Just to bring this back to the parking light thingy, I remember the paraffin lamps that was put at the side and to the rear of motor cars because on our way home from either the boy scouts or the cubs in about 1962/3 we used to blow the lights out and run off, anyway on one particular occasion we got caught and was suspended from the scouts/cub for a full three weeks, big punishment in those days, didn't see it as much of a crime then but I suppose it could have caused an accident, so if anyone on here had a parking light blown out on a Tuesday night on Summerwood lane Clifton in either 1962 o

I remember cycling home from work each night, (maybe the mid 80s) and stopping off at Harvey Haddon stadium to watch the 7 day race for 1/2 an hour, it was a re enactment of some long lost Victorian athletics race, running for the 7 days (including nights) with only short breaks for sleep, food etc, does anyone else remember it? has there been any more races like it since? Rog
  4. Opposite the cemetery gates in Bulwell there used to be a small shop that sold flowers and Suttons ice cream, little bits of ice in it but it tasted great Rog
  5. 5 Park Drive tipped = 11d 5 Park Drive plain = 1s/1d and down the village shop in Clifton 3 Woodbine in a proper packet were 9d including 2 matches, the idea behind the 2 matches was you gave one ciggy to your mate and you had one at the same time = 1 match, later on there was 1 ciggy left and one match 11d = 4 1/2 pence 1s/1d = 6 pence 9d = 3 1/2 pence this would be about 1967 saw today a packet of 20 Marlboro which I used to smoke at £6 40p Rog

Often wondered that myself Rob, it's like a young victim of crime being called for example "a 13 year old boy" but if the boot was on the other foot so to speak the alleged criminal would be refered to as " a 13 year old youth" so depending on whether you committed a crime or was the victim of a crime would determine whether you were a youth or a boy Rog

Hi Eileen, Grand parents used to live on Wilford grove (above and the back of the little Co Op) we lived on Bathley street Arkwright street side of Bunbury street, when I were a little kid the legion always had a Christmas party and a trip to the Theater Royal to see the panto for all the kids and grandkids of the legion members Rog

I do remember the club at the top of Albert street, although I was only a kid I was allowed in on Saturday afternoons to play snooker on their full sized table with my dad and uncle, also used to go to the picture house at the top of the road/Highbury vale (now the Co Op) on alternate Saturdays to watch the Lone ranger etc, halcyon days Rog BTW what was the name and nature of that factory at the bottom of Albert street? (I used to sit on that wooden fence watching the steam trains go by)

First wife grew up on Lindfield road between Lindfield close and Firsby road, the back garden backed onto Broxtowe woods, at the bottom of the garden just before the woods father in law dug up the remains of an old Roman path/road, (it's been documented by the relevant groups) the path/road cuts across the garden and dissapears into the wood heading for Deepdene way Rog
  18. Yep definitely Co Op bakery overlooking the river, I remember some of the staff sitting out there to have their break in the 60's when I was fishing on the opposite bank near the Grantham canal rog

  20. Ayup Grendad, my grandparents lived next to the school on Albert street, if you looked over the school wall that was Highbury vale side of the school you would have overlooked their garden and chicken houses Rog

I can remember Mr Wagner who owned the butchers at the bottom of Hockley telling me he was interned at Castle Don during the first world war,(German ex pat) he used to tell me that one night the Zeppelins came over and dropped bombs on the place, he said the "bombs fell like bloody ping pong balls" always made me laugh that did Rog

You're quite right Ian, Ponderosa because of the size of the car park, the name Silverdale was the estate that the pub backs onto but we always knew it as the Wimpey estate after the company who built it although the folk who lived there who thought they were a bit too posh to live on an estate always said their address was South Wilford Notts Rog
