  1. I hate to put my anorak on here.........but the 67 was a Clifton route, so I don't think that was your number
  2. There are now several generations of people who have never known the concept of somebody serving you at petrol pumps.
  3. Ford Street St Mary has cropped up a few times before. There are references to it here http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4404&page=3&hl=%2Bford+%2Bstreet+%2Bmary#entry249915 And here's a map of the area which I put in that thread.
  4. Breck Hill Road in the 1950s. And Stephen Ford will tell us what the bus is.
  5. Well done, rexyrex I've don't think I've ever seen one post answer so many questions and solve so many mysteries in one go !
  6. I know where Freda is, but where is George? And possibly answering the original question..............see post #8 here http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11066&hl=%2Bdonkey+%2Bhill
  7. True. Here's another which Pic the Past say is 1967. You can match these two blocks with the layout on the rear photo in #18. And on the extreme right of this picture, you can see the entrance steps which are shown on the earlier illustration.
  8. And a few photos of it. This is a rear view from Windmill Lane And from the 1830s, looking at the front from Carlton Road.
  9. Surprising how many of those places have survived. Nobody goes up those alleys because they don't lead anywhere; you have to turn round and come back out the same way. So people see you coming out of the alley and wonder what you've been up to in a dead-end.
  10. 50 years ago I was sitting on the floor at Greencroft Junior School, Clifton. I think most of us are in a school photo where everyone looks like this.
  11. I think (not certain) this is what went up when the Mechanics came down. But it didn't last very long.
  12. Here's a couple of photos, allegedly when it was a hotel. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM006562&prevUrl= http://images.francisfrith.com/c10/450/33/W437008.jpg As you cansee, it looks remarkably similar to the way it is now. Externally, there is almost no difference between the building as a hotel and the building as Rushcliffe offices.
  13. My first map (post #2) was 1901. This is from around the 1830s (possibly before the additions made in 1829 mentioned by bubblewrap). Not really enough detail to identify any differences, although the surrounding area has obviously changed.
  14. Welcome to Nottstalgia caeperthi. I think you may have found a subject which hasn't been mentioned here before. Quite a few people may not know the place you are referring to, so here's a clue. Bottom end of Carlton Road. Dakeyne Street - which is to the south of the Asylum grounds - still exists; as do many of the other roads in the area.
  15. This. This was the Mechanics Institute/ Cinema, extending all the way back up on the left of the photo. Look at what is in this location today - isn't progress wonderful.
  16. I agree it's difficult to tell. In the new version (on the right) there is some re-designed concrete seating and the addition of a few split-level bits to add to everyone's enjoyment. To be fair, when you are there it seems a lot better than the old version. But that wasn't difficult.
  17. This is what it now looks like, with the council attempts to hide the earlier mess. See the photos in post #23 for the earlier version of this location.
  18. Compo, I think it might be this one http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11520&hl=byron
  19. They can't win. Complaints when they do something, and complaints when they don't. Look at the examples of people who think that the law should be observed by everyone but themselves......... "Yes, but when I did it, that was different."
  20. March 15th was the last time he logged on, although I believe mick2me PM'd him sometime later.
  21. I'm not sure if this is old, or maybe still in use, but referring to a torch as a flashlight.
  22. All my relatives did that! I'm not sure it would still have worked with digital watches and clocks.
  23. In the very early days with the first building (the two lines directly under the word "Station"), apparently that is exactly what they did. Trains coming from Lincoln went past the station and then reversed back in. That is why the second part of the early station was built (the lower building, alongside the lines to/from Lincoln).
  24. My grandma, when she was still around, always referred to the pavement as the causeway. Never heard it used by anyone else since.
