bought me a Beach Boys LP for my 17th Birthday and I’ve still got it! He used to knock about with Pete Ottoway (?), not sure if they were schoolfriends or if they knew each other from work.

Astwood 7
I asked someone about Brenda Thompson - I knew her before we went to BGS. Someone said that they thought she had emigrated to Australia. I organised the 1997 Re-union and discovered that there are a large number of Bilborough pupils in Oz and NZ. Mr/Dr Jacob asked me to organise another reunion at Phil Soar's bash in 2014 but I told him it was someone else's turn to have a go but that I would help them, if they wanted me to do so. In 1997 the school was still standing so we could have a reunion there but now it has gone, so a venue would be a problem.
ChrisFJ 1
Recently moved house and found my old A Level certificate, which I sat in the summer of 68. I arrived at BGS in the autumn of 1965, into the 5th year and endured 3 years there. My start was not helped due to the fact that my parents had bought the old headmaster Doctor Peakes house on Parkside which seemed to rile the existing staff, making me a marked man, and I was also told to drop the double barrelled surname at that school which seemed to make assimilation into the school difficult. It is strange that I have not given that 3 years any real thought for such a long time, but reading this thread has reawoken that period and I will put together some thoughts and think out the names of some good people, both staff and pupils, and some real lousy staff, particularly in my first twelve months there. Of the names on this so far I remember Tim Wallace, good at hockey, Barnard Ely and Prout, who won everything road and cross country running, Bob Hallam, Ian Stuart, Malcolm Page, fag ash Sharpe and John Beckett. It is the girls I remember most though and will remember them on this site later. Williams was a rum bloke, and he told me not to come back to school after sitt8ng my last a level exam paper unless I got my haircut. I didn’t, back sneaked back in , was growing it to go to Warwick uni in the October!!
Beekay 5,261
Welcome to Nottstalgia ChrisFJ, always nice to have new blood who can add more history and memories. I never went to BGS, I weren't clever enough. Any road I left school in 1958. When you finished school in '68, I'd been married 3 years. Welcome to the site though and Happy New wotsit ! Beekay. Jill Sparrow 10,398
Welcome, Chris FJ. You mention John Beckett in your post. Is this the now Professor John Beckett? I think he would be around the right age. If so, he was the son of Rev. William Vincent Beckett who was the vicar of St Stephen's church, where I attended Sunday school and later sang in the choir/played the organ. John also played the organ. John initially attended Peveril Bilateral, along with my elder sister and Philip Smith, one of our neighbours. The three of them travelled together in the mornings but my sister recalls John was always late! He was a bright lad but possibly a late developer, hence going to Peveril. He obviously switched to BGS to sit his A levels.
ChrisFJ 1
Yes I think it might be. John came for his a levels, and went onto read history and politics I think at Lancaster University in 1968. Where is he now?
Jill Sparrow 10,398
John will be retired by now but he was Professor of History at Nottingham University. His name cropped up regularly in the NEP and on various Nottingham history sites. Not bad for a boy who couldn't get to school on time!
ChrisFJ 1
Yes, found him on nottingham uni site. Doesn’t look as though he has aged a lot, but it is definitely John. He came to BGS with Malcolm Hawley, and Ashley Sharpe (otherwise known as fag ash) in the autumn of 69 to do a levels at BGS.
Jill Sparrow 10,398
He usually looks a bit hirsute in photographs. Mind you, his father had a wonderful head of hair. Nice man all round, Rev Beckett. John had an older sister named Joy. I didn't really know either of them very well as they were a fair bit older than I.
ChrisFJ 1
Sorry, was autumn of 66, as we sat the a levels in 68.
Jill Sparrow 10,398
That would make sense, as he's my sister's age.
ChrisFJ 1
Can’t say I remember much detail of my first year at BGS, 65 to 66 when I sat the o levels but some names have come back to me. John Bignall, Rob Sissons and Steve Critchley. I am fairly sure that during the year a boy died from an injury sustained in a rugby match. I never knew him but think he was known as Taff. I hope that the tree that was planted in his memory survived the redevelopment of the site as he seemed to be a very popular lad in the school. A couple of teachers I recall made life particularly difficult Skedge and Downing, although Singleton was in his own quiet way supportive.
Astwood 7
Taff who died after an injury in a Rugby Match, was Anthony Harvey, who at the time, was going out with Liz Clipson, I believe. Think he lived on Melbury. There was a commemorative tree outside the main entrance but don't know if it is still there since the school was knocked down. There was also one to a girl who was knocked over riding her bike and, I think, one to Mick Winkley who was killed with his family in France. His brother survved the crash. I suspect you have the names muddled - Peter Ottewell was in my Class and his nickname was Fred. We got kept in in Physics and he put 2 pigeons in his haversack and let them out in the Physics Lab.,, Mr Tebbutt had a fit and kept us in another night too.
LizzieM 9,539
Well considering it was 55 years ago I only got a bit of Pete Ottewell’s name wrong! I have a feeling my Dad knew his Dad through cricket or football but it’s so long ago now.
