  1. Theres a bit on the Birkin family in an old bygones issue. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Bygones-lace-dynasty-Nottingham/story-12176136-detail/story.html#!
  2. would he have been part of the Birkin family that were involved with lace making.
  3. Poohbear, you are right in the 3rd picture the arrow is too far to the left if you position the houses in relation to the pram works at the top you will see roughly were they were.
  4. That site has been mentioned before, it is not really up to date. Try this link. http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/nottinghamshire/nottingham.html
  5. The wife had a friend on May avenue, the lady now lives in Richmond on thames, her name is Amner I think she was a school teacher. We went to see her a couple of years ago, books everywhere and no television.
  6. Lizzie, there is an aerial photo on the Lenton times website that includes May avenue.
  7. NET are providing a viewing area for anyone interested in watching the bridge being moved into position. They normally put a time lapse video of the work on the website. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Watch-tram-bridge-moving-place/story-19846042-detail/story.html
  8. There is a few signs at the abbey street, gregory street junction, saying works starts in july 2012 for 12 months, they are still working in that area, so at least 3 months late in that area.
  9. It will be put in place this weekend, as the ring road is shut overnight from saturday until 6am on sunday, they are going to jack it up and then slide it into place. Lets hope that they dont overun the time, as the robin hood half marathon is on Sunday.
  10. I think this is a lot of rubbish, the cost alone must be astronomic. It is 4,500 miles by road passing through various countries. I dont think that it would pay you to send it by air either. Is the sand that was used in Nottingham special, as surely there is plenty in Dubai.
  11. Seeing the picture of the Bartons bus going to Melton reminded me of this, it is a print of a painting done by a local artist, I bought it from the xmas fair that was in the square a few years ago.
  12. Theres an article on the BBC website about Asda, and it being the first superstore. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23900465
  13. We have a swann set up with 4 cameras, very easy to install. The picture quality is good in the day and ok at night, you really need good cameras for night time. Mine is used more for a deterrent rather than preserving evidence. It is just set up on the tv, the wife often checks the images to see what is going on outside. I call it being nosy.
  14. Brittania hotels are quite reasonable, the 1 on st james street used to be the albany, it is a bit rough around the edges but ok, there is also a travelodge on maid marian way just above the salutation. The hotels in the city centre are normally quite busy so it is best to book sooner rather than later. There is a hotel recently opened in Nottingham university it might have some deals on as the students have all gone home now, and there is a bus that goes into the city centre from outside the hotel.
  15. Looks like the Swinger is going to be demolished. http://www.nottinghampost.com/pub-closer-demolished/story-19586075-detail/story.html
  16. Went past the Flying Bedstead at Hucknall today, it was all boarded up. It always seemed a popular pub, not exactly busy but still doing ok.
  17. I have a copy of the 1913 o.s. map, if you let me know where you are interested in I will post it as a photo.
  18. Where is Stu, I bet he would know the answer to this one.
  19. The bus journey from East Midlands Parkway, can easyily take an hour, as they are working on tha A453 as well as work on the tram in the Meadows area. It should be interesting to see the chaos on Station street with that amount of buses moving about. Car drivers can't access Station street from London road now, you have to travel along Canal street and turn left before the crown court. The council already have a camera set up at the junction of London road to catch anyone that turns into Station street, it should make them a few quid. On a slightly different subject did anyone see the propo
  20. Looking on an old o.s. map from 1913 the bridge seems to be there, but the side that is now Bestwood estate is still open fields, so why build a bridge and not continue as an embankment, unless Bestwood was already in the planning stages, but I don't think Bestwood was built until the thirties.
  21. I never knew there was a sewage works at Radcliffe on Trent.
  22. It has been reported in the press today that she will not be getting this house, as it is not suitable for her needs. Possibly not enough bedrooms!
  23. Commo, the best way to park for the arena would be to use the tram stop at Phoenix park and use the tram to get into Nottingham, parking is free, it is very close to the motorway at Nuthall. The car parks close to the arena are all very busy and after the show it is a nightmare to get out of them.If they were to use the tram there would be no need to drive into the city, as it is a bit of a struggle driving in the city if you are not sure of where you are going.
  24. In the picture #426 and #435, both buses have an advert for the co-op garage advertising Simca cars, they must have been one of the earliest importers of these cars. I dont think that Simca are still trading.
