  1. Not sure when Carnarvon House was built but in 1911 a Richard Wakefield lived there. His occupation was Glove Importer . He died in 1914 and his obit said he carried on his business in the "Great Market Place".
  2. This must have been the property when advertised for sale in 1945 when known as Carnarvon House . Porchester Rd then known as Thorneywood Rd . ( in a subsequent edition dated 13fh Dec 1945 the selling price was quoted as £1200 ) CARNARVON HOUSE," DAISY ROAD. OFF THORNEY WOOD ROAD MAPPERLEY. 3. Welcome, Am assuming the 1861 Census you mention shows the family near Harrogate ? George a mason born Notts and Mary born Ireland . On that Census as well as Liverpool born Catherine , is a William born in Ireland and Mary born Harrogate in 1860. With the info you have given can only see one Catherine Jackson born in Liverpool in Dec qtr 1855 . Mothers maiden name Glendenning. On Familysearch is a marriage in Londonderry , Ireland for a George Jackson to a Mary Jane Clendinning which could be the same people ? Name:
  4. I'd never heard of Static Water Tanks until a query on a local (to me) FB page mentioned playing in the "Static". These were built to provide the National Fire Service in WW2 with an emergency supply in case of enemy bombing . Was surprised to learn that in 1942 a Static Water Tank was built in the middle of Parliament St opposite the Elite ! This from the Nottm Guardian September 1942 : "Site Criticised IN MIDDLE OF NOTTINGHAM'S BUSIEST THOROUGHFARE. SOME criticism has been provoked by the choice a site in the middle of P
  5. I did A levels at Digby around that time Lizzie and was on the student union . I also used to DJ between the bands breaks on the Saturday night dances . I do remember there being a folk club but didn't realise it had a name . I remember a guy called Clive (Roberts?) having something to do with it . Bizarrely many years later , after we moved to West Cornwall he turned up in our shop one day as he had also moved to our area .
  6. Talking about grisly endings , this copied from a previous post on Griffin and Spalding about the discovery of 4 skeletons ( plus an extra skull !) during renovations in 1910 : ...."A lady asked about a story of a skeleton being found under some foundations of Griffin and Spalding in Edwardian times . Very little info available and the only reference I could find in the news archives was one from a Sheffield newspaper . Turns out there were four complete skeletons plus an extra skull ! At first it was thought the skeletons were the result of a cr
  7. This is a repeat of a previous request from Jan 2020 . Anne Swabey told you then that Sarah Ann Eyre's maiden name was Fish and that she was born c1885 in Cromer . Leonard Eyre born 1913 had a distinctive first name of Hosea . Having said all that , can't see a death in Nottingham in the 50s for a Sarah Ann Eyre (born about 1885).
  8. Notts TV does show up as Channel 667 on our old satellite box (not a Skybox) tuned to Astra 19.2 degrees but when selecting it , just says "no signal". Ironically the next "channel" to it is called "PTC Punjab" and can receive that as clear as a bell ! There are literally dozens of these Asian channels plus African and Chinese ones viewable but none of the nearer Continental Europe ones work.
  9. Can't get Notts TV in the S.West but if there were any old pics of Griffin and Spalding (that also appeared in the last few days on a certain F.B. Nott'm page) those came from this site and not credited .
  10. Showed this to my trombonist brother and he sent the following info : With regard to John Bentley's list of names, Derek Bush the drummer finished playing two or three years ago. His last gig was at the Bell Inn. He lives in Hoveringham. Pete Ryman is in a Retirement home. The others may have passed on. I too was in the Stapleford Big Band with Harold Kyte and Jack Rudd on trombone.
  11. In 1941 looks like Bridgart was at the Paul Pry pub , snippet of article here : Charles B Hunt 25 miner of Hardys Drive pleaded guilty at Nottingham Guildhall to-day to being drunk and disorderly on Boxing Day, and to assaulting Emily Corbett and Bridgart Hunt, his father, both of the Paul Pry public-house, Sneinton-road. . 27 December 1941 - Nottingham Evening
  12. Similar thing happened with us last week . Our son and us both normally used phones for video calls to each other via WhatsApp. For some reason he loaded WhatsApp onto his laptop and we had a similar compressed view like yours. Only went back to normal , at both ends , when we turned our phone from portrait view to landscape . ( not suggesting you turn your telly on its side !!)
  13. I think thats "Senior Service" fags advert behind the lady so not much help really . Shop's got an odd assortment of goods , theres even a programme for "Colwyn Bay Repertory Theatre"
  14. Thanks Mary , yes it would appear it was an allergic reaction but it upset his 10 year old daughter seeing her dad unable to speak properly and in a panicky state. Don't they use peroxide in these whitening toothpastes ? The one he used was called Oral B 3D Whitening Toothpaste
  15. Talking of medical symptoms my son shocked us this morning on his Skype call . Said he ended up last night in hospital after brushing his teeth ! They don't normally use it but his wife bought some Oral B Whitening toothpaste that he used before going to bed . Lying in bed his mouth started to tingle and his tongue began to swell up . So much so , panic set in and his wife rang paramedics . They advised he see a doctor but there would be a charge of 100s of euros if he went to hospital in an ambulance ! (he lives in Holland) so a neighbour took him . Luckily , w
  16. Our 2 main local papers in West Cornwall are owned by Reach too , though we are lucky , as ours are only weekly newspapers . Circulation 11,000 for the two combined , haven't bought one for years as they've gone the same way as the Post . They have the same dreadful website that continually bombards you with pop-ups . Click on a headline story and you find it was from last year ! Having said that I do have a tentative link to a features reporter who has published a couple of my blog stories locally . He does look for a sensational headline though and also syndicates these
  17. For ages I'd been wondering what happened to my school pal Ian , who was also best man at my wedding , getting on for 50 years ago. After getting married ,I lost touch with him , he was always a bit bonkers , foot loose and fancy free type . As teenagers the rest of us pottered around in old minis and Moggy 1000s ..... he had a red MGA convertible sports car ! His mum's house in Burton Joyce was a meet up place for us to tart up our cars . Occasionally I'd googled his name but nothing came up , then yesterday after another googling session a gravestone came up on on B
  18. Bought quite a bit of flat pack stuff from MFI near Midland Station . Some of it was bare chipboard that you then had to paint but was all we could afford at the time .
  19. I have a feeling you probably know this but may be useful for other researchers in the future . This is the Bishops Transcripts marriage details for Joseph Smithurst to Fanny Marshall in 1840 . Note the witness name "Lokes" that matches the family that Frances is living with in 1851 First name(s) Joseph Last name Smithhurst Sex Male Age 20 Birth year 1820 Denomination Anglican Residence Tyler Street Occupation Stocking Maker Marital status bachelor Marriage year 1840 Marriage date 20 Apr 1840 Spouse's first name Fanny Sp
  20. Re-reading the post heading noticed the Smithurst name . This one may be her , mothers maiden name Marshall. SMITHURST, FRANCES MARSHALL GRO Reference: 1845 S Quarter in NOTTINGHAM Volume 15 Page 564 In the 1851 Census she is living with her uncle Josh Lokes at St.Mary Street .
  21. Sorry to hear about Robert . A great singer and brings back memories of The Beachcomber Club where they played regularly .
  22. No relation but can see their marriage and them later living Yorkshire in 1901 and 1911 . See he was from St.Omer . Maybe she went with her parents working in the Calais lace industry and met him there ? Can't see a birth for Fanny in Nottingham around 1846 (her given birthdate) neither is she obvious on any earlier Census. There is a report of Oscar Cadet being beaten up by three thugs in Denman Street in 1884 . The thugs yelled "There's the Frenchman" and one gave him a kick in the face that broke Oscar's jaw .
  23. We had the AZ on Tuesday and last night at teatime I felt a bit "fluified' . Dropped to sleep whilst all the soaps were on . About 2 hours later woke up feeling fine ! Sleep must have done some good .
  24. Booking online you have to book the second jab too . Mines April 21st for second . We got the AZ one .
