#88 I was into the 'Italian' style then - you know - short jackets and winkle pickers. That period followed my short lived drape and brothel creeper year. I ended up as a duffle coat and college scarf type before I (nearly) grew up.

How uncouth! A precisely aimed winkle picker was far more effective Reminds me of the pair of expensive, cool sued winkle picker shoes I once had. Didn't last long. Woke up one morning after a heavy night on the town, reached under the bed for the po, only to discover that I had used one of my prized winkle pickers during the night instead! Emptied temporary po and put it on top of the boiler to dry. Phew!! Eye watering reek!. The dried shoe ended up as hard as a pot out of the kiln and had a salty tide mark and texture.

When going out I wear a tweed jacket and trilby during the cooler weather, or a lightweight tailored suit or jacket and Panama in Summer. Oh! and proper shoes

Mrs PP drives an 8 y/o VW Touran. Like most small 7 seaters it is boring BUT it is brilliant in every other way. Spacious, economical and good to drive. A quality vehicle.

Crocs mean healthy feet. I wear them most of the time - not yellow ones though 6 months or more of the year = crocs with no socks when gardening or some other leisure times. I am chastised for wearing crocs and shorts while chainsawing, stone wall building and climbing trees - but hey! - at least I'm not wearing tracksuit and trainers!

Eric Biddulph known by Nottingham cyclists as 'Duke' had a fascinating book published in 2007. The first chapters cover his early life and recollections about Nottingham in the 40's to 60's. The book 'The First 70 Years' was published a year before he died in Huddersfield in 2008 (a week after we lunched together). Eric worked in various places in Nottingham in accounting and finally at the Midland bank at the top of Peveril St. Eric's dad was a bus driver with NCT 1932 - 1974. I am wearing a track suit at the moment while taking a break during a long rowing session. The worst tracksuit wearers, in my opinion are not the young chav's, but the middle aged, unfit, lazy scruffs. They have had time to sort out their self esteem issues, so no excuses. Just lazy, lazy, lazy! Pees me off.

A couple of generations ago the only people that wore track suits and trainers were footballers or athletes ..........! These days it has become a normal mode of dress. I OCCASIONALLY see someone that looks really good and cool in tracksuit and trainers. But the other 95%... oh dear!

I'm into the 10th day of the Concept2 January Challenge on the indoor rower. Averaging 20km a day. Wonder how a pedometer would work on the rowing machine at an average of 24spm? Would it record 48 spm? That would still be a tad slower than walking. Right - got to do another 10km before going to the pub

Bought wife a new car when I retired 11 years ago. It depreciated by £18k after 3 years. The most I've paid for a car since then is £3k. Current car £2.5k and taken me to France and back 5 times and a pleasure to drive. Can't see any reason for getting anything better. If a big bill looms at mot time I'll just buy another cheap car with a full mot. I had a £3k car for 8 years and only spent a few hundred on it; then it was nicked.2 years ago, otherwise I would still be driving it. .

Diet has far more effect on weight than exercise. Going to the gym will make little difference unless it is accompanied by cutting down on calories. Exercise is mainly for health and fitness. Oddly, some overweight looking people are quite healthy and fit due to exercise. And even more odd - some slim looking people carry hidden fat in their muscles and viscera and are very unfit. #86 The fishing pal I mentioned went to the Vulcan annual dinner 3 wks ago and spoke to the pilot who flew the 607 on the Falklands mission. Said that he was a very nice, unassuming chap. Pal is lending me the book when I see him on Monday. Thanks for the 'heads up' with this one. btw my pal earnt the nickname of 'Bomber' after telling us how he ran his tractor into a ditch when carrying bombs on a trailer. The tractor stopped suddenly and a bomb became unshipped and bounced past the stationary tractor! Won't tell you his name but it is similar to Harris.

My neighbour and fishing pal was one of the volunteer group that kept that Vulcan intact.
