    Food

We recently took a river cruise, ending in Amsterdam. We then bussed to Bruges and Paris. Hubby Googled British food shops, thinking we might find food to take home with us. The only shop he could find on our itinerary, was M & S in Paris. Great, and it was very close to our hotel. We walked to find it, (in a mall) and went inside. It was a French suoermarket. We have never been more disappointed in our lives! Visions of picalilli, Branston etc, gone. We are still scratching our head why M & S are there, selling nothing but French food.
  2. William Crane senior girls had a horsa hut for cookery. A hut implies a wooden building, but I'm sure ours was brick painted white.
  3. Beekay, my mother-in-law would admit she was the biggest coward when it came to anything medical. She was told she needed cataracts removed. She actually went private as the thought of thinking about the procedure for 6 months was too much. She had them done and said afterwards, piece of cake!
  4. Facebook also has a site called Long Lost Family Nottinghamshire.
  5. Just now reading this. Lizzie, sending every good wish for your hubby's good health to return. And soon!
  6. If it's a stag do for men, why not doe do for ladies. I wonder where the hen came from?
  7. Nonna. We started in Switzerland and with high temps. Cruised our way to Amsterdam and now much cooler.
  8. Oh no! How sad, John was a nice man, condolences to his family. You do always wonder when a member stops posting, if they have just got bored with us, or passed away. Thanks Loppy for taking the time to track John down.
  9. 119 was actually the highest temp this week, but, we are in Europe and missing the heat!
  10. Roger, just looking at that bush, is making me tabs laugh! I used to eat goosegogs as green and sour as could be.
  11. I vaguely remember the Park Tavern being built unless memory is wrong (it has been known!) I seem to remember the building of the new one, then they knocked down the old one and that space became the car park. This could have been early 50's
  12. That's some zoom lens you've got!
  13. I never log out LL. Never had a problem by doing this.
  14. Albert is on Facebook. He updated his cover photo end of April. So that's a good sign!
  15. We fly at least a couple of times a year. For years we printed our boarding passes at the airport on checking in. We'd sit at the gate and watch folks flash their phone over the machine to board. We kept saying, we really must join the 21st century and download the Delta app. We did a couple of years ago, our boarding pass goes into the phone 24hrs ahead of the flight. We feel quite 'with it' nowadays using our phone. It is the only app we do use. Mustn't rush these things!
  16. Looking on street view, I think the prefabs are still there. All prefabs were modernized in Nottingham many years ago. They bricked the outsides and put C.H etc inside. They definitely did the prefabs in Bulwell across from the old lido.
  17. I am not familiar with The Headstocks, but think it's nr Bagnall Rd/ Cinderhill Rd? Holden Square was on the corner of Nuthall Rd and Cinderhill Rd. On the right of the photo above are the grounds of Basford Hall. I climbed over that wall many a time, as did all the local kids, to get sticklebacks etc out of Fowlers Pond. Those huge trees in the photo are now on Bells Lane Island.
  18. Jill it is definitely Alfreton High School, Flowery Leys Lane, Derbyshire is the title.
  19. Yesterday marked 32 year anniversary of the hottest day in Phoenix ever. 122f. My friend was flying back from the UK that day. Apparently the manual for flying only covers the event of 120 degrees, for landing. So her plane diverted to Tucson, which is a tad cooler, sat on the runway until PHX dropped to 120. I guess the pilots weren't taking any chances. By contrast this year, it's been a much cooler than average June, for which we are thankful!
  20. What a lovely post, Brenda.
  21. Is anyone else like me, likes to see a number roll over? Recently I noticed my 'likes' were almost at 5000. I was hoping to see it roll over to 5000, then missed it! Next time I looked it was 5001. Darn it. Same in the car, I like to see the odometer roll over to a new thousand. Mine rolled over to 59,000 and I caught it! Little things amuse little minds
  22. Late 1974 while listening to Dennis McCarthy, he mentioned a listener had advertised for an American penfriend in a magazine. She got so many replies she didn't know what to do with them. She offered to pair up anyone in Nottingham with a penfriend. I wrote in and was paired up with a young mum (as was I) in Pennsylvania. We still write to each other, over 48 years later.
  23. June used to be called Flaming June, I guess not this year.
  24. Will you see Compo, PP? If so, give him my regards. I would love to see where he lives and the surrounding area.
