Bubblewrap 3,815
Be riding on the tram a few times recently It looks like The Red Cow has been shut for some time.
Cliff Ton 10,574
The Red Cow which is now closed must've been built in the 60s / 70s judging by its style. Lenton Times has a photo of the earlier Red Cow which was replaced by the "new" one. http://www.lentontimes.co.uk/images/gallery/gregory_street/gregory_st_red_cow_1950.jpg
Bubblewrap 3,815
The "old one" looks a nicer building & it sold a decent pint too.
radfordred 6,284
The last landlord of the Red Cow was only paying a £1 week in rent to the brewery & then renting the rooms out to the tram workers.

plantfit 7,694
Saw it or rather didn't a couple of weeks ago when I visited Nottingham to ride the full tram network,I also noticed the Red Cross center across the road from the cow is boarded up and ready for demolition,I soon won't recognise the city of my birth, Rog
taxi ray 170
The red cross building was, used as a education establishment for kids that had behaviour issues, they had a small car workshop that was used for training kids about cars. The building was flooded a couple of years ago, something to do with the work on the tram, and has been closed since. I did a first aid course there about 37 years ago with the scouts, and again about 20 years ago from work.
catfan 14,799
NCT sent me there too in '76 for a first aid course too Ray !
Guest
My school bus used to cut through Church st.and Gregory st.I always remember that white pub had two stone steps mounted near the kerb...presumably for horse drawn coaches & carts? ( the pub opposite Magnets/southerns).
Cliff Ton 10,574
Despite all the tram disruption, they are still there. I think they are a listed feature. https://goo.gl/maps/zNJcHReKb8F2

taxi ray 170
It looks like the old petrol station, that is next to the white hart is being demolished as well, workmen moved in last week.
Cliff Ton 10,574
.. workmen moved in last week. They might just be travellers . That site was a car wash for a long time after it finished as a petrol station.
taxi ray 170
Not quite Lenton but close enough, they have started to demolish the pub at the top of Ilkeston road, I think it was originally the Royal George. Finished up being called Seven or Bar Seven.
Cliff Ton 10,574
....and I believe it will be replaced by student apartments.
PeverilPeril 3,311
I vaguely remember walking across that overflow as a small boy in the 40's. If not that one it was something similar around Lenton. I was only little and a bit scared.

catfan 14,799
The pedantic police say yes. 56 lb half hundredweight before this silly EU rubbish.
LizzieM 9,541
My Great Grandparents had a Newsagents at 24 Park Road for many years, until about 1930 when they moved to a newly built house in Wollaton village.  Their 3 daughters, one of whom was my Granny, knew Albert Ball really well as he was the same age. My Grandad used to send letters to him in France.

It wasn't pedantism, catfan, it was me checking that my recollection of a measuring system that I have not used for fifty or so years was correct.
LizzieM 9,541
My Grandad and Gt Grandad had a timber business somewhere there, probably under the arches(?) in the 1920/1930s.  They went bust in the Great Depression.  The company was called Moss & Alvey, but sadly I have no other info.
LizzieM 9,541
Oh thanks Ian, another piece of my family history discovered.  Great Grandad Alvey was a Manager in the timber trade up in Scunthorpe docks, certainly when my Granny was born in 1898. At some stage he moved the family back down to his roots in Nottingham and opened a Newsagents on Park Road, Lenton, just around the corner from Abbey Bridge. In 1916 his daughter, (my Granny) married my Grandad who was also in the timber trade so I suppose they thought it a good idea to start the business.  Tough times.
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Used to ferry George Atkins around in a cab late 60s early 70s I worked for Starline behind Canning Circus at the time. Bit of a lad our George but a good fare, always a good tip....
NewBasfordlad 3,599
^^^^^^^^ You worked at Starline or Atkins?
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Know it, Starline had the contract for all Georges places at one time, they even went out and bought a nice second hand Merc to pick him up in.
