  1. Got no interest in the politics thread whatsoever but some find it interesting so get on with it, I try to post what I've been on with during the day or the garden and hobbies threads but not everyone likes those threads, the historical side of Notts should have more posts I think because they are of members memories, I don't know what the answer is to creating more posts, we need to attract new members how we do that I don't have a clue, maybe a "welcome to new members" section and encourage them to post their thoughts and memories Rog

  2. Tomorrow Australian time we celebrate our Remembrance Day 25th April is ANZAC Day The day starts with dawn services symbolising the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps that took part in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Whilst I have no relatives in Australia who took part in conflicts I do take time to remember my Dad who survived Dunkirk, was posted with the 8th Army to North Africa then invaded Sicily and fought up through Italy. My mum was in the WAAF initially on balloon crews and then on the bomber airfields of Notts/Lincs. My Maternal grandfather fought with the Royal Ulster Rifles

  3. I have only posted once/twice on this thread. As we have regular people posting maybe you can answer a few questions for me? On May 2nd its the day you vote now we have had leaflets come though our door which say Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire councils are to join forces, they say that the region will be given powers it has not had before with control over a level of funding that will enable long term improvement in the performance of the regional economy of the regional of the prosperity of its people. Question ? Did anybody ask or vote for them to join together.? not

  4. Having worked in the public service for a while. I am a firm believer that you could sack at least 30% of the work force and make no difference to the services offered. I am not talking about the front-line workers in our health services, emergency services, armed forces, transport etc. I am talking about the rapid proliferation of "administrators/managers" whose sole aim appears to come up with more ways of having the front-line staff do more reporting and data collecting thus spending less and less time on doing what actually matters. Political staff should be reduced in all levels of govern

  8. I used to drive one like that for MAKEMSON, when I worked part time for them. I did a colliery run from top of St.Albans road, via Bestwood road to Calverton colliery. I've also worked as a conductor on their Bulwell market to Bestwood village, on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm fairly sure that was a lowdecker with the long bench seats and gangway down the starboard side.( the one in Oz's link).

  15. I have said before on here that one of the reasons I left the UK in 1975 was the absolute stupidity and sheer bloody mindedness of the leading trade unions at the time. I was never a real supporter of them as I saw what they did in the auto and the coal industries. Here I am 50 years on and am a staunch advocate of sensible and properly led unions. I watch with amazement at how 14 years of Conservative governments has progressively destroyed the very fabric of the UK for its political mates. Australia went down the same track with the Liberal/National (Conservative) coalition forming gove

Surely you mean Makemsons There is a great slideshow here with some shots of a Marsden store for our Ben The Omnibus Society | Makemson, Bulwell, Nottingham (zenfolio.com) There is also some good stuff on the Bulwell photos Facebook site including a red and cream Makemsons single decker in a montage of a number of their coaches.

  17. Our cats brought 2 baby goldfinches in yesterday, alive but too damaged and young to rescue. Breaks my heart. They usually account for about 20 fledglings and adult birds pa. Wish we didn't have them. They also killed several frogs a couple of months ago. Oddly enough they were all male frogs and there is still un fertilised spawn in the pond. Why the hell we have domestic cats I do not know. Lovely creatures but killers.

  18. Years ago, when I worked at 24 Low Pavement, some of us grew tomato plants in pots placed in front of the large, Georgian windows and overlooking the garden at the rear. They did well there as they got lots of sunlight. At lunchtimes, fresh tomatoes, straight from the plants tasted very good. There is nothing to compare with the taste and smell of homegrown tomatoes.

  19. I don't have a greenhouse or a shed, but have managed to successfully start off some tomato seeds that I've had wrapped up for nearly two years. As it's my first time, I'm looking to Mrs.B to guide me along. I believe they may be some type of Beefsteak toms. Edit. Should'nt be on this thread I know, but who's watching.

  23. The Dickinson & Morris pies sold in supermarkets are nothing like the ones they sell in their own shop, full of gristle and lacking any flavour. Last one I tried ended up in the bin. The only half way decent supermarket pork pie that I’ve found, having sampled many, is Sainsbury’s own brand, although it could do with more seasoning. Must remember to get a proper one from Chambers next time I’m in Arnold…

Serving in the Sherwood Foresters he was sent to the far East, taken prisoner, survived the Burma railway only to die when torpedoed by an America Submarine, USS Sealion. He was on the Rakuya Maru, one of the infamous hell ships whilst being transported to Japan.

  26. Been to Melton Mowbray market today, not a great deal going on, a lot of empty stalls in the covered "tat" market and not many people about, the street market was worse half the stalls missing compared to two years ago, I got talking to a lady who owns the Mrs B's cafe and she said today the market is a lot bigger to what it has been of late so it must have been very poor, shops wise once again a lot have closed down and now empty, there are however plenty of Vape shops, barbers, mobile phone repair shops and a smattering of the usual charity shops, I did see one butchers shop with a queue out

  27. Off what? You rarely participate so why on earth would you read it? The only reason someone dislikes something they read is when they don't agree with it, if they do they will not object. Perhaps Col's sometimes perceptive and erudite observations are a little too close for comfort to dyed in the wool Tory supporters? Maybe defending one of the most disgraceful parliaments in living memory with not go down well with others. It's been said before that we all have memories but they are finite and once recalled can only become repetitive, and quickly kill this forum

Obviously all about Australian participants. When it is on we only see events where the Australians participate and never see any of the non main stream but nevertheless interesting sports. FFS Break dancing is not a sport neither is "sport" climbing or 3x3 Basketball, what in the heck is artistic swimming? Where are they going to surf in Paris? Have a guess, it will be in Teahupo'o in Tahiti, French Polynesia. What a bl**

  30. Due to us having something vaguely approaching decent weather.. I took the weekend off from fretting about my bathroom refurb and set about the garden. Yesterday I cut the lawn at the back, then planted up a few Lupins and other things from the garden centre. I noticed all had been nibbled at by something, but could find nothing on them or in the pots. I was left with just one Geum in a pot on the patio... I thought about cutting the front grass but was too 'whacked'. Later in the evening I went out with my torch and found FIVE snails all feasting on one Geum plant.. They are now h

  31. When the late Mrs Loppy used to go away. Usually to visit her folks in Nottingham. I tried to do a major upgrade then wait to see how long it took her to notice when she came home. Biggest laugh I got was one time I replaced the bathroom vanity mirror with a real big one. It took about three days before she came into the living room and said, "Did you do something to the bathroom mirror while I was away?" She was smart, sometimes I think it was her way of getting things done.

  32. Somewhere I have a medallion given to all the employees of the automotive components company I worked for in Sydney celebrating 75 years of operation. They only went and spelled the name of the company wrong didn't they. HR who organised it and did the proof reading of the artwork got an almighty bollocking from the MD. I suppose one day it might be worth something.

Nice little trinket given to me the other day, a pin badge of the Raleigh heron, We were given a pin badge when I worked in the fabrication shop at the Raleigh for a couple of years early/mid 90's, unfortunately I lost mine many years ago but a good friend of mine who worked in the design office came to my rescue the other week and gave me this one, I have put it next to a twenty pence piece for scale Rog

  35. People of a certain age might remember "Let's Go to San Francisco' by the Flowerpot Men in 1967, who were just a group of session musicians. They recorded a few other songs but none were successful. One was 'In a Moment of Madness'...which was later released by White Plains...although it was the same people. I'd forgotten how good it was.

  37. It's greatly to their credit that they could still perform in such embarrassingly bad conditions. A good demonstration of how pop music was treated in those days. The programme and organisation was in the hands of middle-aged men in suits who had no idea or understanding of what was happening.

  38. Not seen this before, a remastered live Beatles concert in Washington, the first one after appearing on Ed Sullivan. The beginning is almost comically amateurish as the screaming audience are on all 4 sides of the stage and Ringo sits with his back to the band ! First Ringo and then Paul try and rotate the drum stage with no luck. This rotation of the drum set and mikes goes on throughout and with the way Ringo was bashing those drums (but still holding the rhythm), it's a wonder the kit held together. George opens with Roll Over Beethoven. It's a

The Midland General B8 from Mansfield to Nottingham via everyone's back garden was often an AEC Regent III RLH (Regent Low Height) and Barton Transport had a very special Dennis Loline II which was the lowest ever for a fully enclosed double deck bus in the UK

  46. There’s a market every Monday in Bakewell Rog. It was excellent last time we visited but that would be over 5 years ago. Bakewell’s a nice town to visit in any case but I was talking on Saturday to someone who lives there who said it’s become very ‘touristy’. There used to be ample parking on the water meadows, just a short walk from the town centre.

  49. Oz, there are several ... I knew some and and looked up others. 'Writing on the wall' written by Sam Smith for the Bond film 'Spectre'. The title is from Daniel chapter 3 'Hallelujah' written by Leonard Cohen, has some strange lyrics, but it is thought to refer to David the Psalmist playing music for King Saul. Also the song seems to mention the cutting of Samson's hair by Delilah! 'Where is the love' by the Black eyed peas mentions 'turning the other cheek' which are Jesus' words about how Christians are supposed to treat people who treat them badly

  50. I could never understand why some people think money equates to intelligence. As a teacher myself, I found that some of the brightest children were from poor families. The problem lay in convincing the parents that their child's route to a better life depended on education. A few could see it but many could not. Many of The Manning girls were from Hyson Green. Their parents had very little but their daughters were given a first class education of the type that would cost a great deal of money today. Sadly, many of them became teenage brides as soon as they left.
