  1. #85 Catfan, you reminded me of a really shy lad in my class many years ago. He didn`t have PE kit so I got him a lovely kit from the spares cupboard and quietly gave it to him. However, on PE day he wouldn`t get changed with the other kids so I let him go down the toilets to get changed. (Not allowed really). When he came back he`d got the shorts and teeshirt on OVER his clothes. He went to PE and nobody commented. The new kit went home and never returned and he continued to do PE and games in his clothes. It occurred to me later that his underwear might have been a tad inadequate.
  2. Brincliffe GS had Bristow - red, Golding - blue, Nicholson - green and Randall - yellow. No idea who the worthies were who inspired the Houses. I was in Nicholson and only excelled at a bit o` poetry reading and the odd bit of Drama. Absolute rubbish at games and PE and made history as the only gel ever to voluntarily drop Domestic Science GCE and take extra Maths instead. Rubbish at owt practical yer see.
  3. (If I remember rightly) 'You go down and I`ll go up it.' (No - it didn`t make sense when I first heard it either.)
  4. Yes - it was always Charlie with us.
  5. Yes, Katy, it was called 'sleep' at our house. I remember Mam also calling it 'guile'. Like many things our parents said I`ve no idea how you`d spell that. Never saw it written.
  6. I put the jar lid side down in a dish of hot water and then it twists off easily (using a teatowel cos it`s hot!)
  7. And that Trolley bus was taking me home to the Medders!
  8. Oh yes, Carni. I`d forgotten that way of opening a tight lid. It does work doesn`t it?
  9. Oh yes, I was often guilty of lollin about reading.
  10. I agree that cycle paths like this are sometimes risky to use but the one at the hump back bridge our bus was crossing was a separate fenced off bridge where bikes could nip across avoiding the traffic lights controlling the single carriageway narrow road. Didn`t make sense to me. Oh well - - -
  11. I hate it when important plot points in TV dramas are conveyed by showing text messages or incoming calls etc on the character`s mobile phone. You`d need a really huge screen to be able to read them.
  12. I accidently posted an empty box - sorry!
  13. On the bus going over a narrow hump backed bridge struggling to follow a cyclist going zig zag really slowly. The driver called out, 'There`s a cycle track on the left, mate.' but the cyclist snapped back. 'They`re not compulsory you know.' Is it a bit infra dig for cyclists to use designated cycle tracks? In the days I used to cycle I`d get off and walk up steep hills -- and I was such a timid cyclist I`d get off and walk down steep hills as well.
  14. When we had chickens we used diatomaceous earth in their feed - it kept their innards free from parasites. They could pick up a nasty worm parasite if they ate an infested slug. And they couldn`t half get through some slugs in a day. Anyway - point is it didn`t harm the birds, only the nasties.
  15. I went to see him at The Odeon where he was going to be supported by The Beatles - but The Beatles had reached mega-stardom by the time of the concert so the auditorium was full of young screamers.
  16. The first record I ever bought was Roy`s 'Only the Lonely' - from Woolworth`s on Lister Gate. He could really do a sad song!
  17. Always enjoy Bill Bryson`s books. Must get hold of Little Dribbling.
  18. Thank you, Carni. I remember happy times here - after a ride in the boat from Trent Bridge it was a magical day out.
  19. Yes, weird! I saw the left facing face first and the other one emerged more slowly.
  20. Oh yes! Well done Michael - and it seems that I even spelled it right.
  21. I remember going to darts matches at the 'Seven Stars' in the early sixties. I can still hear, 'Game on - Stars Arrers! - Keep them dominoes quiet!' Strange things stick in your mind, eh?
  22. #79 I don`t think she invented joojoos, Crankypig. I`ve got a vague memory of something called a jujube (sp?) that was a sort of jelly sweet. Very nice.
  23. Thank you very much. I never thought of the vet. I`ll just ask him to check him. I know he`s chipped but I can`t find the paperwork. Guess I just panicked.
  24. I`m sure somebody will know the answer to this. We`ve got a rescued greyhound and I know he`s microchipped because I remember changing his details to ours when he came to us some years ago but I can`t find his paperwork. Do I need documentation to prove he`s chipped? I`ve emailed the RGT but of course I need his racing name and birthdate - which are in his paperwork! What do you think? Do I need to worry? OH is searching drawers and cabinets as I speak. Sorry to be dim as usual.
  25. I had a similar problem years ago in Debenhams. I was buying a frock and the sales person said I could have 10% off if I had a store card and I could apply now! I thought, why not? and filled in the form. It went into the computer and I was informed that my application had been refused. I was mortified and embarrassed. I said, 'How can it be refused? I`ve got no mortgage, no loans, no credit card, no debts of any kind. How can it be refused?' She just shook her head. I still bought the frock.
