  1. Going back a few posts ... Thank you Jill! Makes perfect sense now. I liked Listen with Mother as well, but I liked Women’s Hour after it even more. ‘Cos it meant I was off school!
  2. Ah! Gorritt! (The miracle that is Google!). It was called “Housewive’s Choice, and it was George Elrick who used to sing, “I’ll be with you all again tomorrow morning” to the tune of “In the Party Mood”. Back to sleep now!
  3. Funny that. I know the tune well, but don’t associate it with Woman’s Hour (when it was on in the afternoons.) I seem to remember they used “Dolly” by Faure. I have a vague recollection of The Party Mood being used on a morning request programme hosted by a comedian. He used to break in at the end to sing, “I’ll be with you all again tomorrow mor-ning” Amazing what things you remember. Or is that mis-remember!?
  4. Yes. Recently, going through a bit of emotional strife, I couldn’t sleep so got up and walked down to Gedling All Hallows church. Sat in the church grounds amongst the gravestones at about 1:30 am. Nothing but peace.
  5. I do like Tibetan Tonic Water though! And he WAS a dead ringer for the Dali Lama, wasn’t he!
  6. In a way I think it’s a pity that it’s mainly Tibetan Buddhism that is the “stream” that’s best known in the West. Due, of course, to the dispersion of Tibetan monks after the Chinese invasion. I find the Theravadan Buddhism of South East Asia more to my personal taste, but “all roads lead to Rome” don’t they. I guess the Thai monks are quite happy where they are!
  7. I think we’re kindred spirits, Jill! I find cemeteries very relaxing too, and they provide a reminder that life, indeed anything, is very transient. I also meditate, usually for 20 minutes! Can’t remember whether this is a throwback to my TM days or my later “studies”. Sorry, that sounds a bit grandiose!
  8. Sorry for the confusion, HSR! The railway runs left to right (9 o’clock to 2 o’clock if that helps). The north/south dotted lines are the path through the woods up to Greenhills Road. The remains of the ice house are still there. This was literally where ice for the use of the residents of Colwick Hall was stored, though why it was such a long way from the Hall I have yet to discover. The brickwork of the ice house is up a short steep path through trees and shrubs, off the main path. It’s (probably) domed roof is long gone. Thanks to my superlative memory (!!!!) I was able to go straight to it
  9. If you came from the race course side, across the railway line, the path led up to your left. Actually, I'm sure the set of steps is a relatively recent addition and the original path hugged the railings overlooking the railway line. The path now starts a couple of yards away from them and then goes back to the railings a bit higher up. This is the only map I can find that shows the crossing where I remember it.
  10. Yes, HSR. Taken from Greenwood Road. Actually, I think I probably passed the tree with the carvings as that is the path I took up from the railway. The sandstone cliff is still there, Beekay. I stood near it yesterday! I’ll go back and have a look for your cave! I think the cliff has some sort if geological interest which I read about on the Friends of Colwick Woods website some time ago. The site also has some personal reminiscences of those nissan huts you mentioned and might be of interest to you. The railway crossing was just a sprung gate onto the tracks. It was easily accessible, an
  11. In reply to Beekay in the Southwell Road thread, here’s the woods in all it’s glory, yesterday. Have got a few more to post later - of the path you probably used, BK.
  12. Hi. Have started a new thread for Colwick Woods as it seems there could be a fair bit of reminiscing! Will put a few pics on.
  13. Yes, Beekay, you can still walk in the woods. Went a few years back and it all seemed so overgrown now. Have been meaning to go back now that lockdown’s easing. If I do, I’ll take the camera and post some pics.
  14. My grandson, 2, spoke to his Nana on Facebook this morning. “I’ve been making shapes with Mummy this morning” ”Ooh, lovely. What shapes have you made?” ”Purple ones!”
  15. Agree absolutely, Brew. Some people are either being particularly thick in wanting someone to tell them what to do, or have had their bottoms wiped for them for so long that they’ve forgotten how to act for themselves. A product of the Nanny State. How can we formulate a definite, exact plan in a situation that is so fluid? You can bet your life that whatever plan the government came up with (in the face of such uncertainty) there would immediately be howls of protest, pointing fingers and crowds of opportunists just waiting to shout, “told you so”. I totally despair of this attitude that
  16. Yes they have food outlets all around the concourse, including a fish and chip shop! They also have bars selling “beer” at an extortionate price. Thank God for the Bunkers, Legend and Pretty Windows.
  17. That’s right HSR. It’s opposite the Motorpoint Arena on the corner. During the building of the market it was suggested that the pub be subject to a compulsory purchase order and demolished to make more room for the stallholders. Councillor Hooley of the Market Committee suggested instead that the pub be granted extended hours to serve the traders ... and the legend was born!!
  18. There is a date plaque on the buildings which reads 1926. I believe the bus depot was opened in 1929. At this time the area around the Fox and Grapes was all housing, demolished in the mid 1930s to make way for the market.
  19. Bleddy ‘ell, Col. We could be brothers! And I married a Whyman!
  20. Enjoy the rest of your day, Carni!
  21. I had it played at my Mum’s funeral, too, Phil. It was the choral version, “Lux Aeterna”. I love Nimrod, but I think this is the most beautiful piece of choral music I’ve ever heard.
  22. I had Classic Comics. “War of the Worlds”, “The Time Machine”, “Cyrano de Bergerac” and others, including, I’m sure, though it seems a very odd choice for kids, “The Oxbow Incident”. I loved them, and will still drive miles to see a production of Cyrano de Bergerac.
  23. I love those calls to Mo’s bar in the Simpsons. “Somebody on the line for Yuri Nator. Is there a Yuri Nator in here?”
  24. Do you think Shakespeare was a Buddhist, Jill? ... “there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. Hamlet, Act II (?)
