  2. Memories of Griffin n Spalding mu mum was a seamstress and before I came along she worked at Debenhams factory on Castle blv that belong to Griffins this is were all the wedding dresses were made. When I was an apprentice I worked in a salon which was at the top of Alfreton rd we used to have a client come to the salon who knew Mr Griffin her name was Mrs Oakland she was in her 90th year so my memory fades a little. Back to Griffins yes it did have lifts (before moving stair cases) i can just remember i'm sure that they also had lift attendant's who would take you to the floor yo

  4. Went there once in the 70s for a “gentleman's evening”. Basically a strip show with a couple of average comedians. That event sticks in the memory because a mate of mine had a few too many drinks and heckled one of the strippers. She answered back by removing her thong and rubbing it in his face.

  5. I've possibly mentioned this before but when my mother was a child, her mum was employed by Bairnswear to test new knitting patterns for baby clothes, using their yarns. Grandma was very skilled in knitting, crochet and needlework of all types and this was work she could do from home. Grandma made up the garments, noting any errors in pattern instructions and observing the required tension. When completed, the finished garments were displayed in the window of Griffin and Spalding, together with patterns and wool which could be purchased from the relevant department within the store.

  6. It's been called Sandfield House for as long as I can remember, but I never really paid much attention to what actually happened there. This gives a bit of extra information/confirmation. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm015853/posterid/ntgm015853.html There are contributors here who may remember it when it was connected to the NCT Social Club.

  7. Hi long time no write. Its a no brainer in Australia we had a 1.5kw system for9 years and with the rebate for power in the grid it paid for its self in 3 years (costs $3000 with 3 year interest free loan) . Now have a 6.6kw system which produced 20000kw in the last 2 years and so paid for its self as they have gone cheaper and only cost $3700 fitted and i sold the old system for $400. But that was not the reason I came on here, sad to report that my old school mate who was very active on here Michael Booth has just lost his bride of 56 years,Jean his wife was having treatment a few years ago

  8. Mary Baker Street Brook has been cleaned out and opened up in a few places. As you walk along the brook you can now see more and more wildlife, the water is now clear and you can often see fish. Friday and now Saturday markets are still going , but now held on the pedestrianised High Street, But as other Towns the market is a shadow of its former self. No longer is it used by young ladies looking for a new outfit for Friday night fun at the Welfare.
