  1. Having watched the footage I find it difficult to believe that he is alive but it seems that he is. Not often I win an argument with my missus but seems I was correct. Thanks for the confirmation.
  2. Having a bit of a disagreement with my wife and son. They say the pilot died and I say he's still alive. Can someone settle this please.
  3. Anyone else been here. I went today. Very disappointed. Some nice artefacts but there was no order I could make out. The civil war was one of the most interesting events in our history but there was no reason given or story told in a clear and logical way. Two films showing which made no sense. They spent millions on this museum so it could and should be so much better.
  4. I still have some records that I bought from Arcade Records when my 'now' wife worked there. Hawkwind silver machine LP, Four Tops Greatest Hits and I didn't get staff discount.
  5. Hi Ian. My wife just can't remember the name of the guy at the other shop but he wasn't a Ted and was about 25-30ish. It probably was on Wollaton Street but she doesn't know the name. The 'sister' who my wife took over from may have also have been an 'exotic' dancer which presumably paid more than the record shop.
  6. Asked the missus about this. She worked at Arcade Records for a short time in the early 70's. As far as she recalls it was owned by a brother and sister team who also had another record shop somewhere near the Theatre Royal. The 'sister' had been running the West End branch and wanted to stop working so advertised for someone and my wife got the job. Loved the job but very poor pay so moved on.
  7. My wife worked at Arcade Records in West End Arcade in the early 70's.
  8. Ubuntu and a few other Linux distributions have an option to install alongside Windows if you already have Windows on your PC. You can dual boot any Linux with windows but it can be a faff if you don't know what you're doing. I use Linux exclusively now.
  9. What always annoys me is I need planning permission if I want to change the type of roof tiles on my house yet you get developments like this and 'that' dreadful car park near the station get pushed through seemingly with no consultation. I do like the interior of the Vic Centre though.
  10. I worked at Raleigh from 1970 to 73. I was an office boy/gofer for the concept design department and knew all the factory well as I had to fetch parts or get frames painted etc. I used to go to RIGP office quite often as my boss's (John Gordon) worked there and I had to take messages. I was involved in the project to create the web site subject of this post and did some of the audio interviews. I loved working there but left to work at Players on twice the money.
  11. Yesterday I went in town early morning. Parked opposite the library and walked 50 yards to the Bank (pub not monetary bank) In the space of those 50 yards I encountered litter, streams of urine, vomit and the pavements a mess with chewing gum especially where the bus stops are. It was disgusting. Some can be blamed on drinking but the litter and gum. What's that all about. Is there no pride in the City anymore. Returned from Canda recently and the streets were immaculate.
  12. In very simple terms. The email provided by your internet service provider eg plusnet you log into and download the messages to your computer and store them and your address book on your computer. If you computer is stolen lost or goes wrong you can loose the email stored on it and your contacts etc. that's why you should back up. The other type of email eg yahoo, hotmail etc are stored on the yahoo or hotmail etc computers and you use a name and password to log in and view the emails stored on their servers as are all your contacts. They are not kept/stored on your computer. So you can use
  13. I remember going to a Police sports day. I couldn't have been very old so probably the late 1950's. We had a family friend who wasn't a police man but had some connection with the Police. I am pretty sure that the ground was still used occasionally by the Police for riot training in the 80's although by this time they had Epperstone Manor as a training school with plenty of grounds.
  14. From an engineering point of view a top loader is preferable as the drum can be supported both sides. However the fashion is for under the counter washers here in UK so a front loader is more popular now and if well made they are reliable. We've had a Boshe for several years with no problems. My late mother had a servis twin tub new in 1963 and it was still going in 2009 when she stopped doing her own washing. She wore out before the washer. By this time it had a plywood lid on the washer tub I had made as the original had rotted away.
  15. That's true bubblewrap but the question was where would you put one. I often have to go over Kelham Bridge and it's a devil.
  16. In the early 70's a group of us, male and female would meet at the KD on Saturday morning. We always went downstairs to the basement area. We always referred to it as the 'KD' not its full name. This was the bottom of King Street as per post/photo 36 above. The premises are still there. Can't remember if it is now a wedding or flower shop. One or the other I think.
  17. Between Kelham bridge Newark and Gunthorpe bridge there is no other crossing and Kelham is often snarled up. I would put one there although there really isn't a suitable place.
  18. I was born in the shadow of the Radford factories and lived right alongside them until I was 16. My mum always told me I was born just after 1 o clock, as Players were coming out. I used to go and stand at the top of the entry which was on Churchfield Lane to watch the crowds go past at 5 pm. I got swept away in the crush one time when I was only about 3 and a woman saw me and took me back home as she recognised me as the lad who stood at the top of the entry every day. Everyone always mentions the smell. I always found it quite pleasant. It wasn't a bad or nasty smell at all. Never noticed it
  19. I am in a rural location so can't get fibre etc. I've been with Plusnet for years and find them good. If I have ever had a problem, which isn't often it's generally been line faults and they have sorted it pronto. I would recommend them.
  20. I was on Truro too but well after you. From 81 to 2000. I remember the shop you mean well. We used to play football at the side of the Capitol as it was a cul de sac there wasn't a deal of traffic. The people in the shop used to clear us of as well as the miserable old bugger in the end house. The Tollson's shop I refer to was definitely 100% on the corner of Glentworth. Maybe a coincidence that the similar name on the shop you mention. It was Peter Anson's most of the time I lived there. I know they relocated to Arnold.
  21. Just gone through all the posts in this thread. I was born on Grimston Road in the mid 50's and lived there until 1971. Moved back briefly in 74 but then returned and lived 19 years behind the Capitol Cinema from 1981. I live well away from the City now out in the sticks. Post 89 Clif Ton couldn't recall the name of the corner shop at the top of Grimston Road. I lived opposite and it was Hudsons. Used to go for 10 Park Drive for my mum and she would put them in a paper bag as I was only 8 or so. The corner of Glentworth Road was another corner shop, Tollson's. My dad was a close friend and Mr
  22. Being as tight as a ducks bum I am a very steady driver. When my wife drives she tends to Billy Wizz and I cringe at the deisel bill. However we found that often she was often doing better mpg than me. Sometimes an engine can use less fuel reving slightly higher in a lower gear than labouring in a high gear. My new car has a average fuel economy and what your using at this moment readout on it and you can see this happening.
  23. I have every annual school photo from Berridge infant and junior. When I moved on to Forest Fields they didn't do annual photos. There was once, one of those super wide photos with the whole school taken on a day that I was away so have none.
  24. I like going around charity shops. Arnold has plenty as does Newark and Beeston. I think people who do go to look at the charity shops also visit cafes or other places so it brings in trade. What is the alternative. Empty shops. They recycle stuff that may get thrown away and raise money for worthy causes. I'm all for em.
  25. I bought a book last summer from the Church in Corfe Castle Dorset. There were a few second hand books on a table with an honesty box so I picked one out called Fusing of the Ploughshare by Henry R Richie. It has turned out to be an excellent book signed by the author recounting his experiences as a gunner in ww2 having started life as an East Anglian farm worker. Wonderfully written and heartbreaking at times with his friends killed before his eyes. Anyway what has caught my eye is the dedication on the fly sheet. At the top is 'To Peter from Barbara xx Christmas 1989' At the bottom in a d
