  1. My father was, likewise, in the Royal Navy from 1942 to 1946. He frequently spoke of the antics and adventures he experienced but, unlike some, he had a somewhat cushy time My father disliked authority and preferred to do his own thing so he volunteered for DEMS duties and spent most of his war in the tropics. Apart from Dengue fever and dysentery, he didn't fare too badly. Got paid by both the Royal and Merchant Navy plus 'bounty' ...not the chocolate bar! His letters home to his ration starved family made their mouths water at mention of all the tropical fruit, etc. A
  2. I remember Dalgliesh Brothers and Bobbers Mill Post Office. Walked along there in March this year. It has gone. Thinking back, I do recall the large house being demolished and feeling very annoyed about it. Even as a child I loved old buildings and hated seeing them destroyed.
  3. Wasn't the site redeveloped as Lodge Close in the late 70s? I may be thinking of an entirely different building but I recall an old house behind a wall which stood next to The Whitemoor Pub when I was a child. Perhaps CT has one of his excellent aerial photos of the area from the 30s.
  4. You've jogged my memory there, WW. I remember it too, as a small child, but had forgotten all about it until now.
  5. The Manning site on Gregory Boulevard is now occupied by a gym/swimming pool on part of the admin block and upper quad footprint. Djanogly Academy was built over the tennis courts and hockey field. Pickleface would turn puce but she probably haunts the gym. If I'd been more successful with my javelin that day in 1972, she'd have started her spectral career much earlier!
  6. Yes, it did, Beekay. I don't know when the changeover occurred. My older sister attended Peveril from 1961 to 1966. Both buildings now gone.
  7. Sometimes I think life for those left behind would be easier if you COULD take it with you!
  8. Ay up, our Ben. Nice to see you back. As for young Trogg.... get it done and dusted and get back on NS pronto as you will be missed.
  9. Correct CT. It's the entrance to the Admin Block. Head's office to the left, medical/viva voce examination room first window on the right, remaining windows on right are those of the school office. First storey windows are those of the needle work room and senior library Only the sixth form used this entrance. Below that, it was used only by latecomers who were locked out of the side entrances. The deputy head, Colthorpe, lurked behind the doors and would write down names of those who dared be tardy, along with the reason. The result was always detention. Just looking a
  10. His wife was a great exponent of equally silly hats. She wore two absolute corkers when giving out prizes at The Manning speech day at the Albert Hall in the early 70s. She made Carmen Miranda look under dressed!
  11. I tried a couple of those. One put me at 28 and the other at 39. Mentally, I'm not that old!
  12. Well, if we're talking about mentally, young Brew, I'm only 4. Life was just about perfect at 4, until I was sent to school!
  13. The problem is, we're all getting a bit long in the tooth...even young Trogg! Malfunctions can be expected but comparing notes often helps. To all who are in pain, awaiting ops or worried about their health, may your treatment go smoothly, painlessly and your worries be unfounded.
  14. Just a thought about Bonjela. If you are taking other medication, apparently you should ask the pharmacist whether it is safe to use Bonjela. A friend of mine was recently told it is contraindicated with medications such as anticoagulants. I don't like Bonjela, personally. I always found the pain caused by applying the stuff was excruciating and the effects extremely short lived.
  15. I sympathise, compo. I suffered from them regularly when I was younger. My dentist said they were a scourge for many women as they were linked to the menstrual cycle. I grew out of it but doubt it explains your predicament! Speedy recovery.
  16. Good news, SG. Us hypothyroids are on medication for the rest of our days. You're lucky!
  17. Not a pleasant subject but there is an article about Beechwood on the BBC news website this morning. I know there are a few former residents among our members. Ghastly goings on. Seems the place is still in existence but, thankfully, closed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-46320025
  18. I use the library editions of both Ancestry and Find My Past. Too mean to pay the subscriptions!! I did most of my basic family research before the internet existed when it was a case of traipsing round churches and to records offices to view original registers. It's very easy to see how transcription errors occur: some of the writing is virtually illegible. However, I prefer working from the primary sources because it somehow adds to the sense of history.
  19. I'm only interested in my own definitions!
  20. No. I have a ginger cat who does that for me! He's a puddyiatrist
  21. I have beautiful feet! They don't need 'doing' but, like a certain royal personage...and I don't mean Philmayfield... I also practise dentopedology.
  22. Now, I'd have expected you to turn up some Tibetan relatives, Katyjay!
  23. Sorry, the Tearoom is closed. Permanently! Not fit for purpose and neither was its pedagogue.
  24. A long shot, this one, but if Jennifer the partner of Paul Grant, Olive's nephew wants to contact me, I have some information....and some questions....about Olive. I know you mentioned you were looking into her background.
