  2. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all Members, Those were the days my friend, we thought that they would never end to quote a song. Getting to Pork Farms early to get your sausage rolls, sausage meat, and your Pork Pie. Getting to the bakers to collect your bread because if Christmas fell on a Thursday/Friday the bakers would not have any bread till the following Monday. Stocking up on your spuds, veg, fruit and nuts. Last of all down to cattle market/Marks an Spencer for you Turkey. The best thing though was, going to the pub Boxing Day with turkey and stuffi
  3. When we went to live in South Africa. Wages went from being paid weekly to monthly. We had two boys aged 3 and 5. We went out with £100 which was not a lot, and it soon went. by the 3rd week we did not have any money for food, so I took my husband's camera to the pawn shop (it seemed to be the in thing in SA) we got 5 rand which was abut £3 00 this had to last till hubby had his wages, the following month was the same we did not have any money left by the 3rd week, again visit to the pawn shop. This time I got 5 rand, well we brought a loaf of bread and big tin of baked beans. The following m

  5. I agree with you Compo I do think retirement age should have been brought down, after all life's for living not working till you drop. I can remember my mum had a choice about paying insurance stamps she could pay the full amount, or pay 6d of cause not earning much in those days she chose to pay 6d. but she was older than my dad by 2/3 years she could still not retire till my dad was 65 , so much for paying stamps. I think the best thing is when you as a women retire, and you have not paid in enough stamp money ( having time of to have children) they ask you if you would like to pay the
  6. Never smoked in my life but best thing to do is "Live and Let Live" your choice! Would be an interesting topic of how many of our members like to have a drink or two (pint or glass of wine) this is "quote" also a drug! It must cost the NHS more money than smoking as well as marriage breakups, violence, road accidents, and lots more problems. Again some of us do not cause any problems we just enjoy our self's
  7. I was born and bred in St Ann's and was amazed that Carlton Road was classed as St Ann's. I thought St Ann's finished at Bluebell Hill, before getting on to Carlton Rd, also when getting to the end of Alford St.
  8. Here's a Rhyme that my dad used to say to me, not sure if its a Nursery Rhyme or if my dad made it up. "Piggy on the Railway picking up stones" Chuff, chuff , chuff, "Down came an engine and broke piggy's bones" "Ah said Piggy that's not fair " "ahh said the engine" "I don't care" Now this must have been a good Rhyme because when I had my boys, when I used to say the Rhyme to them feedback was! " Again Mum" "tell it us again."
  9. Qztalgian you forgot the Cockle and Mussel man although he only came around in the evenings.
  10. Welcome West Bridgfordian look forward to your posts
  11. LIKE IT LIKE IT Compo But my father always said this quote Mary had a little lamb, its feet were as black as soot, and into Marys bread and jam, he puts his sooty foot. Amazing what you remember.
  12. Any member who lives/or use to come from Hucknall and reads the local Dispatch will know what I'm talking about. Any way here goes in the Dispatch the other week was an interesting article Why don't we teach "Nursery Rhymes to younger children? any more this was a question asked by a reader. I agree why do we not teach "Nursery Rhymes" any more. All they seem to teach now is "the wheels on the bus" Nursery Rhymes were a great way of getting children learning about times past example! Ring a Ring of Roses this rhyme was chanted after the black death as the ending was all fal
  13. Not sure where I should put this topic? I would just like to congratulate my daughter in law and her work friends for being nominated for raising money for haematology cancer patients day cases. The girls had a fun night at East Midlands Conference Centre at the nomination event. Once Again Congratulations NHS Haematology City Hospital and QMC.
  14. Accents? while living in South Africa 1970ish my eldest had to go to school now because of the situation in S/A my friend told me to register him at the convent school. One morning sister Jorden ask me into her office "tell me she said what's buus and buuter I tried in my best Nottingham accent to explain that this was our local accent, she tried her best to change the way my son spoke but we returned home 6 months later. North and South When the pits where working and we had miners, when they where at the bottom of the shaft , where they south? and when at the pit head where

  16. When my eldest son was about one and a half year old, I brought him for Christmas a train that you pulled along with bells on, on Christmas eve son went to bed quite late (I was hoping leaving him up he would go straight to sleep) well waited till 1 00 am and crept upstairs with his pillow case and presents only for the train bells to go off. Mum son called "Santa's on his way I've just heard his sleigh bells ring" .Son his now going on for 50 and believe it or not I've never told anyone this story till now.
  17. My other half had a Meccano set for boys which his dad brought from someone at his local on Christmas day, except that when my other half opened it their was not a single screw or bolt to be seen.
  18. I used to teach Hair and Beauty at a local college (I can hear some member's saying that's not education) well don't comment till you know what is involved. On the last days of term when all the hard work was done I would ask the students what kind of position would like to have after leaving, then I would cover all employment that was available for a job, I would cover interviews, wages, holidays, owning your own salon and much more. I know young people when leaving school do have people advising them, but how many of the people who advise have done that job? Where as I had
  19. "Please members read the topic listing this was meant to be a light hearted post, of good memories that we had when we were children I'm sorry if some of you had a bad time maybe we can start another topic on "The worst things that happened to me at Christmas as a child" Please, Please lets keep this Topic light hearted. Thanks
  20. I remember things that only happened at Christmas. At one time most of us had Chicken for Christmas dinner, then along came "Turkeys" my brother and myself used to go down cattle market with my dad, chose a Turkey (then the chap would kill it" we would take it home and hang it in the cellar to be plucked, this was always a week before Christmas. Christmas dinner was always a family occasion, one year dad brought the biggest turkey known to man and of cause it would not fit in mums oven, so it had to be cut in half. Fruit? though the year you never had much fruit but Christmas the fruit
  21. We were lucky in the 60s you could leave work on a Friday and start a new job on the following Monday, I don't think their was such emphasis on qualifications when leaving school, if you took your 11plus you could go on to grammar school then university, if all else failed their was the apprenticeship route. I do think now days school leavers have a lot to contend with, don't get me wrong I am not making excuses for them, the other day we were having a similar discussion about what subjects we covered at school. Cookery, needlework, drama. (I went as you see from subjects to a girls schoo
  22. Clothes have changed so much over the years I think it's known as fashion, my self I love to see men in suits or even shirts and a tie, when we go out Saturday night to HMW club I don't think any men their are wearing a shirt and tie, now days it seems to be casual dress no matter were you go. I think in the 40s (no i'm to young) only seen fashion in films but women used to have shoulder pads in there dress's and the dress's would just flow as they walked they never seemed to have a hair out of place and makeup was done to perfection. Having said that 60s fashion was great but its gone down hi
  23. As it's November just had to bring back this "Topic" Bonfire night and fireworks, Can remember little imps bangers 1d, Catharine wheels 3d, rockets that made you jump when the went sky wards 6d 1/-, roman candles 3d to 6d, the jumping jack 3d that followed you every were, and many more. We used to have 1d for the guy but they said that it was begging (it would take at least a week to make the guy and borrow the pram to sit it in) now we have Hallowe'en which the children enjoy but is this not also begging? Going back to why we had "Bonfire Night" maybe! just mayb
