  1. Like my Anglia had. It did have the optional heater fitted, though. To add to the list, positive earth electrics. Made buying a radio that would work impossible even in the 70s.
  2. After weeks, I’ve found out how to log off in Safari on my iPad. I normally use the iPad in portrait mode, but on turning the iPad 90 degrees, settings appear in the top right of the page, including the option to sign out.
  3. Got a Dunnock nest in a pyracantha near our back door. Like the pair of blackbirds in our hedge and various other birds (sparrows, blue tits, coal tits) that frequent our garden, their nest is well insulated with surplus dog hair from when we brush our Labrador.
  4. Daughter’s job means that I’m frequently driving through the city centre late evening to pick her up, which means that I’m occasionally meeting these yellow perils being piloted by people who have had a few drinks. Nearly wiped-out two of them when they were riding the wrong way, against the one-way traffic, on Burton Street by the Guildhall. There might possibly be some benefit of them in daytime to allow people to move around the city, but not when the drunks fall out of the bars.
  5. Very few of those guests on the site are likely to be real people. They’re mostly webcrawler “bots” which trawl the internet looking to find key words for indexing for search engines like Google.
  6. Record the dog barking, then play it back to her in the middle of the night after she’s gone to bed. If she complains, you can argue that you don’t have a dog.
  7. Probably would get a refund, but it’s not the same as being there. Especially as it’s my birthday present from our daughter.
  8. Hmm. Government announces four week delay in lifting restrictions, which takes it to 19th July. I’m due to go to the F1 at Silverstone on the 18th, along with thousands of other people who’ve bought rather expensive tickets. Oh well.
  9. @Beekay, Max Spielmann advertise that they still do 35mm processing, but only to CD/DVD/USB stick.
  10. Quite possible that my dad is in that film as he’d qualified as a mental health nurse in 1936 and, apart from being in the army 1938-1946, spent all his working life at Mapperley, retiring in the mid 1970s. By all accounts, Duncan McMillan still walks the corridors as a number of people claim to have seen him.
  11. Interesting that whoever wrote that diatribe didn’t mention Harry’s two tours in Afghanistan, or his work with disabled veterans through the Invictus Games. There again, his uncle (who shall not be named) was also a Navy helicopter pilot.
  12. Doesn’t need T-Cut. That patina probably doubles its value. Likely worth around five grand as-is in today’s market.
  13. This week is the first anniversary of our daughter arriving home from Cape Town via Heathrow, where she acquired the virus and passed it on to us. Since then, I’ve acquired Raynaud's Syndrome in some fingers, which makes going out in cold weather painful, not had a full night’s sleep, and joint aches - all of which have appeared in the last year. On the positive side, done over 1600 hours as an NHS Volunteer Responder and completed nearly a thousand tasks for the scheme, helped two clinical trials on antibodies, nearly donated plasma (no suitable vein), and saved a she
  14. Had the AZ jab on Friday at the former Wickes store in Mansfield. All very efficient. Bit of a sore arm and a sniffle yesterday, but fine now.

    CB Radio

Mobile phones go back quite a bit before cellular networks came into being. Before them, you could have a Radiophone fitted in your car for a couple of thousand quid. Until the Post Office introduced System 4 for direct dialling in the early 1970s, calls had to be placed via an operator.
  16. “Called Faux, the artisan butcher and deli will have meatless chicken thighs, salami, black pudding, quarter pounder burgers, meatballs, pastrami, bacon, brisket, pork belly and more.” I’m still missing something here. Why call themselves butchers when there’s no butchery involved?
  17. Could be worse. A mate of my dad had the surname Hitchcock, and everyone called him “Scratch”.
  18. Passing through Sherwood this afternoon and noticed a new shop opening just up from Boots - a Vegan Butchers and Deli. Erm...
  19. Flogged by the landlord to someone in Essex for a six figure sum.
  20. And the shilling was the same size as a German Mark but worth a quarter of it, and fitted quite nicely into German cigarette machines. Allegedly.
  21. Doesn’t look like it, Ian. That reg isn’t on the MOT web site, or on the insurance (AskMID) web site either.
  22. The whole “classic car” market has gone barmy. Cars from the 70s and 80s that were barely even worth scrap value after three years are now going for silly money. How about seven grand for a Morris Marina 1300? https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1309038
  23. My nephew finally got home yesterday - sixty days after being admitted to the ICU at the QMC and being put into an induced coma while he was intubated. He spent the last two weeks being helped to learn to walk again after being stuck in bed. He’s 42 and fit, so it shows this virus can affect anyone.
  24. On the subject of Mark T, he was also a neighbour of ours and we often see him in Arnold at his shop (when it’s open). I can’t see him getting much sympathy from his other half, Brian!
