  1. Great picture Ian I lived on Russell Rd 1961-72. My dad and I used to walk down to the library in the evening around the early 60s. He was an avid reader and always had library books by his bedside. I used to look at the latest issue of The Mecanno Magazine and the chemistry books whilst he chose his reading for the week. Later on he used to take me in The Central Library which was housed in the old University College building in town and is now part of Nottingham Trent Uni. The reference section there was fantastic and really grabbed me. I later went on to uni and became a research chemi
  2. I was up and walking again within a few days but my back ached for about three to four weeks. It was nowhere near as uncomfortable as the sciatica I was getting previously. I'm pain free now but my back will ache for a few days if I try and lift anything too heavy. The ache is eased with a couple of ibuprofen. Before the op. I was taking dihydrocodeine every 4 hours. Addictive stuff. When I stopped taking them after the op I had a week of cold turkey where I was waking up feeling very agitated. No pain just a tension which kept me awake. It passed eventually but not pleasant.
  3. I had this op done through my company BUPA membership about 12 years ago and it sorted out my sciatica a treat. Before the op. I was taking really strong painkillers just to keep upright. (I was OK laying down). My symptoms came on very quickly and previously I'd had no back problems whatsoever.
  4. I think that's been gone a long time.
  5. Good decision Ian by which I mean retiring as well as buying a 60s Telecaster. I've always loved Telecasters, much more than Strats. I fell in love with them when I saw Bruce Welch with his on the front of a Shadows EP I bought for my 12th birthday. I bought a 70s US made Telecaster from Cranes in The Broad Marsh in 1979. It was Butterscotch blonde and played like a dream. Does yours have the ashtray bridge cover? Mine did. I parted with it shortly after I split with my first wife but got a Squier Affinity for my 60th. Unbelievable guitar for £100. I sold it last year and got an
  6. Some brilliant pics Ian. Thanks for posting. Takes me right back to my youth. I left Nottingham in 1972 to go to Uni. I've since lived in Long Eaton, Loughborough and Grantham but never managed to return to the city although I keep nagging my wife. BTW did you spot Tug in front of the Council House keeping a watchful eye on the demonstrators? The bald guy with specs in The Village People tribute pic has got the biggest forehead I've ever seen. Do you reckon he's an alien? lol
  7. Lizzie, I saw your earlier post where you said your dad played for Notts. What was his name?
  8. I don't think it's an omen Ben. It will be a very close game tonight but I expect Notts to nick it. Coventry are a good footballing team but sadly that's not enough to succeed in L2. When we came down from L1 we got bullied out of many games but King Kev has taught Notts the dark arts and they are now thoroughly “streetwise”. Big Sam , Kevin Nolan's mentor did just the same when he got Notts out of the bottom tier. It's not always been pretty but in L2 it works. The referees are rubbish in the lower leagues and Notts and many other teams in the division have got away with murder. It'
  9. Plantfit, I've just read your post re jelly not setting with fresh pineapple present. The explanation is here: http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=1968 As philmayfield says pineapple contains an enzyme (bromelain) which breaks down the gelatine. The solution is to use canned pineapple where the applied heat during the canning process deactivates the enzyme. Simples ( if you have a PhD in biochemistry) Enjoy
  10. Catfan Everybody else has managed to be polite and adult in their response to my post except you, who has opted to be disrespectful. I have a suspicion reading your other posts on this site that you enjoy being provocative and rude. That's your prerogative of course. Just to say I won't be joining in.
  11. You're so right about bad management at Notts IAN123. Forest's past success has been very good for the City of Nottingham however you're not correct in saying that Forest have always had more success than Notts. I know it's a long time ago but in the early 50s Notts with Mr Tommy Lawton were in the old Div 2 whilst Forest were in Div 3 South. It didn’t last for long as Notts later went into a nosedive down the divisions whilst Forest made it into Div 1 and won the FA Cup towards the end of the 50s. My family have always followed Notts right back to my great grandfathers days an
  12. Thanks for your polite reply FLY2. I was expecting some serious abuse following my post. I've followed Notts County for nearly 60 years so I know all about football banter lol. I didn't expect The Nottingham Post to join in though. I'm surprised they haven't got a 20 page colour supplement out to celebrate Derby's misfortune.
  13. It shows how poor Forest are these days when their supporters have to rely on Derby's failure for some feel good. People in glass houses springs to mind. Forest have hardly had a successful season have they?
  14. Coventry is only 30 mins drive from Daventry where we live and my wife also lived there in the 60s. Her dad took her to see the Sky Blues many times at Highfield Road. She didn’t come with my son and I last August when Notts kicked off the new season at The Ricoh. It was a game for Notts supporters and players alike to forget. Coventry were on top most of the game with Jodi Jones scoring a hat trick on his debut in a resounding 3-0 win for Coventry. Jones sustained a nasty injury last November which put him out for the rest of the season so he was absent for the return fixture at Meadow L
  15. Hi again Leon Leuty's death in December 1955 from leukaemia knocked the heart out of Notts County. He was the club captain and according to Tony Brown's excellent book played his last match on August 25th in a 2-2 draw vs Barnsley at Meadow Lane. Tony Brown also lists friendlies and testimonials and the only one linked to Leon Leuty is a game played on May 3rd against Wolves where it states it was played for the Leon Leuty fund. Notts decline following Leuty's death was dramatic. They rallied in 1959/60 (my first season) winning promotion back to Div 3 after one year in the base
  16. Hi Benjamin1945 Just had a look in my Notts County Official History book by Tony Brown and see Notts played West Ham at Upton Park in the old Division 2 on Saturday 14th April 1951 attendance 23226. The score was 4-2 with Tom Johnston scoring both Notts goals. Johnston a Scottish left winger had joined Notts from Forest in 1948. It was in March 1951 that Lawton’s goalscoring partner Jackie Sewell was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday for £34500 an English record at the time. His transfer caused a massive outcry from Notts supporters. Notts finished the season in 17th place. No
  17. I attended one of the amazing Colonel Shaw's spectacular lectures around 1970. I was 20 at the time and was working as an analytical chemist in Boots Quality Laboratories in D10 at the Beeston site. Someone in the lab. said he was presenting his explosives lecture at Nottingham University and it was not to be missed so me and a couple of lab mates went off to see it. I think it was in the evening and I've never forgotten it. He produced several very loud explosions simply by boiling water in small sealed tubes. I also recall his bent iron bar finale and him firing a tallow candl
  18. Lovely picture Cliff thanks for posting it. We lived at 23 Elstree Drive which is in the bottom left hand corner of the drive as pictured. It looks as if it was just being completed which would date the picture as 1946 which was when my mum & dad bought it. You can also see Brown's woodyard to the middle left of the canal and the footprint for the end of Chalbury Rd.
  19. Hi Martyn, I used to live on Elstree Drive which backs on to Woodyard Lane and in the 50s spent many happy hours playing on the railway line, tin bridge and disused canal. I well remember standing on the tin bridge and throwing stones at other kids. On one occasion a young lad was hit on the head by a stone. It was a glancing blow but it was bleeding a lot. When we saw what we'd done the whole mood changed and we immediately went to help him. How crazy were we as kids? Throwing stones never thinking we might actually hit someone and cause injury.
  20. Hi stpandp, Just seen your post. I remember David Hockley from his time at Beechdale Primary and Forest Fields Grammar school. He made an immediate impact when he arrived at Beechdale in the late 50s because he was such a brilliant footballer. Although he was a year younger than the rest of the team Mr Fletcher included him straight away such was his ability. I'm in touch with one of David's schoolmates called David Franks if you can pass that on. I'd be interested to know what David's been up to these last 50 years or so. Is he still in Nottingham? Please pass on my b
  21. Alan has stated clearly that he will bankroll the club as far as the championship before he seeks to offload to an investor who's wealthier than he. There can't be many owners who've made a profit from investing in a lower league club. I personally think he and Kevin Nolan have achieved miracles following the mess the former owners left. By way of a contrast it looks like the Radfords might be considering their future with Mansfield after another disappointing showing yesterday. Steve Evans is getting most of the blame for The Stags recent implosion. I suspect the Peterborough s
  22. Who remembers the Police Sports Ground that was on the other side of Mansfield Rd about opposite the lido? I remember our primary school participating in Nottingham inter school athletics there in the late 1950s. If you won or were placed in your event you received a coloured ribbon. Does it still exist?
  23. Only just seen this RIP Chulla a very bright and witty gentleman whose posts on here were always a delight to read. My sincere condolences to his family. (I didn't know he was related to KatyJ.)
  24. Sorry for the very late reply. I hope you see it IanLUFC. I had two friends who lived on Naseby Close in the 60s, Brian Revel and Ron Swift. Brian's dad worked on the buses and became an inspector. We were good friends until I left Nottm in the early 70s. I heard he was a naughty boy later but I won't go into detail. I suspected he had a dark side when I knew him. Ron was a nice bloke. IIRC he had red hair. He was best man at Brian's wedding at St Leo’s around 1969/70
