  1. I’d hardly describe the (then) prime minister as a scapegoat. He was elected to the highest political position and to be in charge of government policy, expected to make the correct decisions affecting the country, and be accountable for those decisions. He had access to every expert opinion available, some of which he apparently chose to ignore where it didn’t suit his views. He wasn’t nicknamed the shopping trolley by those who knew him well for no reason.
  2. Hopefully, these reported comments from his meeting with Sunak will come back to haunt them. “Why are we destroying the economy for people who will die anyway soon” ”Bed blockers”
  3. Know what you mean. My Apple watch has become indispensable - it even does an ECG and can tell me when I’m having an atrial fibrillation episode, or if I’ve fallen over. Although to get back to the gist of the thread, the best price I’ve found for a replacement battery for mine is £59, while Apple quote £95.
  4. Quote from a financial journalist - if annual inflation and energy prices were taken into account: The Winter Fuel payment for the over 66s due next month fixed in 2000/01 at £200 should be £1035 this winter and £1480 for over 80s, both plus the extra £300 given last year and this. The Cold Weather Payment £25 should be £57. The Warm Home Discount £150 should be £268.
  5. Until the ink runs out. Then you need to remortgage to replace it.
  6. @benjamin1945If you ask nicely, they might even give you a few pics, or possibly a DVD, of your colonoscopy. I stuck to having the pics. Very useful in getting rid of overstaying guests.
  7. Apparently, F-111 was cheaper, at a time when TSR2’s costs were going through the roof (and Wilson wanted to keep on the good side of the USA). But even that was cancelled when its production costs rose, so we got Phantoms and Buccaneers instead. Shame, really.
  8. Just as well you didn’t find the Karcher place, @trogg. It’s moved out to the new business park on the A612 towards Burton Joyce. I went in there a few weeks ago to try to get some replacement nylon washers for my patio cleaner, only to find they don’t stock spare parts and could only order what I needed if I gave them the part numbers and serial number of the pressure washer for them to get the parts posted to me. It’s not really a parts and repair centre. It’s just a sales showroom.
  9. Town/city centres have been struggling to compete with out of town supermarkets and retail centres for quite a while. Add the internet and online shopping, and it’s no wonder that markets and small shops can’t compete.

    Food

My dogs used to love Chappie dog food. At the time, there was a decent amount of salmon in it. These days, it smells nothing like it used to and is mostly cereal. I was told that the fresh salmon used to frequently disappear from the Pedigree production line, only to turn up in my then father in law’s local pub in Harby, where it was sold on the cheap for human consumption.

Know how much pork in a Greggs sausage roll? 18%. The bright pink filling can include virtually any part of a pig, including offal, sinew, and intestines. And that’s why they don’t/can’t advertise it as a pork sausage roll.
  12. Too true, Phil. First time in 45 years.
  13. Today, I will be mostly waiting in for the very nice RAC man to come and drain the petrol from my diesel tank. I won’t name the plonker who did that!
  14. Spaghetti junction looks intimidating, but from my experience, it’s nothing compared to the M42/M6/M6Toll interchange. Watching some drivers wobbling between lanes, not knowing which one they should actually be in, was a cross between amusement and blind fear of an accident waiting to happen.

    Cats !

Apparently, some researchers have discovered that a vegan diet is good for cats. Good luck trying that with our two feral mouse and bird killers. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12513067/Now-CATS-told-vegan-Felines-follow-meat-free-diets-fewer-health-disorders-likely-need-medication-study-claims.html
  16. About twenty years ago, I was asked to clear the garage of a recently-deceased friend. He’d been a planner for BT before retirement, designing phone systems for large businesses. Simple job, I thought, until the door was opened. His garage was literally piled to the roof with stuff he’d bought for jobs around the house, most of it still in packaging. Turned out that he’d decide on doing a job, plan it all out, buy the tools, then forget about it for reasons which later became clear*. In all, there were 26 drills, ranging from cheap battery drills up to DeWalt SDS, half
  17. Proper raita does have cucumber in it. Our favourite local Indian restaurant make their own and it’s bloomin lovely!
  18. I did notice that Arnold Wilko have spread some items around to fill otherwise empty shelves. The place wasn’t very busy, either. Unlike Poundland next door, and Boyes down the road. if it does shut down completely, I must admit I’ll miss the free car parking most of all.
  19. I’ve thought about going electric, but for me, the negatives far outweigh the positives so far (sorry!). We need something far better than lithium ion. Batteries that will charge quicker, weigh less, deliver far more range, and be a damn sight more friendly to the environment. And then there’s the (lack of) charging infrastructure should you need to add juice on the road. I’d not want to join a queue of electric cars all waiting hours for their half an hour (or more) of being plugged in. Filling with diesel or petrol takes about five minutes. I just checked, a Tesla wei
  20. Wilko’s problem started when they thought it a good idea to bring in a whizzkid from Sainsbury’s to shake the company up. Out went the spit & sawdust, in came relatively posh products and brands. It wasn’t really what their customer base wanted. They also couldn’t compete on price against other discounters. In Arnold, for example, there’s Poundland, B&M, Savers, and Boyes. All selling comparable products, and selling them cheaper than Wilko.
  21. Got ‘What Three Words’ on my phone, just in case, but never used it. I do use my satnav when going somewhere I’ve not been before, although more as a local thing once I get to the area/city. Although when I was doing supermarket delivery around Nottm, I did ignore the one fitted in the van now and again as it didn’t know the area as well as I did. The Park was one of the worst, as it tried to get me to use a gated road which was off limits to van-sized vehicles. Another was a location in Chilwell where it tried to send me up a footpath. And then there were the new estates where the ma
  22. @LizzieMBit late to the party, but hope things go well for hubby. I was diagnosed with AFib while going through an ECG during my pre-op assessment for my prostate removal, with the result that I’m on pills for the rest of my life, so he has my sympathy! This getting old thing isn’t all it’s cracked-up to be
  23. Not a good day for Forest fans. it appears that Chris Bart-Williams has also passed away today, in America.
  24. What about Gold Coast? Any venues/infrastructure left from when they hosted the CGs there in 2018 that could be used?
  25. As mentioned elsewhere… "The former prime minister Boris Johnson is keen to be thought of as a scholar of the classics. In Greek mythology, Odysseus leaves behind his wife and child to seek adventure, encountering many other women along the way." Like father, like son? Only time will tell.
