  1. Can I be the first to say the most obvious - the Castle. But it is pretty good. I'll think of some more original ones later.
  2. I think what you are referring to was the Able Collins Alms Houses. Take a look at this thread for a few photos. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10206&hl=collins+alms
  3. There are quite a few threads on Nottstalgia about record shops in Nottingham over the years, if you do a search. "Downstairs in a basement near Yates" could've been Rediffusion where the record dept was downstairs, and was across the road from Yates .
  4. Yes, your bearings are questionable Mundella was near the embankment; as this states - Mundella Road/Collygate Road. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM018912&prevUrl= Becket was at the bottom end of Wilford Lane (although you could probably see Mundella from Becket - it was straight across the river) As this demonstrates.....
  5. I can see what you mean..........but I don't think I've ever really noticed them! Maybe just take them for granted. Certainly don't feel like you're walking through leafy green area when you're on those streets.
  6. This makes me look like a mere youngster . They'd gone decimal by the time I started. September 1974, British Midland Airways at East Mids Airport.
  7. Difficult to show because Streetview don't go down Lister Gate. This is the closest you can get http://binged.it/YX80yM On the right of the image there's an old building with two triangular pediments; BHS is/was the one to the left of that. And this is what it looks like today - New Look, a fashion store
  8. Yes it's definitely still there. It's a new building which has only existed for a few years. One thing to remember - they don't open on Mondays.
  9. I've tweaked it....it's Nottingham City Transport
  10. Great minds etc etc.....! The main store on the opposite side of the road to all of that lot was C & A.
  11. Good point! It's not obvious unless you know where to look in the first place, or are old enough to remember it. Here's a few clues, so you can identify the others yourself.
  12. Carolyn, go to this site and in the "Search" box put Lister Gate http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/index.php You'll get quite a few from various angles along the road
  13. Odd that they have a website which doesn't seem to have a "History" section. http://www.mundella.org.uk/
  14. These? http://goo.gl/maps/1clhb Not quite yer average council house setting is it?
  15. Welcome to Nottstalgia Retji. Your specialist subject makes an interesting alternative to railways and/or buses.
  16. Yes, it was actually on Goose Gate but I always remembered it as being "down Hockley". That seemed to be used as a generic name for the whole length of road which goes from Carlton Street to Goose Gate to Hockley. Somewhere on the right along here http://goo.gl/maps/ZlIH3 And yes, I remember Meccano Magazine; I definitely bought it a few times, and I even had a few dated from the 1930s which had been owned by my dad.
  17. Thank you for that! A couple of years ago - in a thread which I can't find or remember - I mentioned the Gee Dee shop at the bottom end of Hockley where you have described. Someone replied that Gee Dees had only ever been on Heathcoat Street (where they still are today) and had never been where I remembered them. So I think my memory has been proved correct!
  18. You aren't the only one who gave up on that site. It used to be pretty good, but then they started all that "Memory Box" stuff which nobody understands or is interested in. It now seems completely irrelevant, and I can never find anything I'm looking for. Last time I looked at pages I'm connected with, the "latest updates" were things which had been posted 7-8 weeks before.
  19. McVitie was evntually murdered by the Krays, and that was instrumental in their arrest and downfall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_McVitie
  20. I'm going to bump an old topic of mine, because it's relevant to this thread and some people may not have seen it before. Again, you can play at spotting who is still trading. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8228&hl=1969
  21. If I'm in the right area, does this answer any of your questions?
  22. He'd been visiting Elvis who I believe lives in Bulwell.
  23. I assume that is the bridge which is now Brooklyn Road on modern maps. It first appears at the end of the c19th and seems to go from nowhere to nowhere! Maybe it was originally only designed to take animals and humans. When cars appeared on the scene, it was realised that the bridge wasn't strong enough for them, so the original bridge had to continue to be restricted to pedestrians. Only later in the 1960s/70s (?) was it strengthened and reinforced.
