  1. I don't know much about the FIAT dealer - yet - but Challands Ross were mentioned quite a bit in this thread. Start at post #30. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=198&page=2
  2. Slightly surprisingly, the former forge is still there. It's been a private house for many years; it would be really nice if it wasn't surrounded by the estate. http://goo.gl/maps/1BU3a I'd forgotten about the 'Jack Jack' thing. I'm sure that wasn't his real name but I remember him being referred to in that way. I don't think I ever saw or met the person though.
  3. I think the link had been posted before - but worth seeing again - and I'm stuffed if I can find it; probably StephenFord. So to take it one step further, here's a link I'd posted before to someone's Flickr site with an amazing number of Nottinghamshire (not just city) buses. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8050359@N07/sets/72157603923450406/
  4. Looks like one of the slime creatures in a cheap 1950s sci-fi film.
  5. On the subject of recognising others……….about 10-12 years ago I caught my own reflection in a show window, and for the first time ever I found myself thinking "I'm starting to look like my dad as I remember him at a certain stage in his life". Until that occasion I'd never thought I resembled anyone else in the family, but since then I'm convinced that I'm becoming more like my dad as I get older.
  6. You could be right. Here'e everything before any railways, and certainly before St Alban's Rd.
  7. You aren't alone in thinking that site is utterly cr*p. It used to be good and you could zoom in on the maps to a useful degree, but then they took that facility away and now it just doesn't work. Is this any closer? Showing the early ring-road.....
  8. philby, do you mean the two maps I posted in #33 and #36? I'm not quite sure which direction you want to see more of.......
  9. Anybody want a pub in Netherfield? (I don't think it's really Colwick as the advert says) http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-for-sale/property-27608358.html?premiumA=true
  10. It might've made sense if I'd posted the wider version of the map as well. Even more interesting. http://
  11. Oldest map I can come up with is 1870s, and there's a bridge by then, but you can see where the (presumed) level crossing used to be. Also interesting to see all the wagon turntables marked in the gas works south of the bridge.
  12. This subject resurfaced a few days ago and I've been ferreting around to find these photos of various locations in Nottingham after they'd been hit. The old University College, Nottingham (Shakespeare Street) Trivett Square, Lace Market Pullman's store (which has its own thread) on Parliament Street Described as "Hutton Street, Trent Lane"
  13. And don't even mention the idea of a railway tunnel into the city centre from the south.
  14. If you liked that, you may also like this, from the 1940s.
  15. And there's a reminder of it which still survives....http://goo.gl/maps/WZat1
  16. This might bring back a few memories. It's the only old photo I know of that area. It's looking up Alfreton Road towards Canning Circus, and seems to have been taken from the roof of the school.
  17. It doesn't seem to have been updated or had any additions for over 20 months. Maybe he's gone to live somewhere else and moan about that instead.
  18. In an effort to make things a bit easier to understand, here's the Football Estate area before the Football Estate was built (with apologies for some dodgy joins in the map)
  19. To complete the before-and-after sequence, take a look at this (and then the other thumbnails on the same page) http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/mysteryphotos/show.htm?location=Sawley%20Junc.&img=67-135-34A
  20. Not an area I know but quite a few Nottstalgians have connections with the area......... Britain from Above have added several new aerial photos from the 1920s which centre on Amesbury Circus http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/asearch?search=amesbury%20nottingham (You won't be able to see yourselves unless you're nearly 90))
  21. Interesting bump for a thread where the original topic had been asleep for 5 years. There are quite a few aerial views of Arnold on PTP depending on the search terms you use.
  22. A nice bit of recognition for Mr Beckinsale. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-23339465
  23. The daft thing about all this fuss is that he's never logged on again since the first day he appeared, so will be completely oblivious to what's been going on.
  24. Picture the Past have just added a number of photos of The Meadows during the demolition and clearance in the mid 70s. Nostalgic for me because I did my driving lessons around the area when it looked like this; all roads and no buildings. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;PTPN001805&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;PTPN001811&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;P
  25. I've just got it. The extreme heat caused the problem.
