  1. I left St. Anns in 1951 when we moved to the`sticks' (Bilborough).(which in those days was really a good place to live.) I started at Blue Bell Hill School with 2 friends (Johnny Hardy and Pete Coffey) (both of whom I heard did time for their part in the 1958 race riots. I was by that time also serving at her Maj`s pleasure only in the RAF). I would certainly have been dragged in except by fortune we were no longer in the area. Pete Coffey was as tough as nails even though small in stature.,as was Johnny H. I believe when Johnny died he had one of the largest funerals Nottingham had seen.
  2. Thought this was interesting. New Sherwood Hello, my name is John Palmer and I live in Dorset, England. When I was a boy I was taken to see the Major Oak and have loved the great tree ever since. In October 2000 I collected 500 acorns from the Major Oak and planted them in 3 inch pots at home. Here they got "tender-loving-care" and the best ones were potted up next May into 5 inch pots. When they were a year old, many were straight, sturdy and over a foot high. The best 300 saplings were potted up into 10 litre pots the second year. My back garden was rather full of pots, as you can imagine!A
  3. Can`t be many things in Nottingham that Notts people were looking at 800-1000 years ago that others can look upon today.

Jet, how are you coping with the water shortages? I saw footage of the main supply for Sao Paulo yesterday ,totally dry. What type of fruit do you grow?
  6. Or have had its life shortened by vandals? e.g. Arson attack in 1983 which took two days to put out and was eventually extinguished by filling the trunk cavity with foam
  7. And the gutter is coming away from the fascia as well !
  8. Move to and fro as you focus Fynger
  9. Similar story. When I moved to Australia for work in the 70`s I was running for a train (the station was 1 minute from my house in South Melbourne) when I bumped into the Station guy who had been a n employee at a place I worked at in London. Sadly as I was late did not get his details. Never saw him again . Probably a ghost! Again ,my wife and I were on holiday in UK at Tower of London when we came across an Australian family we had known many years before. As you say, small world.
  10. BLOW me darn...y`could be right, I`m sure you are on the right crack....
  11. OOOHHH that`s sexist sweety! I know what you mean though, my wife has the most amazing ability to assess people, and I`ve never known her to be wrong! Best wishes from Wandsworth.(or is that Brixton.)
  12. Notty, I was looking at `The train line ' site. I had not heard of your one. Thanks.
  13. Thanks for the tip,Notty. I will certainly be on it!.
  14. Having seen this Notty Ash,I gave it a try,.........57 pounds 50 pence return (open). Strange thing, whilst looking at this,a fare from National coach appeared for same dates. How did this happen? (12 pounds return came up)
  15. I come over to UK each year. I try to travel on National Coach. London to Nottingham 5 pounds, fastest time 2.45 mins. compare that with train and getting off halfway from Leicester.! (whist Nottingham being renovated.) Not too bad for this short journey. As a student my old man got me free or very cheap travel. I certainly cannot pay train costs today. My children live in Melbourne. >>>>Adelaide to Melbourne 25 pounds (flight)
  16. In my case, there are many items I would reply to but my typing is snail like I had 2 brilliant ladies who I totally relied on. Result I did not acquire the skill. I did think about Dragon dictate many years ago but never got around to it. p.s.DEF AVOID ASUS computers.
  17. May I just add a p.s to Ashley`s comment ( above),the note.. above was Ashley`s. As much as ,I dislike that adulterer, and his horse faced concubine,------ his mother, the Queen has done wonders for the UK and Commonwealth.
  18. Things...........anymore......... Kate and William! (and George ). Bit of fresh air down here on hols for couple of weeks. Who remembers what happened to them tomorrow,3 years ago? What a pity they do not follow Liz,instead of that horse faced woman and the tree hugger.

    Why?

Funny how the mind plays tricks. I thought I saw Stop the World – I Want to Get Off the musical with a book, music, and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. in the 50`s at the Royal, but it must have been as a solo performer. I did however see the above,a quite wonderful musical and performance by Newlley before (I think) he shot off to America. Thanks for the memory.
  20. No either the Broad Oak at Strelley,or Admiral Rodney Wollaton. I was not a big drinker as I had to put fuel in my car or M/cycle. Did not realise there was a pub at the Hemlockstone!.
  21. As a student in 1962,I remember I could just about afford a gallon to take my girlfriend to the pub in Wollaton....it was 4/6d. !

You have the disadvantage of the English weather,Basfordlad. Let me tell you my tale. I used to pay at least $1000 a quarter before installing panels a few years ago. I now have 2 systems. One is simply for hot water and I NEVER have to switch on my electric water heater. The other system brings in a regular rebate of around $600 a quarter. (so a saving of $1000+ $600). I have gas from the same company so I pay my gas bill with my electric rebate! I then have money left over which I transfer to a little cottage in Victoria which is with the same company. Ah you ask why don`t I put pane
  23. Whilst on the subject of `brilliant' Nottingham people,I saw a program last night about Jake Bugg.(on Australian TV), What an outstanding musician and singer this young man will be. Reminds me of another highly skilled young woman who lived fairly close by and despite a very troubled childhood, has become an outstanding actor/director. Samantha Jane Morton is an English actress and film director. She has won a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award. She is also a two-time Academy Award nominee
  24. Thanks,Michael that was intended for Lizzie ! Others may have wondered!
