  1. I've just come across this old thread again and once more enjoyed reading all of the stories and anecdotes. The Grantham link has recently been revised and can now be found at www.tracksthroughgrantham.uk
  2. Not sure if anyone saw the photographs shown on East Midlands today the other evening. They were taken by a student on Christmas Day morning and with no people or cars about they made the city centre look like a ghost town. I can only assume that everyone was busy at home unwrapping presents or still in bed? The photographer was able to take one shot standing in the middle of the usually very busy road that passes the bottom end of Broad Marsh bus station (forgotten the name?) A little like Nottingham on Sundays in the 50's when most shops were usually closed on that
  3. I had to go over to Nottingham yesterday on business, but it was a very short trip. We caught a train from Newark at 10.45 and returned on the 13.30 total cost about £6 pound each. The city centre was very busy so we decided to walk up towards the Castle area ending up at the Trip to Jerusalem, a pub I last went in about 1968. I looked for the "cursed galleon" and eventually found it in one of the upstairs lounge rooms. Somehow it looked different inside its glass box. Is it the same one? Also the famous "pregnancy" chair looked different too, has this been replaced at so
  4. I've not heard too much lately about the pending takeover of the club by an American chap. Has anyone heard anything about this. We can tune in to East Midlands news here in Lincs, but nothing on that either?? What's going on....?
  5. The history of the ROF in the Meadows would make a great book (maybe someone has already done one. I've just read Bombs to Butterflies all about the depot at Ruddington. Interesting reading!
  6. I have a very vague memory of "tanks" going down Wilford Road near the Trolley Bus Terminus, either travelling to or from the gun factory....? Anyone else remember this?
  7. "Spies" by Michael Frayn. It's not actually about spies but vividly portrays the life and imagination of two boys in a quiet suburban cul-de-sac during WW2. Nostalgic stuff, very well written.
  8. Just started reading "Somewhere over the Toll Bridge" by Martin Eden Clarke. It's about his life living in and around Nottingham and is turning out to be an interesting read so far. The front cover has a very nostalgic painting of the old Wilford Toll Bridge with the GCR railway bridge in view in the distance. If you like this sort of thing is well recommended.
  9. On this subject of past times and a long gone world that we all accepted as commonplace. I've just read a lovely book called "Great Meadow"(An Evocation) by Dirk Bogarde (yes, the film star) Although not set in a city like Nottingham the pages describe some of those everyday saying and things from a different era that no history book could ever bring to life. It's about his early memories of living in a remote cottage in the Sussex Downs. A quote from a review of the books states:- "Bogarde writes with a love for his vanished world that is undisguised and unmistakable. He has brought back a l
  10. Thanks for those replies. I suppose 10 o'clock sounds more like what they said as 2 o'clock is a bit late for bed. Not heard of the night soil men!! Sounds even scarier!!
  11. When I was a lot younger than I am now visiting relatives would often come up to say goodnight after bedtime and upon leaving to go downstairs they used to say "go to sleep quickly before the 2 O'clock horses get you" or similar words to that effect. Anyone know the origins of this or what it actually means?
  12. Just read through this thread with sadness. R.I.P. Firbeck. I will miss his railway anecdotes.
  13. Unfortunately I've not been able to visit Nottingham for some years but have vague memory of the "Sevens"(?) pub moving to this area from somewhere near Weekday Cross? Is that right?
  14. Does anyone remember Byard's factory in the Lace Market?
  15. Yes, it was a good article seen through the eyes of a local lad whose house overlooked the GC through Wilford. A favourite haunt of mine during the same period.
  16. My first job (circa 1967) was with a precision engineering company near Clifton Bridge. Can anyone remember this company or perhaps worked there at some time? The also had an "association" on the same premises with a sister company called Vaughan Associates.
  17. I can still roll it off now. My mother made me learn it at the same time as my times tables!
  18. It's along time since I have had some time to browse through the forum but have just spent a while gradually getting used to the new format. I'm getting there and am sure that in a few weeks it will be as familiar to me as the old one. As good as a comfortable pair of slippers! A couple of years have passed by since I posted "First Ever Trip Alone" but a few months ago I decided to pick up the thread with the story line and move it forwards, so watch this space. If you ever travelled from Nottingham to Grantham yourself, maybe just to watch the trains go by you may be interested in a new websi
  19. I suppose I have many favourites but my "favourite" favourite is "Hotel California" by the Eagles. Second to that would be "Paperback Writer" by the Beatles.
  20. I do not have much time of late to visit this great Nottingham website but when I do I always find something to enjoy in the few minutes I usually have to hand. However, the time it now takes me to try and navigate around the confusing pages may deter me in the future. Sorry to be a little negative about what still is a great website, set up and managed by dedicated people for ordinary people like me... Keep up the good work, but it was far far better as it was before.
  21. I have the Lincoln Echo and the Newark Advertiser every Thursday. On occasion I pick up a copy of the Sleaford & Grantham local papers. They are both a good local read and apart from the usual supplement "padding" of houses & cars for sale, offer good value for money. It is possible to buy the Nottingham Post in Lincolnshire (I think it's also available as far away as Skegness?) but find it a poor version of the old Evening Post from days gone by.
  22. I remember someone who came to collect the pools coupon on a Friday evening (Littlewoods or Vernons I think?) We sometimes get some Swiss Company, think they are called Yodel?
  23. Thanks for the update, should be an interesting project. Your mention of the main fuse also reminded me that we used to carry a set of "spares2 as this was often a problem with them blowing for no apparent reason. I hope it works out and thanks for stirring my memory on something I had forgotten from my youth.
  24. I do not have any manuals or circuit diagrams etc, but I did buy one of these new from Carlsbro in the 70s and replaced it soon afterwards following various "problems" - one being related to crackling input sockets. It went back to the shop a few times and they tried to put the blame this on the microphones being used (Beyer) but the mics worked fine with other friends PAs and other makes in the shop.... On occasion (and totally unexpected) the reverb would give out a loud "crash" but this was a minor problem compared to it being unreliable on the road. What is surprising (and somehow comfo
